Katrina is a great singer. One of the best these days. BUT apart from range, power, agility and resonance, what sets Regine apart from all the great singers here and in Asia (then and now) is that her velvety tone sounds EXPENSIVE and ENCHANTING to the ears. Talagang para kang nakikinig sa diwata, especially her LOW and SLOW notes.

I recall the Regine bashers back then that always makes this argument that Regine is not singing but screaming...it makes me laugh now that she is the golden standard even at age 50. Her longevity is due to her techinque and so on. I would have to say, Regine is still THE best singer in the Philippines today. But I also recognize that there are a lot of amazing talent today, and Katrina being one of them. And tone quality wise, she's the closest to regine's vocals, and she's still young and has a lot of room to grow. But if you close your eyes and listen to all the singers, regine is still untouchable, she may no longer have the highest range in the industry, but the emotions she put in a song, the journey she takes you when she sings, for some reason i don't get that same "goosebumps" from others, the "wow" moments are missing. Anyway...just a thought

Let's admit it, Katrina is more versatile and can reach higher notes but Regine's tone is expensive and her interpretation of every song is unmatched. Regine was just being Regine during her prime. Katrina is lucky coz she lives in a time where there a lot of access (social media) to different artists of whom she can emulate or even surpass.

As a Filipino who moved to the US in the early 70s, I grew up listening to many powerful American belters. I've only begun listening to singers from the P.I. for the last 2 years or so. I have no emotional investment in the older singers, except for Lea Salonga (due to Disney) and Freddy Aguilar. My personal preference is Kat. She has more of what I'm used to when I think of Motown and R&B. Regine is a legend, but not one I had grown up with. I look forward to many up and coming OPM singers becoming legends in their own rights. That is, if I live that long.

Any new biritera--Jona, Kat, Mori, and the rest of the wannabes--will always be compared to Regine as the yardstick against which they all will be measured. They will always be in her shadow. I don't know but I just feel like sometimes it doesn't help our new artists or divas, to be specific, to be often singing medleys or performing songs of female icons especially 'living legends' like our Songbird just to show that they can do the song or hit higher notes whatsoever because admit it those are epic performances that cannot be replaced. It has been done and we already heard it. Making small changes or bale won't be enough to surpass the greatness of these performances. Make your own mark coz you have the voice and the talent. Regine did. Notice that her most iconic performances were her own arrangement and sound. A lot of other icons also did. Establish your own sound and let your own voice and your own music be heard. Sing male versions or create versions of female songs that will not keep you under the shadows of the original singer. Be unique with your own gift. The longevity of Regine's career for me roots in her ability to create her own trademark and being able to reinvent herself. It's amazing how despite a lot of upcoming new biriteras and sound alikes she was able to sustain her place. Learn from that and not only from her techniques. Comparisons might help in the beginning but in the long run people will get tired and will look for something new to look forward to. No more 'the next' or successor of this and that. In the first place, you can never replace someone who's still existing.

I think we should stop comparing the two, Regine is the standard of singers in the Phils and that’s undeniable. What we can do as viewers who appreciate both artists is to help Kat with our constructive criticisms. Identify the opportunities (even better if) of Kat. She could hit the notes, it may not sound like RVA, but she’s nailing it. I think she could work more on strengthening her chest voice when hitting the climax. Katrina is a great singer. One of the best these days. BUT apart from range, power, agility and resonance, what sets Regine apart from all the great singers here and in Asia (then and now) is that her velvety tone sounds EXPENSIVE and ENCHANTING to the ears. Talagang para kang nakikinig sa diwata, especially her LOW and SLOW notes.

I recall the Regine bashers back then that always makes this argument that Regine is not singing but screaming...it makes me laugh now that she is the golden standard even at age 50. Her longevity is due to her techinque and so on. I would have to say, Regine is still THE best singer in the Philippines today. But I also recognize that there are a lot of amazing talent today, and Katrina being one of them. And tone quality wise, she's the closest to regine's vocals, and she's still young and has a lot of room to grow. But if you close your eyes and listen to all the singers, regine is still untouchable, she may no longer have the highest range in the industry, but the emotions she put in a song, the journey she takes you when she sings, for some reason i don't get that same "goosebumps" from others, the "wow" moments are missing. Anyway...just a thought

Let's admit it, Katrina is more versatile and can reach higher notes but Regine's tone is expensive and her interpretation of every song is unmatched. Regine was just being Regine during her prime. Katrina is lucky coz she lives in a time where there a lot of access (social media) to different artists of whom she can emulate or even surpass.

As a Filipino who moved to the US in the early 70s, I grew up listening to many powerful American belters. I've only begun listening to singers from the P.I. for the last 2 years or so. I have no emotional investment in the older singers, except for Lea Salonga (due to Disney) and Freddy Aguilar. My personal preference is Kat. She has more of what I'm used to when I think of Motown and R&B. Regine is a legend, but not one I had grown up with. I look forward to many up and coming OPM singers becoming legends in their own rights. That is, if I live that long.

I don't know but I just feel like sometimes it doesn't help our new artists or divas, to be specific, to be often singing medleys or performing songs of female icons especially 'living legends' like our Songbird just to show that they can do the song or hit higher notes whatsoever because admit it those are epic performances that cannot be replaced. It has been done and we already heard it. Making small changes or bale won't be enough to surpass the greatness of these performances. Make your own mark coz you have the voice and the talent. Regine did. Notice that her most iconic performances were her own arrangement and sound. A lot of other icons also did. Establish your own sound and let your own voice and your own music be heard. Sing male versions or create versions of female songs that will not keep you under the shadows of the original singer. Be unique with your own gift. The longevity of Regine's career for me roots in her ability to create her own trademark and being able to reinvent herself. It's amazing how despite a lot of upcoming new biriteras and sound alikes she was able to sustain her place. Learn from that and not only from her techniques. Comparisons might help in the beginning but in the long run people will get tired and will look for something new to look forward to. No more 'the next' or successor of this and that. In the first place, you can never replace someone who's still existing.

Regine has the total package. Katrina just sings, she can't tell stories and doesn't have the charisma like Regine has. In the end if she can't make a mark of herself, she'll just remain an immitation of Regine.
I think we should stop comparing the two, Regine is the standard of singers in the Phils and that’s undeniable. What we can do as viewers who appreciate both artists is to help Kat with our constructive criticisms. Identify the opportunities (even better if) of Kat. She could hit the notes, it may not sound like RVA, but she’s nailing it. I think she could work more on strengthening her chest voice when hitting the climax. That’s all I have to say ☺️
