    I turned up in hull 1991, with a kit bag full of everything I owned, i went to The Grafton to use the phone to get a place to spend the night. I left and came back, left and came back.then I heard a voice ask "are you locked out mate?" I said no I'm homeless." The geezer then picked up the phone and started loading 10p coins into it and phoned all the B&Bs and hotels but then turned and said, 'I've had no luck but if you come back at 8pm me and my girlfriend, will make sure you have somewhere to sleep tonight." That man was Paul Heaton, a truely great human being.

    Wonderful stuff. Can't be many people as successful who have stayed so true to themselves. The Housemartins were one of the reasons I went to Hull University (having grown up not far from where Paul found himself as a kid in Surrey, having also been a bit of a fish out of water - with family roots up north and a lonely allegiance to a northern football club - and also developing a shared obsession with Italian casual labels). By coincidence, I ended up living in his street in Hull, but was aware by then that he had a (probably healthy) disdain for students. Saw him at LA's club in Hull a fair bit, but never had the the bottle to approach him. Still don't think I would now. A genuine hero.

Some month before, Maggie Thatcher had visited Oslo, causing a riot that was widely reported in the UK-press. «Riots ruin Oslo visit» (The Daily Mail), «Few friends for Thatcher in Norway» (The Sunday Times) og «Pro-IRA riot in Oslo» (The Daily Telegraph). I remember Paul Heaton bringing up the incident during the concert and extending his warmest gratitude for the way Maggie was welcomed in Oslo, dedicating a song for the Iron "Lady": Drop down dead (26:15).

Jackie didnt directly admit she was working in a supermarket at the time (why not though?) but as I remember back in the early 90s thats exactly where she was discovered because she was singing as she was stacking shelves ffs 🤣 F ing best way to find her again and re-encounter her former encounter with Paul. Paul would "nationalise the fucking lot of them". So would I. The world and particularly this country needs a few more Paul Heatons. People who don't sell out their principles and forget their roots as soon as they get a bit of celebrity. Long may he continue. Stay angry, Paul, stay angry. It does make me happy when he bangs on about politics.

    • @edubmf
      @edubmf 2 года назад +2

      plus all the items he cited are "natural monopolies", so yes he's right, nationalise them!

      Bang on. Who hasn’t had hassle with energy companies etc. I was totally amazed to go down to England. You have privatised water! Eh, sorry, we pay our taxes for water and sewerage. It’s just so wrong.
      We also have free prescriptions how the fuck do people on minimum wage pay £9! Fucking mental.
      Don’t blame us if we have to leave. I love England. I’d be devastated if we had to split but the tories have really got you guys by the balls.
      People up here move into one room in winter because it’s too expensive to hear more than one room.
      Sure it’s not just Aberdeen but we need to do something about this.
      The privatisation of natural monopoly’s is insane and has to be rolled back into the state where the people who use it can own it.
      I really hope we can remain in the UK but we have basically a version of social democracy here. We are limited in what we can do but selling water?
      Great documentary, a great songwriter and performer. Sorry about the rant!

      @@peterbuchanan6927 Never apologise for speaking your mind and calling out social injustice. Too many people consider it Somebody Else's Problem. In many ways I envy Scotland. I'd love to see you remain with us as we have more in common than that which divides us. However I am absolutely and categorically behind the will of the people; if you decide to separate then we are still friendly neighbours. I will still regard Glasgow as a "home from home", and its people as outstanding. So far I have only been to Glasgow & Edinburgh but would love to visit many other towns and cities, including Aberdeen. I have every confidence that I would visit in friendship and leave socially richer than when I arrived.
