VLAN: Static vs Dynamic

  • Static VLAN & Dynamic VLAN
VLAN stands for Virtual Local Area Network. VLAN is a logical network that can group devices /users regardless of their different physical locations.
A static VLAN is a “port-based VLAN”. This type of VLAN requires manual assignment of individual ports on a switch to a virtual network. Once ports are assigned, they are always associated with their pre-assigned VLANS.
Dynamic VLAN is different. We define dynamic VLAN based on a device instead of port location. Dynamic VLAN is usually MAC-based, which means we define VLAN membership according to a device’s MAC address. But we can define VLAN membership based on the IP address of a device if we want to.

In the summary you mentioned, one physical port can be a member of multiple VLANs; e.g. Physical Port 1 could be VLAN 1, 2, 3 but you did not mention it before on how this is possible. Thanks again for your awesome videos, very educational! Simple & straightforward!

From Cisco Documentation: A dynamic-access port can belong to only one VLAN at a time, but the VLAN can change over time, depending on the MAC addresses seen.

Good luck with your network +. From my experiences, the first part (performance-based) is time-consuming, and the multiple-choice (the second part) is easier. I would do the second part first, and come back to do the first part (performance-based) later so that I won't get stuck with some tricky questions and spend all my precious time.

Even though there is a new device plug into a port in static VLAN, that new device still cannot join the network because the port was pre-assigned for a specific device already?

Hi there, please make a tutorial video about how we can create vlan for wireless devices on our router .in other words how we can have a network for example with 2 or 3 vlan sections , 1 or 2 computer connect by RG45 to router and some devices connect wirelessly how we can have 2 separate VLAN ?? Thnx

First of all, I would like to thank you for your positive energy and your interesting way of teaching. Thank you:-)
Second, I want you to help me. or maybe to make a video about the structure of the network, in terms of languages, for example, I am a beginner in learning networks, firewall, security and the languages that are related to this area, in fact, I always confused what languages are for server-side and which are for client-side, I did search about it but I am still confused and have no clear image of the structure. I hope, I explained my purpose clearly:-(
    Thanks a lot

@@Hsan2k23 For example, Java Script is a programing language, which is both server and client-side, for server-side it is called Angular (if I mentioned correctly!) BUT, why? Which attributes make it act this way? It is about being object-oriented?!!!!!!!!!!!! In fact, I don't know which programming languages are server-side, which are client-side, what is the main difference between them, for example, when we say PHP is only a server-side language why it is not proper to program front end with this language and also what about other languages? Python, React, React Native, Nodejs, asp.net, and so on. Generally, I know which one is server-side and which is client-side, but I do not understand the exact structure.
I hope, I explained clearly what I mean!

"Creating static VLANs is the most common way to create a VLAN, and one of the reasons
for that is because static VLANs are the most secure. This security stems from the fact that
any switch port you’ve assigned a VLAN association to will always maintain it unless you
    change the port assignment manually".

If you call it a hole, you make $10,000 a year. If you call it a socket, you make 50. If you call it a port, you make 75. And if you call it an interface, you make 100.
