This song was based on an ancient poem that has several variations. If you're on the gallows, it means you're going to be executed so if you listen to the lyrics, this guy is about to be hung and he asks his friends if they have any money to pay off the hangman but they say they're too poor. His brother comes with some silver and gold and finally his sister arrives and the condemned man pleads with her to have sex with the hangman in the hopes that after being bribed with money and sex, he'll set the guy free. The hangman thanks him for the money and sex but says "and now I laugh and pull so hard (meaning he pulled on the rope to hang the guy) to see you swinging on the gallows pole". This is one of the few songs where the other three harmonize and sing the part of the hangman laughing ("a ha ha ha"). I think this is the only song where Jimmy plays a banjo. He'd never played one before but John Paul Jones had one there so Jimmy picked it up and learned to play enough to help come up with this song.
@Henrietta Skolnick~You've got some knowledge! I appreciate your sharing this because it's something I feel like I should have known but didn't. Keep bringing it!
@@tammieparrishmiller3669 you're too kind! I love Zep and the opportunity to discuss and discover more info. Now if you ask me where they played on the night of May 7, 1970, I couldn't tell you lol or what bootleg has the part where (fill in the blank) happened - nope, I don't know, but bits of trivia? I love it! Jimmy would trade Jonesy a guitar to keep the banjo that he played on this song but he ended up trading back years later, much to the relief of both musicians lol.

Yeah man this is one of my faves from Led Zeppelin and this album. Its so exciting yet very dark if you catch all the lyrics. The guy's friends and family try to save him but the hangman wins in the end. Such an amazing jam!
I can't ever pick a favorite Zep song, so I always say that my favorite Led Zeppelin song is the one I'm currently listening to! Every single song from all 8 albums are a masterpiece. Even more so, when you consider they created ALL 8 albums in just 10 years AND they were all 24 y/o and younger! (Robert was only 20) ***They started recording their 1st album in 1968 and released their last in 1979 (shortly before John Bonham died)***

Soon you give up on having a favorite because they all become your favorites in one way of another because each song touches your soul in a different way and always in a way that has meaning taking you into your closest and most treasured memories. Every emotion you have ever felt there is a Zeppelin song that will comfort you thru that emotion. That's why there are no bad Led Zeppelin songs only timeless masterpieces. Just one reason they where great then, they are great now and will forever be the greatest band to ever grace the stage.Welcome to the Ledhead family.
Hey, Biz (forgive me for beimg so familiar- been following you since the start of your Zep ride)- this song is an olde English folk song at least 200, maybe 300 years old. I guess I put Gallows Pole around the mid tier for this album. There a couple of songs I dont care for, a few I like a lot but that don't really stand out to me in their overall catalogue then a few that are among their best songs. I'll just try to rank them best to worst: Since I've Been Loving You Immigrant Song That's The Way Tangerine Gallows Pole Friends Bron Yr-Aur-Stomp Celebration Day Hats off to Roy Harper Out On The Tiles I can easily live without the last three. The rest is great. Since I've Been Loving You is a strong contender for their best song, and That's the Way is their best ballad. My two cents for the price of one!
I heard you say it... "I love this song." But you sould understant: this is really "Leadbelly". The Lead zepplen song is there. [And the way they did it; can be sorta proper. In resect to LeadBelly.] Freid please hear the "real" song. And you appear to; be a "Big strong man." * But I warn you: tears! You most likely; will be moved to tears. LeadBelly makes you cry. Take him to some shady bower
Save me from the wrath of this man
Please take him
Save me from the wrath of this man, man

But now I laugh and pull so hard
And see you swinging on the gallows pole, pole, pole
Swingin' on the gallows pole
Swingin' on the gallows pole
Swingin' on the gallows pole
Swingin' on the gallows pole, pole, pole, pole, pole, pole, pole, pole
A song about being hung. Yep in my top 5 zep songs.
HANGED!!!! NOT hung.Sorry, but this word never seems to be pronounced correctly.I'm a long time fan of LZ.Child of the 60's.I saw them in concert everytime they played at Raymond James stadium.I believe I must have saw them five or six timesThey are definitely a band for all generations--------Best rock/blues band ever!!
I guess I put Gallows Pole around the mid tier for this album. There a couple of songs I dont care for, a few I like a lot but that don't really stand out to me in their overall catalogue then a few that are among their best songs.
I'll just try to rank them best to worst:
Since I've Been Loving You
Immigrant Song
That's The Way
Tangerine
Gallows Pole
Friends
Bron Yr-Aur-Stomp
Celebration Day
Hats off to Roy Harper
Out On The Tiles
I can easily live without the last three. The rest is great. Since I've Been Loving You is a strong contender for their best song, and That's the Way is their best ballad. My two cents for the price of one!
His last hope was that his sistah would give a lil sumpin to save him 😂😂😂
That one left you speechless didn’t it?
Is there any band more diverse then Led Zeppelin???
I heard you say it... "I love this song." But you sould understant: this is really "Leadbelly". The Lead zepplen song is there. [And the way they did it; can be sorta proper. In resect to LeadBelly.] Freid please hear the "real" song. And you appear to; be a "Big strong man." * But I warn you: tears! You most likely; will be moved to tears. LeadBelly makes you cry. "Eventually". ruclips.net/video/ye2N_2ce3QE/видео.html
this is an acoustic album not a lot of drums
Why don't you answer me anymore??😪😢😭😭
What is and what should never be
So many great songs on this album -- which unfortunately makes this my least favorite on the album.
This is brutal social justice here
LED belly did it first ,not nearly as well though 😎
old tune from Leadbelly
Stop pausing the song and let it play
Shut up
@@watchbizmatik truth hurts!!
Too bad not many people really know the real meaning of this song🤭
It will really ruin your day…. but hey that’s American history
You didn't like it 😂. It shows lol ! I cant speak for everyone but I wont hate if you don't like Something lol !
😉 .... he really likes LZ though & doesn’t want to hate on them ... I’m with you though, not one of his favs 🤣
I can’t remember a time in my life that I DIDN’T like Led Zep.
Aww come on man... at least look up what a Gallows Pole is before listening to something like this... otherwise it kinda won't make sense.
