As someone who has been vehicle based camping and exploring “now called overlanding” for over 60 years I couldn’t agree more. Most of today’s “needs” are simply because people have become unwilling to just get back to nature and be simple to really enjoy the outdoors. They seem to want to bring their apartment or home with them. Save your money, go with menu and sleeping planned for simplicity, remember the proper coat, and enjoy nature! Whether you have an old beat up Corolla or a fancy 4x4 just plan your trip accordingly. There are tens of thousands of miles of forest roads that don’t require a special vehicle. Go in small groups and share some of the common things to save space and build relationships! Thanks much for being direct with this. Sure some convenience is nice but getting out there is what’s really important.

I am over 50 and grew up camping (fishing, hunting) with my Dad, sleeping in the back of his 78 Cherokee, I did not know we were overlanding, keep it simple and remember why you are out there.

Well said! Something that I tell my viewers a lot is 1) it's taken me 3 years to build my vehicle to where it is, 2) I have gone through different "needs" but also a lot more "wants" and 3) as a content creator, most of the items we get are free or in exchange for content which makes it more affordable vs the average consumer. Transparency is king and you really earn respect with your viewers.

One of the reasons I watch your channel, Brad’s and others you listed is because you all say it multiple times, this works for me here is why, and it may not work for you. That to me is as honest as you can be. One reason why I took your recommendation and got a SetPower fridge/freezer. I have not had any regrets due to your review, I took the chance. Keep being you, it’s why we are here.

We appreciate your honesty. I'm brand new to this overland concept. Since space is a premium in my 2 dr. Jl I am currently looking at rack systems. At 63 I don't really want to sleep on the ground.
I'm not rich ,by no stretch of the imagination...lol
And I do have some camping gear. I know that quality is better than buying over and over.

I'm pushing 70 and I'm not an overlander, just camping and fishing. But I don't care for ground sleeping much these days. As an avid Jeeper, space is typically at a premium. However, lately I have switched to using a good insta-cot I got from LL Bean, with a good Thermarest self inflatable pad on top. Does'nt take up too much room and I sleep waaaaay better. Tent or out in the open, doesn't matter to me weather permitting. Not too expensive and works. Give it a try if you haven't already.

I think why a lot of people think RUclipsrs are making those type of videos is a few things. One, sponsorships. Fridges and stoves and rooftop tents and all this other stuff. Two, overbuilt rigs. For the type of overlanding that 97% of people will do, a Gladiator Sport with a leveling kit and some good 33s, 34s or 35s will get you there. You don’t need a rubicon on a 3” lift and 37s and a regear and a $30,000 off road camper. Any 4wd with a 2 speed transfer case, mild lift and a good set of all terrains will get you there.

Thank you for the video. Got tired of our motorhome and sold it this last summer. Our son has a power wagon and has it outfitted pretty good for camping/overlanding. He wanted me to get something so we can go places together. Several months ago I got a Jeep Gladiator. Making a list of everything I want to purchase and install. My son said, "Dad you don't need all the stuff." I had him give me a list of what he thinks the minimum is. He said half the stuff I have on my list I am going to change my mind. Lets just start going out. His list and your video are in alignment. Again, thanks.

When me and my 5 yr old son go Overlanding in our Sequoia, we have one or two totes (organized), two lifetime coolers (one for food and one for drinks) and a queen size blow up mattress that we fold the second row up and fits perfect. We care more about getting there and being in nature, verses doing it in style. It's about making memories and teaching him life lessons. Hopefully he'll do the same with his son.

Great video, Matt! I understand your thoughts on how some influencers say "You must have, . . . " I think it takes some discernment to evaluate exactly what each overlander "needs". Safety is important and should be at the top of any list of things that make sense if a person is to get away from the general population. Having an emergency means of communication and a First Aid kit makes sense. That is one of only a few things that could be qualified as a need. Everything else is a "want". I have a Gazelle tent that is decidedly glamping. I have it because I like my wife camping with me. The nice cot is another item. We don't need a $230 orange overlanding stove (that would go great with my Mojave trim Gladiator) when my Coleman works just as well. The list goes on. The idea is to get out into a place with a lot more trees and fresh air than people. Whatever means are available are the means that can be used to that end. Thank you, again.

Before my 2001 Suburban was totaled by a person who thought a text was more important than driving. All I had was a bed on a frame, a cheap fridge, and a rubbermaid 3 drawer cabinet. It had a 2 inch lift, with 33's, and a 6 foot canopy. It was used to go camping, and simple off roading/ overlanding. I have watched you as well as the rest of the tubers, and yes there were a few that talked about a certain product here, or there. I discovered early on that i don't need a lot of what you all have, and I did just fine.

