Chappell Roan has faced a lot of criticism over the most minor of things, genuinely feel for her in that regard! But tysm! But of a different video to the witch hat ones, but I appreciate you sticking along! 😊
Thanks as usual! And it's such a sad story, it's made even worse given how people mocked and laughed at it. Feel like those kind of scenarios will only get worse and more frequent
This is one of the biggest reasons that becoming a celebrity just sounds terrifying to me. At some point of fame people just don't see you as a person anymore. I hate the comments that say "well that's part of it so better get used to it!" cause it just excuses people to not change their own vision about it and puts all of the blame on the victim... Thank you for this amazing video! Great job on the editing and I'm always happy and grateful that you add subtitles with these videos.
Two weeks ago, I watched Perfect Blue and found out that this movie is 27 years old. It's crazy that the obsession of fans shown in the movie is actually a reality many celebrities are facing today. What's also insane is that fans disrespect their “idols”, send them dead threads (!) when they do something they think of as bad (and no, I'm not talking about crimes here) and ignore their idol's personal space completely. I think that even waiting at an airport should not be allowed.
at 10:00 what's even more upsetting (specifically about how it occurred in Perfect Blue) is the fact that Mima didn't really seem interested in doing the NSFW work. And yet she still gets the worst of both worlds; she's treated like an object and exploited by the industry, which she has to grin and bear to "prove herself" and to "not be a bother"; and meanwhile, her stalker sees her as perverting the image he has of her, which makes him that much more violent towards her.
*Satoshi Kon* was really cooking & so was StrucciMovies with that Fake Friend's series that introduced the term *_"Parasocial relationships"_* to RUclips
seconding this! The two Fake Friends videos feel to me like genuinely seminal works on the matter, and the kind of thing that after you watch it can feel like required viewing for existing online, and related to that, I'm really grateful to see this video explore more facets of parasocial relationships.
uuuugh i feel a pit in my stomach whenever theres clips of people interrupting celebrities, demanding them to do or say stuff. and then the people have the gall to post it online afterwards? embarrassing
I watched perfect blue multiple times in my pre-teen years. My mom introduced me to the movie, and I love movies. Especially how they challenge social ideology, Idol Worship, and how they use color schemes.
Me and my mom watched this back at like 2022 or 2023. This aged well. Perfect Blue is beautiful in capturing the horror of obssession. And how it affects others. My mom who usally saw animation as just for kids made her feel horrified on what poor Mina went through. Now she's enjoying animation thanks to me. Thanks to Perfect Blue. But overall this movie aged well on how connection can become too toxic. Poor Mina and all women or anyone in the entertainment business going through this.
I agree parasocial relationships can be quite scary if the other party doesn't understand what it is or set healthy boundaries. I am fairly familar with male parasocial relationships. I would be interested in an exploration of female parasocial. All of my information on female parasocial relationships comes from anecdotal stories. "Females, on average, have much stronger parasocial relationships, they spend more money, get more obsessive, break more boundaries, more of them are stalkers, etc." I wonder if this is true or this goes along the lines of female parasocial relationships being in the spotlight for the first time more recently/negative news drawing more views and reality is different. I know guys are less likely to talk about this stuff because they are publicly shunned or it is seen as bragging if they do. Where Females are more likely to get support.
I watched perfect blue recently. Incredible movie, but the r*pe scenes made me want to throw up. especially when the actor playing the r*pist says "im so sorry". That shit broke me. the entertainment industry is awful.
Really well made video, as always. I find that on top of celebrity culture, parasocial relationships can also impact us in online interactions too; I try my best to maintain a distance to make sure I’m being polite far but not being overly friendly with people who aren’t my friends. Because friendship is a two-way street, and you need to remember that just because you’re mutuals on social media doesn’t mean you’re friends, and becoming friends is something you both agree to. I don’t mean to be a downer, or to sound negative towards online friendships, since I’ve had my own fulfilling ones over the years, I’ve just seen folks go too far in their entitlement to other people, some of whom I know personally, and it makes me sick.
Great video! It really is insane how well Perfect Blue has "aged" over the last 25 years. Something that I think it did but also didn't predict is the bizarre hater parasocial relationships brought on by social media that you mentioned. It's so weird that people will also obsess over the lives of people they don't like, so much so that they build entire youtube channels around it. Just very very werido stuff.
Yet another excellent video. As a person who could never understand the idea of being a fan of a person rather than their work (not to mention the whole sticky topic of declaring famous strangers one's role models and such) and whose equivalent of parasocial relationships starts and ends with respecting the work of my favourite creators and being happy when I can exchange a couple of words with them (via, say, comments rather than pestering them on the street or something), I'm always terrified by the kind of "fans" shown in this video. And I feel like we need a modern version of Perfect Blue - one that would be similarly highly regarded, but also... updated. I wonder why Satoshi Kon didn't want to comment on the movie's message - then again, it does speak for itself...
