    Hi friends! I've been noticing a lot of comments on my older videos where people tell me to turn off the background music! Thanks for the feedback- the advice was heeded a while back (November 2017-ish, around the time I was able to upgrade my audio quality), so be sure to check out some of my newer videos. 😊
    PS: This video is especially old (my very first review!), and although the format is something I've stuck to for all future reviews, the quality of my newer videos is somewhat improved!

      I like the background music, so I guess it's personal preference. :)

    Excited to have come across your videos. Thank you so much for this review. As a new artist I could easily get caught up in buying expensive supplies that aren't suited for what I'm doing. The work that you put in to these videos is readily apparent and gratefully appreciated.

      I'm so glad you like what I do and find these videos helpful! I know how difficult it can be to choose art supplies and get a good insight of what products are like- so I try and make these videos answer the questions I would have and the content that I would've looked for to help me make a decision. I'm pleased to know that these videos help!

    Oops! The video was getting a bit long so I didn't compare these pencils against some other popular brands. Sorry!
    I'll be comparing Polychromos and Prismacolors in the future, perhaps I'll shoehorn Derwent Drawing and a few other sets into that comparison too. Leave a comment if you have any ideas on what to compare the sets on! :)

    Thank you for this review ❤️ I have bought the white pencil for testing. And I am absolutely convinced. I love the thickness, it fits comfortably in my hands. The mine doesn’t break in sharpener. It’s a very good quality. The opacity is amazing. I will buy the 24 set. The only disadvantage, like you said, the small amount of colours :-(

    A really humble suggestion I use to keep my round pencils on the slightly angled table: I pinch off a small blob of Blu-Tac and roll it into a strip, then wrap it tight round the barrel of the pencil near the top and flatten it a bit. Keeps it from rolling, and comes right off with no trace.

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  5 лет назад

      I'd avoid using workable fixative on a paper that's so thin (like Canson Mi-Teintes- I find it buckles quite easily). But yes! For more robust papers I use Brush & Pencil's Touch-Up Texture a lot as a workable fixative- I like the fact it can be painted on and. I don't get on with spray fixatives.

    Hi! I love your videos and this one very much too, very informative as well as nice to watch! I have derwent skintone 6-set. I love them and I'm considering buying these ones but the 24-set. I'm a beginner and drawing mostly portraits right now. I don't use solvents; I have the derwent blender and burnisher but feel I don't know how to use them yet. I'd like it very much to see you drawing a portrait with these pencils. ;-) Bye from Argentina!

      Hi María! I'm glad you liked my video.
      Maybe this video will help you with using your blender: ruclips.net/video/Tf9jqcQaLgk/видео.html
      I have another video coming very soon revisiting this topic, where I explain how I use different blenders and also compare them too.
      I use the 24 set all the time (I upgraded shortly after I created this video). They're excellent pencils, I seriously recommend them! I would also recommend looking at a harder pencil to be used for detailing. as the Derwent Drawing don't hold a fine point very well. Polychromos would be a good choice. :)
      I'm not a human portrait artist (I mainly draw pets, mammals and insects), so I don't think I'll be drawing a person any time soon, but I have completed a self-portrait in mixed media, which you can watch in this video: ruclips.net/video/ZolsQcusRe8/видео.html

      Hi Sylvie! These aren't new at all, the Derwent Drawing pencils have been around for a number of years now. Derwent released the Procolour coloured pencil range last year and are set to release the Derwent "Lightfast" range this summer.
      The 24 set is great (the largest set there is), I did an update video for those. They're very affordable pencils and great quality. I really recommend them- if you think you'll use them and enjoy them (and of course have the money to buy them) I think they'd be a great investment :)

Big thank's for these great info and i will purchase these after i will watch you video. Claudia, these pencils are they good to color on hour coloring books or they need a better quality paper ??? • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  6 лет назад

      The pencils should work fine on colouring book paper. They are very pigmented and have soft laydown. You may find that very smooth paper won't accept as many layers, but will still work fine.
      Derwent pencils are much more reasonably priced in the UK and Europe from what I've heard and seen as well- they are affordable for me but not so much for my American viewers.

    fantastic fox! can you do more layers over the derwent colorless blender?once you blend the colors. confused about using blender/burnisher, new to colored pencils.

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  5 лет назад +1

      Blending pencils act more like "burnishers". They flatten the grain of the paper and apply a layer of (transparent) wax over the top of your pencil layers. As such, using blending pencils greatly limits the ability to layer further. I recommend only using it on your final layers on areas you want a smooth and even finish.

