The instrument is called a Duduk. Its a wind instrument from the middle east. Gong are something else! Funny you should mention Hawkwind as these two bands drink from the same reservoir of pure liquid LSD 25. Gong is a bit more jazzy than Hawkwind ever was. Blondie (lol) is Daevid Allen, who was also a founding member of Soft Machine. Technically, these guys are considered part of the Canterbury Scene. I just like the groove here. Allen died a few years back and now the band is fronted by Kavus Torabi and they are now more guitar oriented and fully emerged into the Psychedelic movement. The early stuff was all trippin hippie stuff and the late 70s stuff was solid jazz. Never a dull moment with this band. Hope everyone enjoys!!
Gong is definitely a rabbit hole band, although collective is a better term. They were formed in the UK in 1967 by Aussie guitarist Daevid Allen (who earlier co-founded Soft Machine), and vocalist Gilli Smyth, and were part of the Canterbury Scene. They started out as psychedelic space rock, but morphed into jazz rock, and later back into psychedelia. Steve Hillage, Bill Bruford, and Alan Holdsworth were all one-time members. To complicate things even further, there were numerous named Gong phases, as well as offshoots and spinoffs. I have seen a few dizzyingly complex family tree diagrams, and even they are incomplete.
LRoi! Where you been man? Thanks for the background info. Very informative. I never followed Gong back in the day. One of many blind spots when it came to prog rock. Grateful that they've been featured a few times in this channel so I can hear what I've been missing. Thanks for checking in!
@@shoutinchuck3363- Well, for the past six months or so I have been confronted with putting 10 lbs of shit in a 5 lb bag, so many of my pleasures fell by the wayside. That said, I first discovered Gong in 1970 when I was a HS senior through Tucson's legendary freeform underground FM station, KWFM 92.9. A few years later. I got to see them live in Tempe during their heyday.
@@HisboiLRoi Sorry to hear you've been side-tracked. Good to see you back. Sounds like you were an early adopter of Gong. Very cool. You reminded me of how great the early FM rock stations were. "Underground" radio is what we used to call it. AM played the Top 40. FM played the "heavy" stuff like Gong.
Good choice. I thought they were good but never got any airplay. I Never Glid Before and Witches Song were a couple of their songs that were favorites of mine.
Buncha trippin' hippies. My kinda folks. Ha ha! This has Uncle Chaz' fingerprints all over it. Actually, I think that guy in the crowd they zoomed in on was Chaz. Pretty sure it was him. Like Dan, I have so many questions: What kind of horn is that? What kind of guitar is that? And where did the sax player get that tie-dyed shirt? Because I owned one just like it back in the late 60s. 🤣Thanks for the review SAD! Good pick Chaz!
Lol. Thanks Chuck! The horn thing is a duduk. David Allen's guitar is a Steinberger and he playing it glissando style. David Gilmour used to employ this style circa Saucerful of Secrets era. Its just a variant of slide guitar playing. Glad you liked it!
Cool groove, odd, anachronistic vibe! Everyone transplanted from different times. I recall the term glissando applied to whatever Steve Hillage was doing on guitar in the mid-70s, though my impression from my reading and the record I bought was referring to his fretting hand rather than some appurtenance or tool. Wotevs 🙄 🤣 ✌🏼😊🎶❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊
Never glid before, flying teapot, radio gnome. Lots of interesting music....

We definitely enjoyed and felt the Hawkwind connection! Thanks for all the info Chaz! RIP to Allen🕊️🕯️.
And the sax player is Theo Travis who is currently in Soft Machine, he also plays the Duduk and recently released an album featuring it.
Hoping for more Gong. One of my favourite bands. Always a good groove
I saw Gong play (loudly) in a small lounge on board Cruise to the Edge in 2019. Post Daevid Allen but still a great band in its own right!

That’s a cool line up! Thanks for the history!

The fabulous Gong. 50 years and counting so Blondie is now deceased. An ensemble stretching between France and Wales.
Their next album was called “Rejoice, I’m Dead” which had some prerecorded vocals

Blondie is Daevid Allen. He formed Gong after leaving Soft Machine.
They’d been in Ibiza and travelled back overland. Daevid was Australian and his visa has run out so he has to stay in France, where he formed Gong
The album "You" is a must listen if you are into space prog.rock...

😆thanks for watching Chuck! Looks like we’re getting our answers in the comments!
Welcome to the wacky world of Daevid Allen, creator of Space Rock 🙂

Percolations Part I & II
Interesting music and kinda cool. I almost clicked off during the rather drawn out duduk intro. Glad I stuck around.
Glad you stuck around too Sootikins! Thanks for watching!
