When you want to buy a rose bush (but this goes for all other plants in the garden), don't let yourself be moved by the single photo that presents its flower like a jewel in a case. Because most of the time, this beautiful flower that you admired so much will make you regret the poor general decorative effect of the plant that bears it.

Good morning Patrick & Stuart, the fountain will be such an asset to your chateau, and perfect for the courtyard. Tony did a excellent work re the foundation of the fountain. The roses you were inspecting are just so beautiful. What is a garden without some roses, standard or climbers. The dolls are exquisite! Such beautiful handwork, some people are so talented. If they are not on show, I would place them inside a glass dome where they will be safe from dust etc. It all has come together very nicely, all the hard work, and now it's just for an extra here and there. Do enjoy your guests, I am sure they are having a wonderful time. Do take care, until next we see you. Kind regards, Elize.

Love the camera angle for your intro in the petite salon. The reflection of the opposing mirrors was fascinating.
I love roses, too, but they have thorns. I prefer to fill spaces with other kinds of flowering trees and shrubs, like azaleas, rhododendrons, hydrangea , crepe myrtle, etc. The trick is to figure when they bloom, so you always have something in bloom throughout the warmer months. Loved the tour of the flower market.

Those roses will be a beautiful addition that will live for many years if well tended. If you want to add a rose with a special scent add Rosa rubiginosa. The flowers are not much to look at, they grow almost wild in a hedge, but the scent of the leaves is fantastic. It's amazing how much cement it takes to fill in the foundation of that fountain. It was interesting seeing the plant fair you went to. That striped rose (Scentimental) was developed by a friend of mine in California. I've grown over 1,000 different varieties of roses myself, in all kinds of climates, including several hundred of the old-fashioned ones (some dating to roman times). Many of them do bloom repeatedly through the year, and many also have those amazing fragrances. I actually don't mind the non-repeating roses, and think of them like one would lilacs, etc., plus they make nicer landscape plants (not so stiff and ungainly). France was THE major breeder of roses during the 19th century, and many are still great today, there are still major rose breeders in France today (friends with a few of them myself). I personally love their names, sounds so much better than newer ones often have like "lipstick", "Purple pavement" and the like (yes, real names of roses! LOL). I think your fountain is going to be spectacular, I can hardly wait to see it.

    • @patrickjourneytothechateau9452
      @patrickjourneytothechateau9452 5 месяцев назад +1

hat “ little” hole needed 3 cubic yards of cement. We did the math for the costs….. the only difference was delivery, so we decided not to shovel and be at it for a whole day 😮🤔🤣 I used many David Austin roses in Germany, but also very old ones. Love them. I agree with you as for repeat blooming varieties. In our park and hedges, that’s great. In the courtyard and flower bed, I do want the repeat varieties. Compte de Chambord might be in the 4 beds we are planing around the fountain. Very impressed by your expertise and knowledge. 👍🏻🌹🤩. The. French loved lilacs and in the 19th century had over 400 varieties. We will start to look when we have less renovations to do.
Hugs from Colombe my friend ❤❤❤

    • @RonRobertson-lafrance

@@patrickjourneytothechateau9452 Comte de Chambord is one of the best of roses! That whole family of Damask Perpetuals are about my favourites. If you can find it, one that was fantastic for me in several climates was Duchesse de Rohan. I do like the David Austin roses, too. Yes, I was thinking hedges and such for the once bloomers, they're such a pleasure to see when they do their thing. I didn't realise they'd had so many kinds of lilacs, they do wonderfully here and everywhere I've been in France. There are even a few that repeat almost all summer now. You definitely did the smart thing having the cement delivered, after all that time spent mixing cement is worth two plastered walls! LOL Hugs to you guys, your vision is coming to fruition everywhere there, all the work you've done looks great!

Congratulations on all the views! 🙌 I was thinking about the rainy weather when I was the theme of today's vlog, pouring concrete and digging etc is not great if it's raining cats and dogs. Omg the roses! Such beautiful varieties, wow. I love rambling ans climbing roses, and those ones with the very full centers, centrifolia style (they smell so marvelous too), they're like something from old Dutch master paintings. 😍
But nothing beats a scuffy pupp in your lap! 🥰
I'm inspired by all the jeweltones of the blooms now. We're having very grey and cold weather for may, so thanks for that!
    ❤️🙏🐾🐾

I am so happy for you guys, seeing the fountain emerging, what a difference that will make to the entrance of your gorgeous Chateau! I am so relieved that the puppies gave the approval as they sauntered by. I am jealous of your brocantes and markets! What a perfect place to live and be surrounded with such beauty! The roses you purchased...wow!!! I can only imagine the perfume! I love it when you digress Patrick. I do that as well, but we're so full of knowledge, how can we fine tune it all? It's impossible! Love the dolls and of course Amber wanting to noticed....so loving. CONGRATULATIONS on reaching 5 million views!!!! You sure do deserve that!!!!

