That was incredible how you went from flat to the contours. I thought the hammer stikes would make it look unfinished, but it had a totally natural texture when you finished! That was Awsome!!!

I just wanted to thank you however, for pointing me in the right direction! EXCELSIOR!

First one of these I’ve watched and really impressed especially with the variety of tools used that wouldn’t be obvious, like an exhaust and what looked like a pushrod. Brilliant to watch , well done.
It's also not as expensive as you might think, particularly if you plan on making a hobby out of this. The tools are a little bit of an up-front investment, but they'll last for a very long time and have other uses. The metal itself is quite cheap. Apart from that, I've learned from my own experience making mock-up boffer lightsabers that making something that looks good isn't so much about talent or skill so much as trial-and-error and patience.
Bro, this is ridiculous. Amazing craftsmanship. You keep talking like "oh this part I'm just using a socket to create this handcrafted Bugatti of a face-plate" lol. I love it bro.
Awesome looking helmet. If I ever make one I think I might use a different metal for the face plate. Like copper or brass for a different metal color. Beautiful job making that!
Aaannnddd you just got another subscriber. I started blacksmithing about a year ago and love videos like this and all with simple tools. Excellent work!
Fantastic looking piece of armour. My preference would be to add incisors to the edge of the face plate, not long ones but noticable. JMO Love your videos though great craftsmanship on display
Most badass helmet design Ive ever come across...and its a simple design...functional too...if there was an apocalypse, I would want to walk around with this...well done!
Imagine armies marching out or ambushing through fog or a forest with these on and ragged looking chainmail on who the fuck wouldn't be scared at this era?
I can imagine them running into an army with MY attempt at this design also, actually that would be equally effective but instead of them being scared to death they all started laughing to death :) But I had fun trying anyway and that was worth a lot too, I don't feel the need to have something to show afterwards, the process in itself was reward enough for me! And next time perhaps will be better. Damn, I lack that piece of artist in me unfortunatly. I have to focus on armour that is without those extra artistic pieces, although all armouring need some artistic skill there are those that need more than others!
I find myself in some strange places on RUclips and this is one of them (in a good sense tho), but I'm a stickler for skills and appreciate solid craftsmanship and this is an envious display of skill and craftsmanship.. Epic work!! Gonna watch a lot more of your content!
Damn son, that's pretty brutal . I just wanted to thank you for giving me the final push into wanting to make armour. I'm looking into joining some reenactors and maybe making armour for heavy combat.
+David Guyton Awesome tutorial! 2 short questions: - Which type of steel are you using? Is it rustproof? - And what to use as rivets? Everything I tried so far just bent...
This is regular sheet steel you can get from Lowes, Home Depot, etc. It's not stainless and will rust if you leave it outdoors. For rivets you can use any kind of metal rid cut to length. I sometimes just use nails. In this case, it's 1/4" copper rod. It just takes some time getting used to how rivets work. If they are always bending, you probably are cutting them too long. Try them a little shorter and see how they do.
im not an armorer, or metal smith but i am a apprentice leather crafter and because of this video i have an idea now on what i want to try out of leather for a helmet ty for this video
I just discovered your channel, this is exactly what I've been looking for. Making my way thru the rest of your vids. I will be trying the gauntlet and mask soon. 🤘🤘
I've recently started watching videos like this and I think yours is the best one because of the way you explain what you're doing. It's not too much and it's not too little. Keep up the great work!
Thanks Michael! That's exactly what I am going for. I want to keep it accessible to beginners, and still keep it interesting for the people who actually do this stuff.
@@cookieDaXapper I made a metal welding hood 15+ years ago.. Thin gauge aluminium shell w/ auto-darkening internals. It was killer. So killer, that someone couldn't resist stealing it. *sigh* No issues w/ slag/spatter or it heating up - It was TIG welded, & only used for TIG & grinding.

I've had the idea to make Dj Skully's Steampunk mask for a while as a protective shop mask, but it's really intimidating when you've never worked with sheet metal. You've given me a fair bit more confidence to start trying now!
I made this mask and a matching lower jaw peice for my samurai kabuto and your tutorial was a FANTASTIC guide. I freehanded the shape and it still worked out well.
Freaking bad-ass! If I made a helmet like this I'd make a chin strap that looks like the lower jaw, maybe held on with elastic connectors or something so that it moves with my jaw. I'd maybe add fangs too for good measure.
i always improvise but i dont have any of the metal... i dont want to purchase it over the internet and i have not a single shop in my region that sells it ;__;
I believe he is encouraging DIY which is why he sells the templates rather than the pieces. As a metal worker myself I thoroughly respect and encourage folks to make their own, its highly self rewarding.
Interesting DIY metalwork... Is this just an art piece, or do you intend to pad and put straps on this to make it practical? I know that's taking things out to an extreme, but I love to see modern techniques and materials used to make things that might actually match up to historical wargear.
It's more of a show piece. I don't do any sort of heat treatment (keeping it simple for fans of the channel to give it a shot) and I have no reason to ever wear or use it other than in the video
