Probably a design dictated by management. A rubber belt costs less than a chain, and when multiplied by millions of units, the cost adds up. It’s all about the bottom line which drives the quarterly earnings which affects stock price which results in the compensation for C-suite managers. Follow the $$$.

I'm a fleet manager for a company car supply business and I've placed maybe 5000/6000 cars with the ecoboost engine and I can confirm the newer (19 plate onwards) engine is WAYYYYYYYYY better than the old engine. I've placed over 3000 Pumas/Focus with the 1L MHEV engine and we have had a much lower failure rate than pre-19.
I cant say we have noticed a higher than normal fire rate in any of the Eco boost range. BMWs have the highest fire rate and this is reflected in their insurance.
When ever a car gets written off we get access to the reports. I personally think Ford gets a real hard time, We have a great working relationship with them. We have had much larger issues with Audi, Volkswagen, BMW and Tesla.
I personally drive a Ford Focus, that says a lot if you ask me.

    • @carukchannel
      @carukchannel  2 месяца назад +2

    • @kingsknightuk
      @kingsknightuk 2 месяца назад +9

@@carukchannel I cannot really comment on older Fords but we haven't had any complaints about the influx of fires. I think people's perspective is off when it comes to these "stories". People forget or don't know that Ford's are the UKs best selling car. Just the Fiesta and puma have sold tens of millions in the last 10 years so if you're looking at rates of failure it is incredibly low.
Don't forget its only the people with issues will be posting issues, the 10s of millions of people who just drive their cars will be silent.
Please don't get me wrong. All engines/manufacturers have issues but I find it strange that it seems to be Ford that gets the brunt of the negative press.
BMW/Mini have had a VERY long standing issue with their timing chains yet most people barely report on it. The UK police moved from BMW to Ford because of their high rate of fires and unreliability. Yet barely anyone spoke about it...
As someone who deals with millions of pounds worth of cars a year I find it quite odd how people cherry pick what issues to highlight.

Not sure if they'll release info but they might if it's generic ie list of makes and model of vehicles involved in a fire claim, but they may also charge for time spent. The For Escape, in the USA, fitted with the 1.5 Ecoboost engine, also suffered a number of fires. These were traced to fuel lines that ran close to the exhaust manifold and deteriorated prematurely and leaked causing the fires. Ford USA recalled the affected models and repaired the vehicles. They advised owners not to drive the vehicles and offered to collect them for repair.
This same engine was also fitted to the Ford Kuga sold in South Africa. Quite a number of these also caught fire, one of which resulted in the death of the driver. Initially Ford South Africa denied there was a problem with the vehicles. However the death of a driver prompted Ford to investigate and it discovered that the problem was with the head of the engine, that developed a crack which caused oil to leak and catch fire. Ford South Africa, however accepted no responsibility for the death and claimed that the Kuga in question did not suffer an engine fire, but a fire that started at the rear of the vehicle. The outcome of this case is unknown as the family of the deceased sued Ford South Africa. Ford South Africa did recall the models fitted with these so called defective heads and repaired them at their cost.
Some believe that issue was the same as the one in the USA as the engines were the same. There were no issues in South Africa with the 1.0 Ecoboost catching fire. If I'm not mistaken, the 1.6 Ecoboost was fitted to Ford Vehicles sold in South Africa. There has also been no mention of the wet belt problem in South Africa.

The Ford 1.0 EcoBoost engine fitted to the Fiesta, Focus, B Max, and some Ford Connect vans uses a wet belt that runs inside the engine. Other EcoBoost engines, such as the 1.5 and 1.6 EcoBoost, have a conventional dry timing belt, while the 2.0 EcoBoost uses a timing chain.

I've always taken advice that if ever, any engine oil drips onto the drive-belt, then the contamination should always be thoroughly removed as soon as possible. The Eco-Boost's timing belt looks to be of the same material as the drive-belt. Submerging it in oil sounds disastrous, and an exercise in planned obsolescence.