Love all the plans, the fete de plant, and the hard-working friend. I have a Ghislaine de Gironde climbing rose and she is stunning. Just now her roses are opening and the last will be in November. She got thousands of roses, literally overwhelming in scent. One of my terraces is underneath it. Pity ramblers roses are short-blooming, eh. The ones you bought are beautiful. Don't worry, a garden grows organically. In time it will be stunning. And gosh, did it rain!

We finally had a sunny day yesterday after constant rain.I actually got out in my garden and did some digging. 🤗Its daffodil time here in Vermont,. 🌾🌾🌾I transplanted some clumps of forget-me-nots into a window box. They have their flower buds and will burst open next sunny day, if there ever is one...raining hard again today. 😮I dont have a fountain but I have a birdbath with one of those solar thingies spirting in the center...the hummingbirds will love that...they're due to arrive in the next few days🐦🐦🐦🐦no hummingbird emoji...😂 Hugs from a dedicated chateau hopper ❤❤

Congratulations on your milestone! When Stuart first announced the milestone, my brain heard "mouse dome". The picture that came to mind was rather preposterous, but soon realized the word was, indeed, "milestone". Again congrats!!!

Love the roses! some of my favorites climbers are Sombreuil (good fragrance and repeats well) and Altissimo (no fragrance, but the color and the size are outstanding). It is wonderful to be able to pick out your favorites and enjoy them. Have fun.

Regarding the rose from the 1600s. I was gifted a book years ago with aquarelles by Anne-Marie Treschlin. The plates are absolutely detailed and in color. The title is The Language of Roses from the Gallery Plate from the W.H. Smith Publishers Inc. copyright 1986 to Arnoldo Mondadori Editore SéP. A. Milan Author Stelvio Coggiatti. Printed in Italy, translated in New York, N.Y. Apart from describing each of the old roses, at the back of the hardcover book it has the Family Tree of roses. The oldest rose described is Rosa damasena semperflorens - dating back to Roman times. The book has been indispensable to me as I have helped countless clients (when I worked) find the perfect rose for their yard, home, house, apartment, business, etc. You 2 are fortunate as you live in a climate that allows you to grow the modern, fragrant, tea roses and climbing roses.
I'm glad you took a multi-petaled clematis. I have one of those but here in Central Canada, these only last a few years before they die out. They're beautiful while they last! Wishing you the best with the fountain!

Please do a bio-filter on the fountain, which will prevent the green water. The pump has to be outside the fountain or have an access to clean the bio-filter, but believe me it is wonderful and save you a lot of draining, cleaning and refilling of the fountain.

I loved the plant sale! I went to school for horticulture, so I go crazy over plants. Loved seeing the fruit trees and clematis. I was searching for a pink rose I fell in love with while in France back in 2019. My husband found it bought it as a gift for me this spring. I can't wait for it to bloom. Nothing is better than the old roses that smell wonderful. I am looking forward to your future plans for the gardens!😊

@patrickjourneytothechateau9452 Hi😊 We weren't totally sure what rose it was. It was growing up someone's house in Chinon. But we think it was the queen of denmark rose. Beautiful and beautiful smell. But only blooms once a year, I think. I will have to get the one you suggested if I can find it.

@patrickjourneytothechateau9452 Sorry to bother you again, but I just looked up Comte de Chambord, and I think that is the rose I saw and loved!!! It looks just like it. Thanks so much! I have been wondering for years what it was and tried to get something as close to it as I could.

@@beaniecat1980 I’m glad. That rose is from the 17th century…. We are thinking to putting 4 of them into the four beds around the fountain. Well, that will be next year 😂🤔🥰. And it is not a both at all ♥️❤️♥️

Beautiful dolls. They remind me of puppets from European animation films. 👍 A friend of mine with a beautiful yard taught me something that has been a great insight. Pick a plot of flat land away from the yard(s) and allocate it as the rescue nursery. Then plant anything you cannot resist buying, something you see by the side of the road, and plants that are cheap as they are dying or cheap at the end of the season, and just let them grow while you plan the garden design. I’ve had amazing yards as a result of this 😃
