In my part of the world, (Dana Point, CA), conditions like that would result in cancellation of the event! This is pretty hard core paddling! It looks like a ton of fun, but I think it is still out of my league.
Probably more Kai Wa'a canoes in Maui. Some Pueo riders switched to the Ares Pro. Best to try different canoes for your local conditions and see which suits your style better. Here in Maui the Kai Wa'a canoes seam to be more popular.