When Ford offered its first vehicle, people loaded it with camping gear and drove to a camping area several states away. At the end of the day, they would pull over and set up camp. The next morning they would break canp and continue driving.
That is overlanding. It doesn't matter how fancy or basic the gear is. And it doesn't matter if you are a gear junkie or want to be a minimalist. We don't have to rock crawl to the top of a mountain. A casual drive down a forest service road to a lake shore camp is just as good of a trip

Maybe over looked one little necessity, a place to do #2s ,(& #1s, especially if ladies travel with you)...Of course, if you at a camp ground there are usually facilities. But deepened on now remote one is, what one would need , a stick or shovel to make a hole to squat over, and a bit of bog roll (aka T.P.).. [don't forget to fill the hole over]. A step up is a 5 gallon bucket and trash bags to line it. and so on and so on, up to composter toilets or a full flusher with holding tanks ... basic to bougie... the basics, food, water, shelter, transportation, and a way to do #2s...As always great video Matt...

So I 100% agree with everything you said and I've never heard any of the most well-known overland channels say you need any of this stuff. However, what I do find interesting (and can seem disingenuous to some), is that they all seem to get the same "overland influencer package" sent out to them at the same time and they all put out videos around the exact same time saying how much they love this new product. When everyone is all talking about the same DVOS light or Iceco fridge at exactly the same time, it seems fake, and marketer-created hype. I know you addressed this a bit. But when you step back and zoom out from just your channel, the picture changes a bit.

A lot of Overlanding thumbnails and titles walk a fine line of click bait to begin with. YT is one resource and I personally believe what my local peer groups say over YT due to the specific nature of where I am at and what I am doing. That can overlap of course if a RUclipsr lives in my area of the country.

You should tag your “Walmart overland video!”

I might add sat comms if going deep off grid. Most iPhones can do it now, or a Zoleo or Spot can be affordable. Would be the only thing I would add, as I have personally seen people get rescued from bad wrecks offroad or in situations where someone gets hurt way away.

I dont have heaters and a/c because I don't have room for everything and find that less is more, with an off-road teardrop. I have a SetPower fridge and power source and a rechargeable fan for the dog. I could live with less kitchen stuff. But I found long ago that other people's must haves are not my must haves. With less stuff, I find it easier. I watch people unloading scads of stuff to find what they really need.

Some folks have "G.A.S" (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). I know folks who do the same with photography gear. Since you guys are blessed to have a successful channel one way to clear up some space is you could do some type of giveaway for the holidays. Clears up space for you and helps others out . my .02 🙂

Overlanding, you don't really need much, if you have a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, Ford Bronco, and other SUVs type , because you can sleep in the back. You can get an iceless coolers that uses the 12 volt outlet or cigerette lighter port. Camping stoves and a skillet or a 3qt sauce pan. Or chose your own items to start out with

What you want is all the goodies and $100k. What you need is the gumption to get out there with a vehicle. I’ve seen a couple out in a model A on a forest road having an absolute ball!!!!

I started in an 85 CJ7 what I needed fit in a backpack, because that was all the space you had! I’m still a minimalist when car camping. Although I do have a RTT and a couple of convenience items. I’m also in a full size truck, so I have the room! 😂😂😂

The only craaaastuff you dont need is all the unnecessary cooking stuff and/how you sleep at night. Recovery Gear on the other hand are a necessity. Each item is a tool in the tool box Each serving a specific purpose. Better to have it and not need it verses needing it and not having it. At a minimum you should have at least 3 soft shackles, 1 tow strap and 1 kinetic strap.

I’ve seen more videos saying you don’t need things to start your journey. The videos I’ve watched basically say just get out and explore and youll figure it out what you need then.

The one thing I see is that a RUclipsr will introduce a product that was given to them or they purchased however rarely do I see them follow up with a 1, 2 or longer year update of quality etc.

I have watched your channel for quite some time and do not believe that you try and sell your viewers equipment that is a must have, you have always presented alternative gear that is budget friendly. I do see some channels with no budget friendly alternatives, I fabricate a lot of equipment myself using the OEM as a guide so I like seeing the gear, thanks for presenting information without being a salesman.

If you think you need a $100K rig or most of the fancy gear to overland, travel, or camp, because someone on the internet uses it or told you that you needed it, than you need to maybe take a step back work on yourself a bit.
I don't really believe there are a lot of people out there who think this. There are waaaaay more people who like to complain about the overland industry or overlanding RUclipsrs than there are people who actually think they NEED any of this stuff. You know, the types who sleep in a mud hut at minus 20 for 400 nights a year and all they need is their blanky and some bugs they dug up to eat.
Overlanding is a HOBBY. Lots of people spend wildly unnecessary amounts of time and money on all kinds of hobbies, because it's fun and they want too, not because they "need" too. The "you don't need it" crowd needs to get over themselves. They're not helping anything by revealing the "truth."

    I'm technically serious.
Buddy heat sucks in a RTT. Too hot or your cold.
Great video, great points made. So many creators are selling something and it's obvious.

in my personal opinion whether or not the influencer says you needs this that or the other thing, is only part of the picture. people are sold on the feeling they need to buy the products because they see you use them and even if they never go on the same type of trails you go on they get lost in the idea of doing those types of trails, much like when you were a kid and you saw your favorite tv star use a product you had to have that product.