Just had a problem with my 2018 Ecoboost 1.0 , a very strong smell of petrol started coming through the air vents when the car came to a stop and also on tick over , no obvious signs of a leak until I ran it into the garage and my mechanic shone a light on the fuel rail only to reveal a fine mist of fuel spraying out from a very small crack in one of the joints on the rail itself straight onto the red hot engine . Ford quoted £350 + vat for the part , then fitting on top , was very lucky to find a second hand one which has cured the problem .

So I asked Ford UK and the wet belt manufacturer' DAYCO "which year did the Ford factory production line first start fitting the upgraded belt with PTFE protection on the belt teeth to stop the rubber degradation' The reply was if Ford had to admit the belt needed improvement there must have been a problem with the original. So, no date will be available for mechanics to decide whether the belt in a particular ecoboost is in need of changing early.

Service history is a get out clause.
No servicing by Ford incudes a wet belt examination, the only thing of relevance is oil and filter change.
If you do this you should be covered.
I did oil changes myself (Castrol 5W20 E stop start) so I am excluded. Why did I do this?
Ford became too expensive ( £162 rose to £455) and they were dangerously incompetent (brake failure after service).
So I checked with several garages what oil they would use. None used Castrol and refused to use Castrol even if I supplied it!
I contacted Ford asking what other brands of oil they approve for STOP START ecoboost.
    They did not reply.
That gave me two choices. Pay stupid money to incompetent Ford grease monkeys or DIY.
I chose DIY, and now if my engine goes boom, I pay the penalty for doing nothing wrong.

I almost bought a new citroen with puretech and came close to getting a 70k miles C-Max. And if everyone did the same as me then the older cars and the newer cars would swap price tags - and rightly so, in my view. Then the car industry would have to revert to sensible design values because that's what the market demanded. Of course we still need to ensure cars are disposed of at end-of-life sustainably but that's not happening with the BEVs, definitely not.

The specific grade and make up of synthetic oil that's supposed to be used in ecoboost does NOT degrade the belt, its the unburnt fuel that builds up in the oil doing the damage. Hence its essential to make regular oil changes, and make sure that any other items that could lead to extra leakage of fuel into the oil are regularly checked such as sealing rings efficient injectors etc. Town driving (idling) is particularly liable to leak fuel into oil, hence city cars needs more frequent oil changes ideally annually. Its a system that works fine in well confined conditions (Such as industrial equipment) but unrealistic in cars used by Joe Public.

What you could do is fit a voltmeter on the dash with the +ve fused wire on the battery and -ve to body. If you smell something ominous and the needle has fallen from about 14 to about 12 its time to park up and unstrap the kids from the back seat. However this will of course only apply with electrical faults not fuel spillage. My dolomites have been saved due to a gauge on the dash.

I have a 68 plate grandland x 1.2 turbo with 33k miles which had the same problem of cracked cam belt - which can be seen through the oil filler cap. Took the car to the main Vauxhall dealership and they said they could not raise a complaint with Vauxhall uk as no warning lights had come up. I went straight to Vauxhall complaints department- found online and raised the issue with them showing photographic/ video evidence of the cracked belt. Two days later I had a phone call back to say they would honour a repair up to £2k. It was booked in at the same dealership that I bought the car from and repaired at no cost to myself.
I strongly advise that you contact Vauxhall complaints department and raise this issue.
      Good luck.

Whilst waiting for the wife in Sainsburys car park recently, I noticed that the car next to me was a Fiesta with the Ecoboost engine. When the driver returned I asked her if she was up to date with the current situation regarding this engine. She replied that she wasn’t really interested as the Fiesta was only a courtesy car whilst her Range Rover Evoque was in the garage for the umpteenth time. She assured me that once it was returned to her she was getting rid of it. I vaguely remember that the Range Rover was once voted the car most likely to leave you stranded at the side of the road.