    Lovely review as usual Claudia! I've not seen anyone demonstrate the slight water solubility of these pencils, did you know they could blend with water? Not in a way like a watercolor pencil does, but anyway like you would use a solvent. Very interesting I'm curious if he have tried this or not? It's not as if they move very well with a water brush, but more like a wet blending stump. Super interesting I thought when I noticed this. Was not expecting it.

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  4 года назад

      From my experience, many highly pigmented coloured pencils have this ability- some colours also tend to be more soluble than others.

    This kind of fox drawing should be on the tin box so in order for the colours

  • @bostonblackie9503
    @bostonblackie9503 4 года назад

    They don't have a fox on the tin anymore, it is a landscape scene. I liked the fox. For small intricate parts you could use Derwent Studio. Similar to Prismacolor Verithin . It amazes me that people buy Studio and expect them to be a universal pencil. They call them the worst coloured pencil they have ever bought. Due to the fact they have not taken the time to understand what they are buying. They are a particular pencil for a purpose they do very well.

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  4 года назад +1

      I certainly agree that the properties of different pencils lend themselves better (or worse) to different application. Prismacolor and Polychromos are pretty good all-rounders, so I suppose it doesn't surprise me that some people would assume other coloured pencils are also all-rounders. Like you say, it's important to research and look for reviews prior to purchase!
      To be honest though, I get why Studio/Artists gets a lot of hate. I have the whole 72 set, plus a selection of open stock pencils. The vast majority of the Studio set have pretty poor lightfastness ratings, yet for the price they sell at and the audience they market at, one would expect the ratings to be better. The pigment payoff is pretty low compared to other pencils too and they're quite hard and waxy- but for me, sometimes that suits me just fine! Like you say, good for some subtle detailing :)

      Keep it up, Sylvie! Lots of successful artists aren't always happy with their work- we are often too critical of ourselves. I try to make sure I'm enjoying the process rather than aiming for the perfect outcome, that way I'm usually happier and success is easier to achieve. Thanks for your comments!

    Do you use any fixative on any coloured pencil drawings? or is thee no need too?

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  5 лет назад

      Great question! There's no need need to use fixative.
      If framed and displayed properly (behind UV protective glass etc), fixatives offer no real benefits and instead could potentially cause problems.
      Some fixatives degrade over time (e.g. yellowing), and it's quite common for any fixative to alter the colours of the piece after application. Additionally, spotty or inconsistent application could ruin a piece.

    My dad got me the 72 set for Christmas, but I feel really bad now because after trying them out I really don't like them and really want to tell him to send them back to save the money, but I don't want to act ungrateful for a present that he thought about (and is very expensive) and disappoint him that I don't like it...

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  5 лет назад

      You must be talking about a different Derwent set as these Drawing pencils don't come available in 72 sets.
      I don't think you can return something you've already used unless they are defective, but you could certainly sell them on for a price close to what they retail for. Hopefully your Dad understands that it's better to end up with something that you'll actually use and enjoy. It was kind if him to think of your hobby though and try to buy something you'd like- purchasing art supplies for somebody else is very difficult as it's so personal!

    Can you put a lighter colour like white over a darker or does it like smears together?

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  7 лет назад

      You can get paler colours to lay on top of darker ones, but they do have a tendency to pick up and drag the darker one. I think the more dark pigment that's on the paper, the less pure the lighter colour will look. Also keep an eye on the pencil tip and clean as necessary to avoid contamination. I'd still recommend working from light to dark with these pencils but absolutely, their pigmentation and opacity makes them easier to layer lights over darks than other coloured pencils.
      As always, I recommend doing some test swatches and samples before using them on an important piece. :)
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Can you also try color skin with them??

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  7 лет назад

      Antonia Dragongirl You can- the 24 set has some pale colours that work well for skin. I don't often do human portraiture, but I've seen people recommend the set for it. They blend smoothly so are great for creating a base for skin, but to create highly realistic skin it's useful to have a wider colour palette in order to add subtle nuance. I like to glaze and add detail with polychromos over the top of Derwent Drawing because the colour range is larger and they hold a sharper point.

