Know your tracks, know your gear and FEEL the vibes the music is putting out. By then you will know exactly how to mix in the moment you're mixing. Sending my best wishes to fellow DJ's out there! Peace
Been making gigs with my friends for the last 5 months and although im more of an analog musician, this very entertaining, and i find your statement to be true, when you know your songs you just know how to mix them right
Pro tip: don't completely elimate the low of the song exiting, leave a tiny bit so that the vocal and or other elements don't sound extra weak and anemic
Yup. I find that setting the bass knob to around the 9 o’clock position tends to work out well…on pioneer mixers anyhow. Not sure where it lands on others.
Depends on the kind of music your mixing. A lot of commercial house music is mastered so that they use the entire frequency band while many underground songs are mastered keeping in mind that you will be mixing them. Also, depending on your mixer you need to make sure if your knobs are set on EQ or Isolating as there is a big difference. Finally, cutting out the lows while sweeping the song with a high-pass filter will allow you to add the incoming bassline much cleaner. (also mentioned in the video)
I wish people wouldn’t sware by mixing in key, I mix hard house and some tracks sound like they are made for each other when they are nowhere near the same key. If you always follow that then you’ll miss out on loads of great tracks that sound amazing together. Great video though mate 👏
Thank you! I agree 100%, I don’t even have mixed in key, although I have them labeled..I’m oldschool, look for elements and sounds that go together and keep the energy level in mind..your music is supposed to tell a story
you can go up a blind alley sometimes looking for the right key and end up with nowhere to go. it’s a great option but the right track should come before an in key one!

Jamie this is awesome, as are all your tutorials! A lot of DJs let their egos get in the way, but you keep it simple and the skills you teach actually make sense. Thank you, keep up the good work. I'm looking to do one of your DJ courses very soon :-)
A little tip: Don’t overlay/mix tracks from major to minor (or vise versa) if they contains chords and many notes. Only simple one note baselines works
This works even when you mix late and the original bass line is gone. just drop the bass out of the kick drum for one bar and slam in the new bass line on the new track.
Greetings from Texas and Thanks. I needed that. I'm a total beginner. I have a couple of techno mixes up on my yt channel, a dnb mix, a a jungle mix, a drum funk, one trance mix, and an industrial techno mix but I don't know many tricks. It's good to know you're out here looking out for us noobs. Your step by step demos made a lot more sense than other guys I'm subbed to that never really explain what they're doing. I've played with the reverb filter and flange here and there and even some back spin to let the next track come in but nothing as subtle yet technical as what you just demonstrated. Thanks again dude.
I'm old skool, don't think, feel. So I just experiment and create and that's how I learn best, with plenty of errors on the way, but it's exciting and fun and living on the edge. However, great tutorial, clear and well explained and although I struggled to follow the depth at times, others will easily read it. We all have our learning styles, it's great that we can share so many different ways to do things online...
@@1matzeplayer1 i had the prime 4 so i know.. ive used many dacs, controller and headphone amp in my life.. even denon mc3000 sounded way way better... this is not news.. wait for denon to release a new better SQ version and you will see.. not to mention that also keylock sync muffled the transient on the tracks
I am not professional Dj but have owned a console from past few years and I think am pretty good at it cuz have dj'd in my friend's parties. House music is most easiest Genre to mix in imo but most enjoyable one indeed.
I've never watched any DJ tutorials before. Just learned to do it myself and did it how I thought it should be done. And that's pretty much how I'm doing it intuitively without ever hearing about it anywhere. Just seems like the most logical way in most cases.
Its amazing how easy it is now. We where doing all this without screens or all the bells&whistles by ear on two Technics1210s year's ago and all while trying to hold the beats together. I guess thats why these days there are so many great older Djs. There skills include the fundamental basics and a trained ear.
I tested your steps and did something a bit different. 1. I didn't kill the low on the track that brought in. Just the track already playing with a filter sweep. I bring the filter in and still have the sound I want it.
Been wanting to dj tech house for ages I know so many songs in so many genres etc I can just mix it in my head daily but yet to get a deck lol only 25 y/o but my music vocabulary is vast this gonna inspire me to get one soon dunno why I haven’t when I got a £4k gaming pc lol I always get side tracked after work just playing games 😂
started DJing just some while ago and this was exacetly the technique I was looking for in Techno / House music. Any Suggestions from the audience for punchy Techno tracks that fit this mixing technique?
Even better idea... Loop the vocal phrase for 4 or even 2 bars so that it just says "keep shakin it". This gives you more time to finesse the drop/transition especially if you're newer or not familiar with this technique. Also, if you've got a filter button EQs can be ignored. Applying a HPF to the exiting track will remove all the lows and have the same effect but with an extra filter effect, it's only one button you have to worry about and it just sounds better imo. Then crank the reverb as you increase the filter until the new bassline comes in, then slowly fade out the old track. I use this technique all the time, it's easier, it's safer and it sounds great.
I use this exact technique, with some variations, constantly in my shows. It indeed gives impact and the hi pass filter creates more energy than just simply cutting the low a couple beats before the drop/bass swap. I also use this similarly to create a change point in techno songs that don't have a good break spot to swap, when I need to.
Love to know the software you edit your videos with? I do some small videos and have done your intermediate course would love to do more interactive video’s.
Big up to the London crew! Nice job guys breaking down this technique. My newest video is a 2 hours aggressive mixing on 3 decks using this brilliant technique.
