While you may say "that means that they're acknowledging they're cartoons" that's quite a stretch (ha! puns!) of the meaning of the phrase. They hardly need to know that they're cartoons in order for them to know that their physics allows for certain actions. These are their physics, not ours, and they just do what they can within those constraints just as we do.
