Know your tracks, know your gear and FEEL the vibes the music is putting out. By then you will know exactly how to mix in the moment you're mixing. Sending my best wishes to fellow DJ's out there! Peace
Been making gigs with my friends for the last 5 months and although im more of an analog musician, this very entertaining, and i find your statement to be true, when you know your songs you just know how to mix them right
Pro tip: don't completely elimate the low of the song exiting, leave a tiny bit so that the vocal and or other elements don't sound extra weak and anemic
Yup. I find that setting the bass knob to around the 9 o’clock position tends to work out well…on pioneer mixers anyhow. Not sure where it lands on others.
Depends on the kind of music your mixing. A lot of commercial house music is mastered so that they use the entire frequency band while many underground songs are mastered keeping in mind that you will be mixing them. Also, depending on your mixer you need to make sure if your knobs are set on EQ or Isolating as there is a big difference. Finally, cutting out the lows while sweeping the song with a high-pass filter will allow you to add the incoming bassline much cleaner. (also mentioned in the video)
I wish people wouldn’t sware by mixing in key, I mix hard house and some tracks sound like they are made for each other when they are nowhere near the same key. If you always follow that then you’ll miss out on loads of great tracks that sound amazing together. Great video though mate 👏
Thank you! I agree 100%, I don’t even have mixed in key, although I have them labeled..I’m oldschool, look for elements and sounds that go together and keep the energy level in mind..your music is supposed to tell a story
you can go up a blind alley sometimes looking for the right key and end up with nowhere to go. it’s a great option but the right track should come before an in key one!

This works even when you mix late and the original bass line is gone. just drop the bass out of the kick drum for one bar and slam in the new bass line on the new track.

Its amazing how easy it is now. We where doing all this without screens or all the bells&whistles by ear on two Technics1210s year's ago and all while trying to hold the beats together. I guess thats why these days there are so many great older Djs. There skills include the fundamental basics and a trained ear.
When will it just become you typing in some kind of code and the computer just moves the faders and everything else on its own? Cdj with no software and no beat matching, that’s who will be the new HOT dj’s one day. Back to the old school
Jamie this is awesome, as are all your tutorials! A lot of DJs let their egos get in the way, but you keep it simple and the skills you teach actually make sense. Thank you, keep up the good work. I'm looking to do one of your DJ courses very soon :-)
I tested your steps and did something a bit different. 1. I didn't kill the low on the track that brought in. Just the track already playing with a filter sweep. I bring the filter in and still have the sound I want it.
Even better idea... Loop the vocal phrase for 4 or even 2 bars so that it just says "keep shakin it". This gives you more time to finesse the drop/transition especially if you're newer or not familiar with this technique. Also, if you've got a filter button EQs can be ignored. Applying a HPF to the exiting track will remove all the lows and have the same effect but with an extra filter effect, it's only one button you have to worry about and it just sounds better imo. Then crank the reverb as you increase the filter until the new bassline comes in, then slowly fade out the old track. I use this technique all the time, it's easier, it's safer and it sounds great.
Using the high pass or low pass creates more energy rather than just cutting an eq, it also allows you a way to hide cutting some eq. It's a super useful technique.
Greetings from Texas and Thanks. I needed that. I'm a total beginner. what's the point of starting the hot cue on the song coming in the first time? if the fader is down we're not hearing anything until the second time you play the track coming in anyways. do you have quantize on so you're already locked in sync by the second time you hit the cue?

Hi, I have a question. I am using Serato Dj Pro and a simple numark party mix controller since I am just practicing. And I dont have the filter knob, is there any other way to do this techinque?
I use this exact technique, with some variations, constantly in my shows. It indeed gives impact and the hi pass filter creates more energy than just simply cutting the low a couple beats before the drop/bass swap. I also use this similarly to create a change point in techno songs that don't have a good break spot to swap, when I need to.
