Once again I'll say that Barry's teachings give me buyer's remorse on music school. The fact that Barry's teachings are not more mainstream is wild given how powerful they are. Many thanks, Chris.

I am improving Am6 diminished scale on D7. I am happy with that. I am more inclined to a different language then this.
For me this is a pre-Barry Harris lesson.(before I knew about Barry Harris)

Love the idea behind the series and combining the triad + pivot concepts in this video. I understand many individual ideas that you've shared in some of your videos, but bringing them together into a cohesive whole and making melodies with them is a whole other level. Thanks for making these!

This is starting to make sense! Making lines is "easy", but making them sound like jazz is not. Thank you!

Ok, excellent Chris! Nice vid with pleasing background good lighting, clear instrument. Particularly appreciated is the juxtaposition of two concepts in one lesson; always inspiring when you "stumble" onto a pretty phrase. Thanks!

This also about letting technique take to you sounds vs hearing it your head first and then playing it. I think both approaches go together.

@@thingsivelearnedfrombarryh2616 you're a great teacher, is there any particular reason why you would choose to work on D7? Like due to a tune you are working on with that chord or is it just a means of any chord to use to work on phrasing? Just curious, as we all get caught up in wanting to do everything in 12 keys!

Glad you're staying well during this weird time. Hoping Dr Harris is too.
One thing I noticed during this video is that you don't have reservations about calling something you came up with "pretty" or "beautiful". I feel like more players should feel free to talk like that. Too many people downplay what they're playing and it's like, to me, we ought to play what we like and like what we play! Of course we'll have off-days or we'll make mistakes but if we're honest about making mistakes we should be honest about playing well too. I feel like you're pretty good about that, and it is just one of those small things in addition to getting the wealth of knowledge that keeps me excited for future videos.

    • @thingsivelearnedfrombarryh2616
      @thingsivelearnedfrombarryh2616  4 года назад +21

I probably picked that up from Barry. I feel like when he describes something he plays as being pretty, he's not giving himself credit, rather he's describing something that already exists in the universe that he's happened to stumble upon. All this stuff is there for us. It's up to us to find it. He's given a lot of us the map.

    Hi Chris,
Blues player trying to learn more about jazz. Really getting a lot out of your lessons. Gonna require lots of time in the woodshed to digest to get Barry Harris’ ideas. So very happy I found your RUclips channel. Thank you for your time and knowledge.
Wondering how it is you have a Wildwood Guitars t-shirt on in the video. One of the best guitar shops in northern Colorado.
    Thanks

Yes Chris, just what I wanted (and needed)! I have one question though: Are you aiming for any specific notes to land on, or are you more kind of trying to surprise yourself and judge later if you like it or not?

Man, first of all thank you so much for this tons of informatiion, it’s priceless. I want to ask you about those little punctuation phrases that you made after the combinations of the triad and the pívot like you do in 7:34. I saw in books that there are some ways to finish the lines, but I don’t know if you are using that. And THANKS AGAIN

  • @JulianWegner

Hey chris. I am rewatching your lines videos. I think I could maybe clarify something that helps me practice right now. The concept of putting together small ideas like chord up and going down chromatically is a different idea than practicing those two starting on EVERY scale note. I was listening to Koko by Charlie Parker and realised he must have practised more or less exactly what you show in this video to achieve the speed. Maybe you could make a video about combining lines from one chord to the next in the future. Because I noticed I am practicing my lines only on one scale not on songs somehow. Thanks so much for making these videos. ✌🏻 peace

Thank you for this you've been a great teacher and continue to share great knowledge. I was wondering if you sing your lines before you play them? I always hear jazz pianists always making a humming noise, including barry, as if they are singing it in their head. I wonder if that is what it is and perhaps It leads to the help in creating even bigger lines.

  • @aristamanu

Excellent, as always. Thanks a lot.
I don't mean to take advantage of your generosity, but could you expand on "aligning" a phrase in the measure? In my view, playing the same notes over different beats of the measure produces very different sounds.

Hey Chris, is there preference on putting the half step on the ‘and’ of the beat or does it not matter where the half step approach to the triads fall on the beat? Thanks!