Yes, please more of these types of videos!✨🙏✨ I absolutely love the deep dives on Perfect Blue, & how relevant it is now more than ever (given the States’ ‘24 election results, & its ramifications). I can’t wait to see what else you’d bring to the table. Thank you so much. 😁
Thank you for this video. It caused me to really examine what social needs I get out of Twitch streams, and what kind of relationships I want to pursue with the people in chat, and the people streaming. It also inspired me to spend about 20 minutes unfollowing people on Twitch. So uh, thank you!
Oh man I forgot how eerie that movie was and what it covered. Even enough I'm 99% sure I own this movie, cant say when I last watched it. Looking at comments though.... man its older then I thought. But it highlights how careful and measured you have to be interacting with personalities via youtube/twitch/music/film&tv. Makes me wonder how bad I have been in the past getting the odd signature on a album and a photo, think I was ok but hindsight in all when you think on this topic.
Considering that Tyler The Creator made Noid is main single on his new record, it tells you a lot about how popular stars face this unfortunate para social reality.
I feel like after the pandemic or maybe even when social media was invented is when people really started getting too comfortable not respecting boundaries and being outright cruel to others. Because you can hide behind a screen and say whatever you want. Or record someone secretly and post it online without the persons consent. And this affects celebs a lot. I wish there was a way to make social media a more positive space where stuff like this doesn’t happe
I watch every video with Perfect Blue in it. This was a great video. First, I'm so glad I've never suffered a parasocial relationship of any kind, even in my formative years. And for one simple reason. I love the art, not the artist. I can love a song but dont care at all who made it. While its not the only way to have a healthy relationship with media, there is a minimum amount of distance a fan must maintain in order to not fall into the trap of obsession. To a certain extent, you should not care about the artist whose art you consume more than you would a stranger. I've always believed that when it comes to celebrities of any kind, its important to love their art and not the artist. 2Pac is considered one of the greates rappers of all time, a visionary. But he also got arrested several times for awful things he did before and after fame. Yes, he inspired many with his music, but his personal life, like anyone's, is rife with bad choices. He was talented, but still just a man. You simply cannot equate the beauty of a creation to the character of the creator. It is never accurate, no matter how much one thinks they know. Its unfortunate for both victims and perpetrators of parasocial relationships because everyone gets hurt in the end. Family, friends, and fans. Its so important now more than ever to draw the line somewhere with social media. But as technology connects us more, so too does loneliness and obsession increase. It may only get worse from here. Still, great work talking about this topic! Its such a fascinating, multi-layered topic that will get more relevant as AI improves.
it's amazing how perfect blue it's almost 3 decades old and has such a profound grasp of the dehumanization that comes with fame, including parasocial relationships. Fans toxic and entitled behaviour towards should be critized and adressed, as well as exploitation by famous people of that false sense of closeness to sell fraudulent products (a.k.a, influencers promoting virtual casinos, mr beast selling rotten food to unsupervised kids, etc), but we also have to take a step back and how, as always, capitalism plays a big role in enabling and promoting this behaviour. Idol culture specially suffers for this, where they sell not only the idea that the idol is cute and charming but that it's "available" so they keep coming back for that string of hope of romantic connection it is a heavy topic but i think it's important to understand there are not only entertainers and observers but also profiters that actively promote these behaviours in order to make cash
Downloaded Cozy Grove! Looks pretty nice ngl Great use of a classic as a lens on an important topic, I learned a ton from it. I hope you never have or have to experience such things too btw!
Parasocial relationships for especially fictional characters "simping" are at an all time high now and getting worse especially for prefect to physically attractive ones... No one cares and make it a norm even making shrines for such characters to usually K-pop artists... not caring hoe toxic the K-pop and community/life style is.
the likelihood of other crimes (particularly sex crimes) happening is higher betwen a male stalker and female victim but if the stalker and the stalked had a previous relationship this difference is lessened . the female/male victim usually experience the same fears of violation and reaction to being observed and having their lives invaded against their will . disregarding the 'biological' reasons the other comment mentioned stalking someone is still a concious effort on the part of the stalker and a choice the stalker makes . the reason why a male victim of crimes of this nature wouldn't be recognized as a victim is because the mockery of the victim keeps stalking/sexual assault crimes from being received as a major ethics violation, because misogynists justify these acts to themselves so they can keep doing them to women . so of course both misogynist men and women side with the perpetrator of stalking cause they think that violence is an inseperable part of sex and heterosexual relationships in this world and if a man is caught in the crossfire then he's left in the cold
Social media is a waste tbf at this point all these cringe content Not talking about video essay but ..u know parasocial cringe other ppl do racism prejudice to ppl of other identity and at same time I don't like when see some creators act harsh to consumers also some toxic arrogant ppl I saw some videos how they behave to their fans its the other way around as well

I'm not trying to insult you; I'm just expressing my feelings, thanks for responding and making videos I usually enjoy.
