  • PREVIEW OF THE DVD item D--119
    Full length is 1hr. 43min. see www.cspmovies.com
Great material from 19 sources shot in many locations out west. See FM and ALCO and many rare SP units.
This brings the 1942 to 1975 era on the SP with E, F units and early GP9 and SD9 power. Don't miss out on the first U- boats. These GE locomotives had some problems. But GE eventually worked their way to the top of the locomotive business by pecking away at EMD.
See the greater San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles environs, Glendale's old Taylor Yard, Colton Crossing, and many extinct branchlines. See the opening of the new Colton Yard and the building and early days of the Cajon Pass line for the SP and its bypass of Los Angeles for north-south through-traffic.
Passenger and freight trains abound. Special Shasta, Cascade and even Kaiser ore trains from Iron Mountain near the Salton Sea - plus great and extensive Cajon Pass and Tehachapi action and much more.
This is a wealth of vintage SP material -- all shot on vintage movie film by former SP employees and many, very savvy railfans.
To quote Railfan & Railroad magazine, "....the quality and depth of the information in the narration is so great. A must for SP fans I would think, as well as students of motive power evolution, use and disposition."

My maternal great-grandmother worked for the SP as a telegrapher in the first half of the twentieth century. I wish I could've known her. From what my mom says, she had many great stories of working on the SP. She just loved it.

That's cool your father work at Taylor Yard, i always remember watching that huge SP yard everytime we go to the L.A. Zoo which you can see the entire yard. Sad that it's all gone now.. If it weren't for the I.C.C. ruling turning down the attempted merger with Santa Fe, it would still be around today but they had to turn it down and allow Union Pacific to swallow up the SP.

@@1979cl1 SP screw ups by management sealed SP's fate. The ICC decision had nothing to do with it.

I worked many years for Southern Pacific and the Northwestern Pacific RR’s. I first started out as student brakeman, then got promoted to brakeman. I then got an opportunity to go into engine service and became a fireman. I worked as a hostler (inside and outside hostler and passenger service). I then went thru their engineer program working on helper units in helper service and I went thru the Engine Service Training Center at Cerritos, Ca. Completed all my required trips, passed all my exams. Both oral and written and became a locomotive engineer. I tell you what I loved it and still do. I’ve worked for several major RR’s. I grew up as a little kid next to a railroad yard and this was always my dream. I fulfilled it. I just felt like telling someone. If you work for it, you can attain your goals. Work toward your goals. 👍❤️

There was also a Southern Pacific freight train in "Homeward Bound" from 1993; I believe it was pulled by an EMD SD-type diesel.

If I had millions of dollars I would rebuild the cab forward locomotive in the Sacramento railroad museum and put her back in action

I wish the SP still operated tge SD AE railroad, i sasly never got to see them street run here in my city, and in the 2000s a former mayor decided to cut up the former track, and distance the cities economy from industry, and focus more on tourism. What a shame, the Amtrak Turboliners were built here up the street from my house too, SP picked them up from the factory

In the Christmas Movie 'Holiday Inn' there is a scene of an SP F7 Black Widow pulling a passenger consist.
Even though Holiday Inn , the movie, was centered in the state of Vermont.
    Go figure.

At time 2:02, that is engineer Sam Zachery, San Joaquin Div. He had a October 1, 1925 hire date, and promoted to engineer August 30, 1941. He was still on the Jan. 1, 1972 engineer's roster. I can't recall when he retired.

@@charlessmileyvideos Thanks for your kind reply. I grew up at the train station in Lancaster, I used to know almost all the LA_BKF engineers. They were friends and mentors. The RFE in Bakersfield knew this and for spite would not hire me for engine service in 1969 after HS graduation. After the Navy, I got a student engineers job with PC in NJ instead.

I was actually talking about the scene as 0:52, but I see that it's actually 4446, and earlier GS-4.
