I've literally just finished reading the Helm's Deep chapter of The Two Towers today, this video has honestly made my day even better 😂
People: Cav is just bad bro...
Rohan: Hahah horse goes vrooooooooooooooooom
Dude you're becoming my favourite lord of the rings content provider you should be 500k subscribers At least what a hidden gem great video
Well done! I'd love to see more videos like these on the military structures of other kingdoms.
What would be Rohan's total population required to support that many troops?
I would say around 200.000-500.000 people
Rohan had 12000 soldiers and Gondor has less than 20000 soldiers during the war of the ring.
My rule of thumb is that you will never see more than one percent of a medieval society without risk of societal collapse.
Rome by contrast was able to raise and maintain multiple percentages without a breakdown because of her centralized nature.
Man, I love your videos, they're so different and detailed.
I think you should explain the structure for Gondor's army and defense as well, I've heard they are very different from the movies.
Great example of learning from your mistakes.
Interesting video
I rarely click on videos as fast as when I see a new one from you
Me too. I usually wait to watch videos, but for this channel, I watch immediately
I have to say i've always loved the style Rohan has.
I would call them a semi-porfessional army, they are well trained and well equiped but aren't full time and i think thats a wise idea they didn't have the population size of Gondor so they couldn't really keep a professional army on the size of Gondor, but to make up for that they had a very mobile force that can react quickly.
Also you can certainly see the Anglo-Saxon/Viking aspects of Rohan, the kings bodyguard being the only professional force is like the Housecarl's and rest of Rohans army is very close the Anglo-Saxon Fyrd as is their main foot tactic of Sheildwalls.
The only thing that s not quite Anglo-Saxon is the heavy reliance on cavalry, light or medium cavalry, that seems more something borrowed from the Normans.
Tolkien did say that the men of the Bayeux Tapestry would probably be a good stand-in for the Rohirrim, so the Norman influence there was probably as intentional as the Norse and Anglo-Saxon
happy new year thanks for the video, i resubbed to lotro because of your channel :)
I'm always interested in reading more about Rohan! They're probably my favourite human people in the Legendarium

I am a non-entity, thus I don't know how to write and read
Can you do a video on gondors military structure
Definitely.
It would be really interessting to know what you think ist the estimated Number of Warriors Gondolin could muster at the Fall of Gondolin
30-50k High Elves
@@lanarwensalmo3415 really that much ist 50k as big as the eastern army from the battle of unumbered tears?
@@mrnord4096 Well, Turgon did brought 10K strong to the Nirnaeth Arnoediad uncalled(Voluntarily), he won't left his kingdom defenseless like what king Theoden did during their march to Minas Tirith.
@@lanarwensalmo3415 King Theoden Rode with 6000 of the possible 12000 to what is would call defensless
@@lanarwensalmo3415 ok Gondolin hat their strengh Shortly before their Fall but it was still a Single City more than 30 thousand at its highest point is the maximum number i would give them
