My cousin lived in Brooklyn and used to do the same thing and send the tapes to us in south Florida. We had all the hip hop before anybody else. Great times!
This is the single most important interview ever on Drink Champs. I'm 49 yrs old. Kool DJ Red Alert was everything to us when we were in elementary school in the 1980s. We used to tape his radio show on 98.7 FM and play all the hits at school the next day. Living history. Respect.

The best DJ I've ever seen to do old school jams straight out of the crates. DJ Red Alert his unique voice, his skills on the 1's and 2's is unmatched straight out of the crates. I bodyguarded him one time and he had about 5 crates of vinyl we had to bring to the stage..it was crazy.

One night at Joe’s Pub in the village, just broke up with a woman. Walk in Red alert was sitting in the back curbing women he wanted to be alone and sat next to him not knowing who he was, he turns to me and says look like you had your heart broken. I sat with him for hours just putting me on women schooling me god bless this legend and his wisdom.

It's good to see someone drop knowledge on the beginnings of Hip Hop and what he didn't mention was the song Good Times by CHIC was the song that sparked the flames for rappers to be at the forefront over the DJ'S. The DJ had to be on point with his mixing of the break beat to allow the rapper/rappers to get into their routine.
