Proof locomotives can be diecast and still be affordable.
If they keep this up Hornby and Bachmann are in trouble.

I think Hornby, along with their various brands; Corgi, Airfix and Scalextric, are already in trouble. Just over a year ago they appointed none other than Lyndon Davies, the owner of Oxford Diecast/Rail, as their CEO, most likely as his company has been going from strength to strength whereas Hornby Hobbies has been in decline for some time. This most likely being a desperate attempt to get the company back in the game. As far as I know however the two companies are still completely independent of each other.

      @Steamer96 5 лет назад +3

@@mitchellhogg4627 Yeah the reason why I think hornby is trash is because I bought a frame for a Gresley teak and it arrived in an envelope smashed and broken. Then when I ordered another one one of the tool boxes fell off in the box.

WOW!!!! There is not one thing I do not like about this engine!!!! You got a REAL good deal on that engine, and I can't find anything wrong with it either. I LOVE the elegant gray paint livery, the crisp details, the pipe work, the red connecting rods, the painted boiler and cab details, the fact that the 2 rear trailing wheel flaw from the Adam's Radial 4-4-2 Tank engine has been fixed on this engine, the smooth running, and it's powerful!!!
MY God, I'm blown away, and this is just the first engine for 2019 which is not good because this engine is gonna be VERY tough to beat!!!!
You're gonna need to find one heck of an engine to beat this. I can't stop admiring this beautiful little engine. I'll most definitely get one when I can.
I can't wait to see more of what's to come. :) Beautiful engine! :)

Hi Sam, thank you for your response to my comment. One point I failed to mention was that I had placed an order for an Oxford N7 and cancelled it months later in favour of a different machine. Following your glowing report on the N7, I feel I now need to reinstate the order super quick to ensure I get delivery of the locomotive. I thank you for your excellent work that enables a decision on what to, and what not to buy.

The detail on this beauty is phenomenal and the price is too good to ignore; even I am struggling with the temptation to buy one, even though I am still waiting for my steam railmotor to appear in a few months' time. Excellent video as always. Keep up the good work.

An incredible way to start with this year's reviews, Sam. The N7 class was a fantastic model, its something to celebrate how good it is. They really put effort on the quality with many parts of the body being metal, making it very heavy. Its also a very good performer, 8 coaches isn't easy for many locos, and doesn't sees to struggle. The attention of detail is great too, the Worl War II White livery is very attrative looking, and its amazing they managed to make a good detailed cab, despite not being very visible one. And obviously, the value is suprisingly good, being a model that could be more expensive. This proves that Oxford really takes care for their costumers, being able to sell their models for a great price, wich is very afortable for many people. Its a great model to start, similar to the P class from last year and its ranking will be very difficult to pass, but time will tell. Anyways, hope you're having a nice day, and I'll see you in the next video.

Amazing review Sam! This is going to be a tough loco to beat this year I reckon. I was thinking about models I might want to save up for a purchase this year and I think this one has been added to the list of ones I am considering immediately. It amazes me how great of a loco this is for such a reasonable price. If Oxford Rail continue to make models this good, I think the Hornby and Bachmann will have no other choice than to follow suit and join in on making their locos with diecast and an affordable price tag. A very good thing for the hobby. Keep up the great work Sam!

I still need to get one of these - They're gorgeous things and the only reason I haven't yet is the fact that, currently, I'm making use of several decent offers on SR Locos (which, given about 90% of my stock is Stock is Southern and the rest is LT is sort of logical). Once I've got myself an E4 I'll be getting an N7 (LNER Black to match my modelling period).
As for haulage, eight wouldn't be a big deal for a real one of these (I think they were utilised on trains formed from pairs of Quint-Art sets, that is five-car sets that were articulated, and certainly on pairs of Quad-Art sets, which would be eight total) so it's good that the model matches the prototype in that regard.
If I had a better reason to get one (I.E. If I didn't model almost exclusively Southern prototypes) I'd already have one. As it stands I'm planning a London-area layout to justify one!
Amazing in all areas - Just want Oxford to do a few ex-LBSCR and ex-SECR locos and they'll have my money.
What mystifies me about Oxford vs. Hornby is the fact that they share C.E.Os and clearly collaborate (Hornby's 1:76 scale road vehicles are generally made by Oxford, not Corgi and Oxford's. Buildings have been incorporated into Hornby's range) so how on earth can such a difference in price and quality be justified?

That’s seriously impressive. I’ve an LNER one on pre-order and I’m looking forward to it even more now. I’ve seen a video elsewhere of one hauling 16 coaches on the level having started on a 3rd radius curve.
There does look to be a visible join on the boiler, where the motor cradle is part of the lower boiler. I think it shows up more due to the livery, I expect it’s less obvious in black. That Westinghouse cylinder looks like a nice moulding mind.

As an LNER (GE) man I’ve been very excited about this product. Seeing the initial video and now this review of the loco it is going to be welcomed with open arms by LNER (GE) modelers. So you know Sam, The loco is very accurate to the prototype as a belpaire fireboxed version of the N7 some modelers have been a bit suspicious about the chimney, dome, blower pipe (which was fitted to a certain series of the N7) and the fitting of vacuum pipes to a GER loco (which tended to run on air only) But if I am honest for £87 pounds that’s simply amazing and the LNER & BR versions will also be very very nice

Received my early BR version this week. Straight out of the box it performed faultlessly on the club layout, getting many positive comments from other members. My only gripes are: the lack of internal valve gear as you also remarked, the cheapskate application of the smokebox number direct to the smokebox door and a complaint that applies to all enclosed cab models, make the cab roof removable please. Fitting crew, weathering and simply admiring the wonderful detail now commonplace in 4mm scale cabs would all be so much simpler.
These locos are the first ones I was familiar with as a child living in North London. When they were facing withdrawal in the early 60's, the crews used to invite us schoolboys to travel in the cab from Enfield Town ("Just keep your heads down as we pass the loco depot office, boys") and even operate the reversing wheel and regulator on occasions!

    • @SamsTrains

@@SamsTrains I spent this afternoon weathering my N7, it looks much better now but haven't managed to squeeze a crew into the cab yet. As a result of minutely scrutinising this loco I found another issue that I'll need to work on; i.e. the front coupling sticks out far too much. A Bachmann LBSC E4 tank I was weathering as well has its front coupling way shorter.

It's been a massive complaint of mine how expensive new locos are (Hence I've been repairing used models and buying those more recently)
Oxford, while their previous loco attempts haven't been great, really put a lot of thought into this little loco and I'm glad to see them doing so well. Hopefully this competition will get some more budget models on the market. The Great Eastern section of the LNER had air brakes. If I recall, the entire class was intact until the electrification to Chingford and Enfield was complete, around 1960, which took away their livelihood. The GER had considered electrification in 1903 and built a freak locomotive called the Decapod to test the steam alternative. In the end, it settled for keeping steam until the LNER completed the Shenfield electrification in 1949. The small driving wheels gave them sparky acceleration.

I checked on the Hattons Website and it is £98 which is 186.86 AUD which is a great quality model because most models made my Australian modellers are 200+

@@SamsTrains Absolutely right. Can't believe the price on this - currently only about $AU180 which is an unbelievable bargain. You couldn't get a Hornby tender engine in Australia for anything less than $AU210 new

Hey Sam I have two very cool ideas for what you can do, the first one is to either do a review on another N7 in the LNER Black, or one with a DCC Chip in it. The second idea that I have it to have a competition between all of your 0-6-2’s to see which one is the best overall.

Hey Sam, can you check out the video that I did when I reviewed two of my models to see what you think?
