Thank you so much for this excellent video. Two of the greatest Ballet dancers of all times: Ekaterina Maximova and Vladimir Vasiliev. We miss you, Katya, but your charm is eternal.
This is one of the best duets in ballet history not only Don Quixote performance. they possessed stunning technique, bodies, jumps, extension and artistic quality. Have not seen better yet.
It's hard to believe that this performance is from 1972: it could be 2020. Such style, musicality, technique, energy and joy - and what the French call "complicité" in their partnership. It makes me think that this version of the pas de deux should be revived - it's more interesting than many versions performed today. (Did that stage have a flight of stairs in front of it; it made me cringe. Maybe it was an illusion of the set).

she seems to be ahead of her time..I mean, most dancers at that time danced with a certain style that is percieved in most performances, but Ekaterina dances as if she were living in the year 2011!! she's amazing, and vasiliev is too!!!
The Bolshoi Ballet came to London in (I think) 1974,and played at the London Coliseum,where I was (luckily) working. I met both Vladimir and Ekaterina(amongst others) and they were very friendly and down to earth. The other touring company (in Canada) contained Mikhail Barishnikov (who defected) this meant that the London comapny were under armed(KGB) guard after that.Before it had been free and easy. I was lucky,in the fact that I got to see all the performances for free!
Не надо сравнивать Максимову и Плисецкую. У Плисецкой не было такого партнера,как Васильев. Васильев, кстати, переместил апофеоз балета в последниий акт, раньше он был в первом. Пик Максимовой и Плисецкой разнесены по времени, к тому же Григорович избавлялся от ярких личностей, как только по своему уму, он мог без них обходится. В Большом, поклонники Кати и Маи не враждовали, а чаще ходили на те и другие спектакли.
Странные балетные фанаты все время пытаются найти самую или самого лучшую/лучшего,, и на все времена. К счастью, в искусстве так не бывает, и не должно. В каждом временном периоде, в каждом поколении есть артисты, достигающие вершин техники (современного им пластического языка), среди них выделяются носители яркой творческой индивидуальности в своем амплуа и природой дарования, совпадающей со своим временем и отражающем его, и совсем исключительные - искусство которых поднимается над конкретным, материальным, телесным и уходит во вневременное, духовное, вечное, и у каждого великого, гениального артиста своя тема и своя миссия. И как определить, кто лучше? Это все трансформация, грани и оттенки красоты, это поиск человеком смыслов бытия и радости жизни. И все великие - Анна Павлова, Галина Уланова, Майя Плисецкая, и другие немеркнущие звёзды - это божественный дар нам всем. Владимир Васильев и Екатерина Максимова - целая эпоха в балете, столько в них счастья, праздника, искрометности, изящества, артистизма, как велик диапазон их возможностей - и драма, и комедия, и лирика, и трагедия. Великолепные!
Из сбежавших,мне понятен только Нуриев. Макарова погналась за славой и деньгами ( свобода ?), Барышников заранее готовился, сбежал после того, как увидел Паганини Васильева. Нуриев был вынужден. Для артиста балета - поменять Большой или Мариинский на другой выше сил. Никакое КГБ не посмело бы остановить Максимову и Васильева, если бы они решили уйти. Ушли и все. Может быть рухнул замертво агент КГБ Григорович, но кто он?

Maybe MrNocco thinks that Vladimir Vasiliev is father of dancer Ivan Vasiliev because he also dances with Bolshoi. But he isn't his son, of course.