    I've went out today and bought 3 pencils (but the Colorsoft) just to try them out, I think the ones that you are using are different? Don't know, anyway I'm also waiting on the mail for a the skin tone set. For the longest I've been wanting to get a set and just color away, I have use the graphite pencils for the longest in my Art Life, they are my got to drawing pencils. I love, love, love your drawings they are beautiful, thanks for your video it gave me more confidence that I might end up getting a big set pretty soon, will see :)

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  4 года назад

      Hi! Indeed, the Coloursoft are different- Derwent are a brand that makes many different ranges of coloured pencils, each with quite different properties. I have a similar review about the coloursoft which you can find here: ruclips.net/video/zB9nuP60JsM/видео.html
      The Drawing only come in 24 natural colours, whereas the Coloursoft are available in 72 colours (and lots of different bright shades too). Other comparisons that can be made are that I feel that the Drawing are more pigmented and opaque compared to the Coloursoft, and that the Drawing feel slightly dryer in laydown.

    How would these 12 pencils do with portraiture compared to Prisma’s portraiture set?

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  5 лет назад

      I haven't tried prismacolor's portraiture set so I can't speak for them, but I would definitely recommend the 24 Derwent Drawing set over the 12 set- the 24 set has a much better range of paler colours that are well suited for drawing both light and dark coloured skin. Wheat, Mars Violet and Light Sienna are particularly excellent.
      That being said, as you can see by the usual contents of my videos, I'm not a human portraiture artist so maybe I'm not the best person to ask. Most human CP artists I've spoken to highly rate Luminance (also wax based and an incredible selection of neutral/skin tones).

    Hey. I've watched a couple of your reviews and still can't decide on the exact brand, and I was wondering. From all Derwent series which would you recommend for a person that learns the coloured pencil technique but: wants to work with layers, wants smooth effects and wants to work on a sturdier paper which is often textured (medium or heavily textured) and what kind of paper do you recommend? Thanks in advance.

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  5 лет назад +1

      I'm not particularly experienced with heavily textured paper so I'm not sure how good my recommendation will be- I personally don't like it for coloured pencils as it's incredibly difficult to get fine detail and control on coarse grained paper, and requires burnishing to get a smooth finish
      .
      Unfortunately I don't have expertise in all Derwent ranges as well- specifically I haven't tried their Procolour or Lightfast ranges. Additionally, unless you have a really good reason to specifically go with Derwent, I wouldn't rule out other brands!
      Faber-Castell Polychromos sound like a good choice for instance (and something I recommend a lot as a core/starter set)- they are very versatile pencils and firm enough to sharpen to and maintain a fine point- ideal for working into the tooth of the heavily textured paper you'd like to use. They also layer wonderfully, and their slight transparency means that they can be layered to create subtle blends.
      Unless you're using solvents, I'd suggest staying away from soft wax based pencils as you may find it difficult to work them into the grain of the paper without having to sharpening them constantly.
      You may find this video helpful: ruclips.net/video/jKZOEPkfYg0/видео.html
      My favourite paper is clairefontaine pastelmat (I even have a video about it!)- and although that's considered a textured paper, the grain is very fine (although it is abrasive). I also like the reverse side of Canson Mi-Teintes.
      As mentioned earlier, I don't get along with heavily textured paper so I don't have anything I can really recommend because I haven't explored it much. I do recommend trying out a bunch of different surfaces if you can- CP can give very different feels and techniques on different papers!
      Sorry I can't be of more help!

    Hey, thanks for the video it was great. I just purchased these pencils and am fairly new to using coloured pencils in general. I really like them but my only issue when drawing fur is that the lighter pencils pick up the dark that they just draw over and place it back on the page in the next stroke. Mainly had this issue with tiger fur when I wanted to transition between stripes. Any thoughts?

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  7 лет назад +2

      Dio Raven Halford Hi! Thanks for watching and commenting! :)
      If the problem is the tip of the lighter pencil getting dirtied, wipe it off on something before drawing your next stroke. Scribble on some scrap paper, refine the point with one of those pencil sandpaper blocks... I find myself scribbling on my masking tape (that's taping the piece down) quite often just because it's right there, quite textured (so does a good job of removing the excess pigment) and will be thrown away afterwards anyway. :D Rotating the pencil helps a bit too, at least then you shouldn't need to clean the point after every stroke.
      But if you're finding that the colour is being dragged across in the same stroke, then it might be worth planning your piece from light to dark, at least on the areas you want to remain crisp and well defined. Another option might be to use something like a workable fixative to keep the dark colours well in place, but I haven't tried this myself.
      Hope this helps! :)
