- The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation transports a piece of steel beam from the World Trade Center South Tower to Gander, Newfoundland. The steel is being transported by a brigade of motorcyclist from both the United States and local communities. This is being done as a "thank you" to the town of Gander and surrounding communities for what they done on that tragic day 15 years ago.
Side note: Gander International Airport landed 38 civilian and 4 military aircraft with 6,600 passengers in total. Gander and surrounding towns shut down all schools and churches to provide shelter with some people even taking in families into their own homes.
I have known of Gander's generosity following 911 but only recently have found all these great videos and documentaries. As a retired US Air Force veteran I would like to say Thank You to the people of Newfoundland who supported the 'Plane People.' Your generosity will never be forgotten.
As an American and a 9/11 First Responder, thank you to the citizens of Gander for your help in our darkest hour! Bless you all!
Ordinary people capable of extraordinary things. A special thanks to the residents of Gander for representing us here in Canada. A shining light during a dark day filled with chaos and death. God bless Canada! I'm so glad to be living in such a kind and loving nation.
There is an excellent documentary here on RUclips about that day in Gander on 9/11. I think the title is "Operation yellow ribbon, Gander" Tom Brokaw or whatever his name is was the narrator, it's about 50 minutes long. It's a must see for all Americans to see how these amazing Canadians treated our American stranded passengers, they literally told them to go to any pharmacy and clothing store and take whatever you want, passengers wanted to pay but Canadian clerks wouldn't take it, they told them to take anything of the shelves and refill their prescriptions and don't worry about paying. I am a 40 year old man and I cried like a baby watching that documentary. Canadians are literally the nicest people on Earth.
You make me feel sane again. I am 80 years old and I also cried like a baby watching that documentary. My family always says I am a cold old retired military guy but none of them saw me watching that documentary. I echo everything you said in your post.
From a retired soldier I want to say thank you to the people of gander for taking care of all the passengers during this time.you treated them as your own.thank you
We also sent our Fighters to provide CAP over NYC (5 CF-18s provided top cover once it became apparent a attack happened, and the Canadian Navy deployed Air defence Ships to US waters incase of a follow on attack.) My good friend your top cover is here and very large!
Congratulations and a very big thank you to the citizens and communities of Gander for their expression of such love and compassion on this tragic day and on very short notice as well.
Howard Zinko congratulations?
The Words that best fit this story line come from Joe Cocker, with a little help from my friends! A big 143 to the City of Gander from all of us across the USA, you guys are forever in our hearts!
It's only fitting that this has become such a talked about history event now. It would have been much too painful to talk about it years ago. Such a horrific assault it was. Now we can celebrate some of the aftermath events such as the strength of the New York people, all Americans and Gander. The most important things is America's resilience and the love between our two countries. Canada loves you.
Proud to be a Newfoundlander

As you should be.
Thank you, Canada. And, thank you, Firefly.
thank you people of America for giving us this symbol to show pride and respect in our great country
damn I should be the prime ministers speach wrighter
Ganderites: "Oh, no, please don't try to repay us!"
Plane people and other assorted Americans/Canadians: * gives them a million dollar scholarship, a 9/11 artifact, and collabs on a Broadway musical about them *
"Ganderites" did not ask for compensation at all. It was freely given by their own choice, out of gratitude.
Cynic.
@@susieq9801 Did I not make that clear in my comment?
AtarahDerek - Apparently not.
@@susieq9801 YOU are the one who misread my comment and inferred that Gander asked for compensation. My comment was about the fact that people piled on the compensation and repayment despite Gander's insistence that they not.
AtarahDerek - My apologies. :(
I thought the implication was that they accepted all of these gifts as somehow deserved but which they did actually accept with gratitude but never solicited. All the best.
Eternally thank you Gander
Windy on that rock eh? Damp too I'll bet! Glad ya came!
Gander isn't too bad. It's pretty flat and inland. The east coast (Avalon) is where the weather really sucks lol. Trust me :p
I'm curious about all the motorcyclists. What have they got to do with this generous offering? Is Tunnel to Tower Foundation a motorcycle club?
All i heard was sirens, and saw loads of bikes, i did not see any iron beam from the world trade center
It's a short piece of a steel beam probably 10ft tall. It's inside the American flag painted trailer towed by the black pick-up truck. Not that the size really matters, it's the symbolism to thank Newfoundlanders of what they did.
At 1:57 you can see me on that kinda red bike with the red helmet on in the front
Amen, GN.

How nice of them to give the Canadians a piece from that fireworks show.
