  • Episode #40 of the Tasting with Julien series where Julien Miquel tastes 3 Classic European wine styles from Bordeaux, France, Rioja, Spain, and Chianti Classico, Italy.
Tasting and reviewing these 3 vinos reveals the typical style of 3 of the most important and famous wine regions in the world.
    The wines tasted blind include:
    - Marques de Riscal Rioja Reserva 2014
    $23-$25 - Tempranillo/ Graciano/ Mazuelo
made from grapes from Tempranillo vines planted before 1970's, grown in the best clay-limestone soils of the Rioja Alavesa.
The Graciano and Mazuelo varieties, whose presence in the blend does not exceed 10%, provide crispness and a lively colour.
Riscal reservas spend around 2 years in American Oak barrels, producing a wine which corresponds to the classic Rioja style
    - Chateau Croix Mouton Bordeaux Supérieur 2014
    $20 98% MERLOT / 2% CABERNET FRANC
Malolactic fermentation in barrels and in vats with staves.
    Ageing:Coopers: Demptos: 40 %, Darnajou: 40 %, Remond: 20%
Maturing on lees during 3-4 months. No fining prior to bottling
    - Villa Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva 2013
    Predominantly Sangiovese + Cabernet
After the malolactic fermentation, which took place in stainless steel tanks for the Sangiovese and in oak barrels for the Cabernet.
A master blend of the wine was made and went in big barrels and partially in small barrels of Hungarian oak until Spring. The wine was bottled in June 2015 (6-8 months).

Great video as always Julien. Really appreciate the work you are doing so please keep it up as it is very educational for a lot of us. Not surprised that there was some confusion between those two wines, but it's so refreshing to see someone so honest on camera.

Bravo. Julien! What a delightful learning experience this video is. I hope to find more of your blind wine tasting videos here. Wondering if you have a video that demonstrates/teaches the correct way to taste the wine and explains why it's done that way. Thank you, mon ami.

Great video Julien, I loved how you walked us through your thinking and logic as you were tasting the wines.. Interesting that your very first impressions for wine 1 was spot on! I also really enjoyed the frankness of the results. You could have easily made a different "cut" of the video showing the corect choices, but leaving it as-is shows the learning process. Bravo!

Thank you man, will do :-) Did you have any specific ideas in mind? Face to face blind tasting that could be interesting to you? I've got plenty of ideas, but would be interested to hear your perspective, and get even more inspirations on what you'd like to watch and learn more about. Merci 🍷

As I was listening to your descriptions I immediately thought of Rioja for wine 1, even when you thought of Chianti. Second wine I thought of Bordeaux because of the vegetal qualities and the heaviness you spoke of. I was surprised by the oak you found in the third but still thought it would be the Chianti because of the expressed aging you found in the first wine. At the price point you mentioned, I personally think you find better quality from Chianti. So now let’s see...wow! I was fooled too. But thank you for figuring out and sharing why there was a discrepancy. Looks like I may need to look out for more Riojas. Thank you, Julien for another entertaining video.

just had a look at your channel. Congrats on launching a wine channel. It's cool to see the passion being shared. your first video is great, nice and precise info. you're on the right track. 2 little things if I may. Tune the music down a little bit so we hear your voice a little better. You have a nice voice and it'd make the speach a little clearer with less distraction from the music. Second, I'd say if you can, gather some b-roll footage of wine bottles, pouring or swirling wine when you get a chance, like when you're having Champagne, you film a little footage of it that you can use later to illustrate your videos. So over time you can accumulate b-roll footage for different topics. All the best with the youtube channel venture. It's hard, but it's fun. Looking forward to to following how things go and evolve for you. Cheers from france 🥂👍😃

    • @YouTubeJulien
      @YouTubeJulien  5 лет назад +3

Hi there, tx much. Glad you enjoyed :-)
What do you mean what to look for? In terms on what's on the labels, the styles, else? I'm not a huge expert, as you could probably tell from the video ;-) Haven't tried all producers and things. I love more modern styles of Rioja with less American oak and shorter ageing, more on a Bordeaux style, and with emphasis on the minerality and fruit expression. Quite a few come from Rioja Alta in that style as it's the cooler part of Rioja in the North. I really enjoyed the wines of Ysios I visited some time ago. Not only a stunning building ( see-> ruclips.net/video/IZ3ht5ssWno/видео.html ) but also fantastic old vines on great terroir with talented winemaker who looks for refinement in the grapes without overdoing the oak treatment.

Thanks Julien for the great video, very educational.
I will be visiting Bordeaux in July... any suggestions on which wineries to visit, perhaps 1-2 for each the right and left bank. Any suggestions would be appreciated... I'm from Australia and don't have too much experience with Bordeaux wines.

Thanks much George, glad you enjoyed. It's very nice of you to let me know :-)
I haven't actually spent that much time in Bordeaux touring recently, I did mainly quite a few years ago when I studied and worked there. The good news is, I think more Chateaus are now open and happy to receive visitors, so you should find more doors open.
Now, on the left bank. Well, I'd definitely recommend Chateau Margaux, it's my all-time favorite since i worked there back in 2003, such an iconic estate. I think they are open to visits but you'll have to get in touch via their website and book as much in advance as possible. The good think is probably not that many people dare to get in touch, so i think you might have a chance. Ask for details about the tours. I was last there a couple of years ago for making a video you can see here, that's give an idea of what to expect -> ruclips.net/video/UgTbGiPaibE/видео.html although you might also be able to see the new fermentation building which was closed when i visited because of harvest.
Then you might want to stop by at Chateau Mouton-Rothschild. Pretty sure they are open and well organised to receive visitors, beautiful winery and a nice museum around arts and things, some hints into what to see there here-> ruclips.net/video/MQuQf5lzYuY/видео.html
I made this video for Chateau Giscours in Margaux, and I think it's a nice tour as well, although perhaps favor the other two if you see only 2.
Everyone says La Cité du Vin (the wine musuem in Bordeaux city) is worth a detour especially if you don't know Bordeaux wine too much to start with.
I haven't toured the right bnk much at all lately, but here are a couple thoughts.
La Dominique in Saint-Emilion looks fun. They have a great restaurant up their modern red building, and I thiink you may be able to do a tour, looks like they have a wine & food pairing experience too which could be nice. the resturant is very nice, fantastic view over some of the top estates around there. Maybe have a look here-> www.winepaths.com/wine/france/bordeaux/saint-emilion/chateau-la-dominique
In pomerol, this one could be nice , Petit Village makes great Pomerol wines so could be interestig if you could get in, see-> www.winepaths.com/wine/france/bordeaux/chateau-petit-village/private-tour-tasting-in-pomerol
Perhaps enquire through this Wine Paths website and see what the conditions are, if it suits.
Hope thi shelps. thanks for the support and encouragements :-)

It is normal you made a confusion with Marques de Riscal Reserva 2014. Despite the 24 months in oak casks, Marques de Riscal winery has been focused since long time in giving more fruity aspects to his wines instead of the Rioja classic Oak, and this 2014 is even more evident than other years vintage like 2010 or 2011.

Wow, thanks for the insight Juan. It's reassuring to know. I'm not the best blind taster in any case, but yes, this was particularly confusing!. Cheers man. Salud!

Interesting Juan. I was thinking the Antinori use of oak on the Chianti night have been more confusing that the more fruity aspects of the Rioja. With each wine taking on some of the other’s more standard traits that definitely made it a test. Julien, great video. Juan, thanks for the info.
