Very helpful video for those starting out, but I don’t think follow focus, matte box, and ND filters are something an AC is bringing to set-or a monitor. As a DP, I am bringing those as a part of the camera setup but the AC should be familiar with how to operate all of the equipment.
stuck up ACs or DPs are always the reason why I choose to be assertive and kind so we are strong team on set. You don't earn anything by being condescending to new comers who will confuse roles, so just chill and teach.
This is actually informative yet creative! It's a good 5min journey with you! And man, just keep doing whatever you love! There's a huge amount of toxic internet user and I hope you only absorb those pinch of goods. Keep creating! Good vibes only!
Never use a metal tape measure when measuring the distance to an actor's face, it can be dangerous around the eyes. Always use a fiberglas tape in those situations.
The first thing should be the the follow focus, then the tape measure.. the monitor 1st? I doubt it!! a good 1AC knows how to pull focus without looking at a monitor....just by taking marks! Now with all this new technology you can use a monitor to enforce your work..but chances are to get late to your focus marks if you are looking always to the monitor.
@@luisferrusco5539 no. Are you shooting with paper cameras? I regularly work on set with $90k camera build outs, & DP / AC / director are regularly next to it while drinking coffee. If your $3k or less DSLR can't handle getting splashed worse case scenario then you have a horrible camera. Having camera on the floor with drinks above is a total no no, but everyone on set is drinking coffee. Never a problem. ESPECIALLY the scene you referenced. Just don't be an idiot throwing it in the air. Same thing in someones car. Just general common sense.
1st AC's can be women too like myself and I was going to let it slide because I assumed the video was really old but I was shocked when I saw 2018, c'mon.
Lol. You are talking about a 2nd ACs job.. the 1st ac is the focus puller, you dont slate.. ehat youre doing saying is very unprofessional. Its ok maybe in a college film..
"The 1st AC" can also be a woman. You managed to squeeze 34 He/Him's into a 5 min video. I often turn up to set and am not the only woman in the camera dept. but sometimes even the whole crew! The way some guys look at me as if I was an alien who just picked up their Alexa, is frankly juvenile. Would you believe it...my vagina and I figured out how cameras work...OMG! You were describing what a fictional AC might take on a general job so use "they" or "you". Anyone reasonably intelligent should be able to proofread the script and make those tiny adjustments.
Yup, the actor was male - good answer to a stupid gripe. You think that when you walk in, the world stops to wrap their heads around a woman showing up to do the job? That's largely narcissistic and entirely in your head. Believe me...no one thinks about you that much, if at all. Get over yourself.
Honestly I’ve watched 4 videos on 1st AC tips and tricks and did notice that they all say he/him, but all the ACs I’ve ever worked with have also been male. I can get your frustration somewhat, but I am genuinely curious; would you have said something if it was a female and they only used she/her?
Ahh, RUclips, the place where you have thousands if not millions of content creators to choose who to watch, but people always complain and want some specific channel to be different. Im an 1AC always looking to improve.. But I found it misleading... If you go on a set like this... You might make the wrong impression and not get called back. That's my point. An actor should never grab your measuring tape.. you shouldn't bother them. (maybe use a laser). The slate looks better with color coded tapes. (Some info will stay there the rest of the shoot anyway) The spray on the lens killed me tho.. I yelled!! NOO!!! And getting the numbers of the ladies?? really? Might as well start taking selfies on the job.... For the rest, I guess there are some useful tips for biginners. I guess I was kinda harsh.. but you could always do more research.
Spray the lens cloth, NOT the lens!
Noted, thank you! :)

I used my multitool to throw at people more times than I can remember, really accurate video !
What's the bag you used in the last shot ?
Thomas Wielgus ..it‘s a Cinebag, pretty good, i like the pouches inside..
Here is the link for the bag! Very handy to have!

Does it really matter if the 1st AC brings a clapperboard? Some people like to bring their own in case they want to slate the camera themselves
Not really, every set varies so everyone is right!

Language mistake I made myself: flash light not torch. Torch is with real fire. ;)
In the UK torch is used for flash lights.

Is a "Torch" film lingo? Or dialect. Like I know it as a flashlight.
"Torch" is the commonly used term here in the UK...

NOOOOO ! 1Ac never brings a Clapper Board ... 2nd always as it states in his job title Clapper Loader ... :) hahahh
Hi Viola, it really depends on the size on the production! :)

Hello there! What a 1st and a 2nd AC is doing depends from the size of the production. I never said that the 1st AC is a clapper as well! :)
you are really fixated the AC is a male arn't you? "his tool bag" "his monitor" this isnt a biopic on one person its a job description.
Hey there, I only mention that he's a male because our actor was male!

Good video but focusing this on He and Him is a bit rough. Might want to be inclusive to the wonderful ACs and other crew that don't identity as male.
