“Sarpatatwam or The Serpent Wisdom” by Mohiniyattam artiste Methil Devika is a dancer’s portrayal of serpent allure and is the first-ever Indian Classical dance short-doc to have been voted into the contention list of the Oscar Academy Award, 2019 The serpent has long held the fascination of numerous cultures which imbues it with God-like qualities. The serpent is both feared and worshipped in not only Indian culture but across civilisations be it Greek, Egyptian or Chinese. Through Mohiniyattom, an Indian classical dance form dating back to 17th century, the dancer interprets the serpent’s moves as it coils, unfurls and glides through mysterious spaces. We are transported to another time, where there’s nothing left but the primordial. The archival film is an attempt to preserve Indian philosophy and mysticism through traditional performance and its associated esoteric and representative symbols. The documentary is unique in real-time performance-filming as it remains true to the artiste’s internalizing of the content, her dissemination through movement, trance and verbal conversation.

Its a wonderful study of sarpa representing
Very much similarities with human being and snakes.....
    Thank you madan

Mohiniattam is a very graceful dance form. But this is beyond graceful. It's so spiritual. It's so obvious and meaningful which is presented gracefully. She connected herself to the finest emotional and characteristic string of the creature and hence it was so easy for her to become one while performing. This is so unique and as she said it was worth documenting it

Oh my God...this is mind blowing. I have no formal knowledge of mohiniyattam or any art form, but from the point of view of a common audience, this is amazing. Those lines 'Kannai sevi aake kondu...' what a transformation is that! I watched this and showed to two more people, all of three of us were startled at that point. Later, in your interview you speak about the same, so that was nice! Hypnotic, graceful, trance in motion. Loved the music, instrumentals, direction, lighting and every shot. Hats off to the entire team.

@Asocio Analyst - You may call it religion or not according to your sensibilities. But what she has portrayed is the well-documented and widely followed path of Kula-Kundalini yoga/tantra in the Indian traditions. She displays in the dance the yogic system of awakening the Kundalini (serpent power) residing in the mooladhara chakra and guiding it step by step to the Sahasrara. The references to using 'ears as eyes' alludes to the yogic method of turning your eyes inward by closing it to the world. Pambatti Siddhar (author of the song) himself was a well-known Siddha in the Shaivite tradition. The 'serpent kalam' drawn on the floor and the final act of erasing it are all widely practised elaborate rituals in many naga temples across Kerala.

You're unique in your way of taking up our cultural aspects through dance forms. Mohiniyattam is such a devotional, spiritual form of art and you could convey the concept so deeply through this.Your perseverance, patience and connection to light up the concept is remarkable..Salute you Ms. Devika..

Totally amazing. Fearlessness with which you were walking in the forest barefooted.
    Dance made me speechless.
And after the interview I had to go back and watch the dance again.
Ignorance is dark and the knowledge is darker.
My God I have to ponder.
    Bless you.

Spellbound performance. The way you recreate the concept through this art is awesome. The second half of the performance where you transform into the concept with that specifications of sarpa drishti and later the awakening of the chakras and the Kundalini power has really struck me.

Title is an apt one ..
a new wisdom for me about our philosophical views.
Shiva Prabhakara siddhar was really a mystic.. Omallor,Pathanamthitta his temple is there..
Wiping section at the climax of the dance was super ..

Dearest Devika🙏. My most humble pranaams to you. Watching Sarpatatwam and your intent behind triggering the thought process of the SNAKE and it's wisdom that's connected civilizations across eons of time - through a meditative art form of Mohiniyattam was both surreal & ethereal. Bringing yet another gem of a point "ignorance is dark but knowledge is darker" - a statement so profound that it has got me thinking instantly that knowledge is a thirst only a true seeker can quench, temporarily, for it is a deep abyss that has no end!
Thank you for reigniting my thought to look inwards and allow shedding of everything that wears us down temporarily, to rejuvenate, reenergize and rise, just like the Snake🙏.

The sensitive bhaavaka is raised from his/her finite frame to the impersonal dynamic flow. The visual initial to the actual rendering to the ritual stage of immaculate and consummate performace leaves the sahrdaya speechless but to be in the same rising spanda. The extraordinary performance is quite successful in taking spectators to a selfless uncoiling. I need to watch the pure act again and again. No words can successfully say anything about the transformative experience. Just speachless.