Had my belt changed pre-emptively on my 2013 cmax by an independent garage at about 96000 miles last year. The quote was £2000 by Ford and £1200 from independent garage so I went with the cheaper option. The garage botched the job and I had bent valves several months later due to I presume their timing instrument being out of spec so my check engine light went off and car failed MOT. If I wanted to drive again I had to go to Ford and had to pay almost £4000 for all the labour and parts that had to be changed. They also botched the job as their timing instrument was also inaccurate due to wear and check engine light kept coming on with camshaft timing issues. They repaired in warranty and timed again. What I'm trying to say is that even the authorised Ford garage make mistakes on this maintenance. It is a huge job they cost me the price of the car at the time and even though the rest of my Cmax is fine and I'll drive it until it dies, I'm not buying a Ford again. I totally should have sold it before it turned 10 and bought something else.

The issue can't be rectified by them as it's internal, they would have to change complete powerplant but redesign it first. Compared to Opel it isn't a viable option. Their cranks tend to wear and rattle after pumps get blocked, cat starts to overheat, then stuff melts at the front of the engine.

  • @AndyB365

As far as I was aware there was a recall on the 1.6 ecoboost that retrofitted a coolant level sensor as they were burning through coolant due to whatever reason (cracked expansion tanks, leaking lines, especially the smaller plastic coolant return line that snakes around the engine bay), and upon overheating the head would crack and any oil leaking out could get on the exhaust and catch fire. Ford refused to do this on my car so I can only presume it's an American recall and it overheated very quietly on cruise control and cooked the head. It's been laid up for a year now because I can't afford to replace the engine.

Hi Lee, Flfor some reason, Ford did change their older wet belt system on later cars, however the facelifted fiesta without MHEV technology have got the older wet belt engine, which doesn't make sense?!! They are the same exact engine as the ones that Ford are 'repairing for free', before 2019. Maybe because it's not as old yet or Ford know that there are going to be so many on the road, they don't want to pay out on newer cars. Would like to know your thoughts on them bringing back the older engine in the facelifted fiesta with 95ps. Thanks.

I have also a focus mk3.5 1.0 st line 2018 and I am completely satisfied with it, in all fields. But I service it annually with oil changes annually, or every 7.500 km with the recommended oil. In Greece the average air temperature is significantly higher than Britain, but although I hadn't reliability problems. It's completely true what stated by other commentators that almost all turbo engines from 2007 on have their own problems that not all appear in the Internet forums. Add to that that most people do not use and maintain them correctly, as well as that engines like the ecoboost are receiving catastrophic tuning from #technicians # not knowing what they are doing and hence you have the result commented in this video which in most cases is thrown to the manufacturer. The Internet is full of ecoboost 1.0 tuning to 160-180 hp, with changes only to the program and the peripherals. How long you think they will survive? But there is a video on the HOLLAND AUTO WEEK magazine of a red fiesta tuned to 160 hp which at the time of test had more than 326.000 km.

I am aware failures happen this is just my experience. I love my car but I am aware that ultimately I am going to have to pay approximately £1500 to change the belt prematurely and it does concern me quite a bit. To give the uninitiated some idea, we currently have a family members Ford Focus 1.0L EcoBoost 2013 in the garage having an emergency repair now. 75k miles and the pump strainer is blocked full of belt debris, causing oil starvation, and hence why there was sudden limp mode or loss of boost or power. Belt nearly snapped! Time consuming job, special tools needed to lock the engine timing. Qoutes as low as £800 - £1200, Turbocharger also being replaced. Be prepared to shell out every 60k miles for a new weltbelt or new engine if you forget replacing 😎 Thanks Ford for keeping your emissions in line with government regulations, and building an unreliable engine, I dont suppose your lawyers want to recall all the 1L EcoBoost engines you manufactured on this planet for a free wetbelt replacement every 60k miles no? Might give Ford's accountants a bit of a financial headache this one, but least the 'get out clause' of FSH replacements helps make you feel better 😉. As a long time Ford owner, I dont think i like their vehicles anymore.
