      Same, new mama of 4 in Houston so worried about Summer time ! Thanks for all this great info. I subbed and I'm binge watching/ listening. I'd love your opinion on Garden Lime for mites and smells! Also are you composting there poop? I have a garden I'd like to utilize it just not sure how yet. Your flock is beautiful and I love your set up I have a little Sentinal coup I got from TSC it's got zero ventilation. Cutting holes at the top and adding hardware cloth today so the poor babies can breathe. Have a great Sunday and i look forward to your vid on this bird flu and vaccines ❤

      Hi! Good for you on improving the little coop. Garden lime can be great, I know people who use it but I never have. I do have a video on composting, I don’t do it anymore because I couldn’t keep up with it. You do have to compost their poop for at least six months before it’s usable as it has all the acidic urates in it.

    Hey girl! I swear you have a video for just about every problem or question that has come across my time keeping chickens. So my father built me a pretty solid coop, he copied the over ez brand but made it taller, no insulation which is fine. We decided to do an open air roof for maximum airflow. However the wood he chose for the ceiling was OSB, it's rough and ridge and prone to mold in the elements. It gets a lot of condensation in the morning, even with my chickens moved to My second coop while I paint. Would you suggest using this sealer for the roof since it gets alot of contact with the outside air. Or do you think extra layers of high gloss exterior paint will do the trick. How have you been able to keep up with preventing mold growth in these coops. I'm in Washington state by the way

      Hey! Hmmm that’s a good question. I would think sealing it when it’s dry would be the best option to keep it safe.

    I wish I had found this video two weeks ago. We used a Valspar sealant that said "clear"....but it turned the white trim on my brand-new coop yellow. I'm not -super- picky, and I'll live with it, but it would have been nice not to be surprised by that. I did find that if I used a rag and rubbed it on like stain, the yellowing was less noticeable.

      Oh no I’m sorry. My secondary coop is all marked up now but that’s my own fault, I was using a dirty brush because I was in a hurry.

      The Helmsman will yellow too. Just FYI. Never used that milky stuff she had, but it looks like my water-based polycrylic

    What kind of sand do you use inside your coop? Also do you still use grubbly feed? I think I’m going to start my chicks on it when I get them and my layer hens too

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  Год назад +1

      Hi! For sand - concrete mixing sand or a rough sand is best. Bonus it’s cheaper too! Don’t freak out when your chickens peck at it. It’s normal as they’re finding grit - yes chickens eat small rocks. I like Grubbly Farms a LOT and would use it full time if I could afford it. I did a video on this recently, I do have to supplement with other brands, just due to cost, but if the price were the same, I would definitely use them forever! ✌🏻❤️🐓

    Love your videos! I have a question I have rethought so much my brain hurts! I have a an 8x8 new coop and have worried about mites or lice hiding in cracks, and not getting rid of these horrible things. My neighbor lets her hug flock over at my house, even though I have talked to her so much, she also see's me outside shoeing them away, and she still won't do anything. That's not my question. So she has told me her large amount of chickens, turkey's have lice. She said she knows she has to do something about it. She knows what do. So I am terrified my new chickens, they will be going out in about two 2-3 weeks to their coop. I am not sure what to paint the inside of coop that is safe in the cracks and crannies??? Do the products you used safe, and keep the bugs out?? Are those examples waterproof or ??? There are different ones of them at the store.
    Thank you so much! I am totally overwhelmed.

      Hi! Sure I can help. I’ll put a few quick things here but you can also email me so we can talk more. theMama@realsimplemama.com
      I would deep clean the coop (I have videos on that) and then use poultry dust in all those little nooks and crannies. Peppermint essential oil is also fantastic, or lots of fresh or dried aromatic herbs are bug deterrents. And all of these are bird safe! You can add all these things as often as you want, and poultry dust can even go directly on your birds or in a dust bath too.
      And also… yeah you need to get those other birds off your property. That’s unsanitary and her laziness is not your problem. 🙄 I’m sorry! theMama@realsimplemama.com

    Do u have any advice on why my hens would all of a sudden stop sleeping in their coop? Ive read online maybe a predator scare or mites but may coop is clean and no mites that I have found? They were free range for a while then I fenced them in since I couldn't trust them. They kept expanding their area towards the neighbors. So I fenced them in. Now im struggling to get them to use their coop.

      Hi! This has been happening to me recently with a few hens who I’ve had for a while. So they’re not new or anything. My guess in my case is it’s just so hot, so I’ve been working to keep the coop as cool as possible.

      You know, I’m back to add that it might be a small predator. I’m not thinking raccoon, I’m thinking more like a snake in a nesting box. Maybe look under bedding and see if something small like a mouse or snake can get in and hide?

      @kingbee4474 hi! Yes they should be but use them during the day when the animals are out. And always check the labels to be sure. ✌🏻❤️🐓
