- Saviourgate by Russell Kirk is a Christmas ghost story whereby a man stumbles into an English pub on a snowy Christmas Eve. In the convivial atmosphere he meets people he recognises though he doesn't remember being there before and he is given one more chance.

I quite liked that Findley had the opportunity to reconsider his free will choice. Good story. ❤
One of the greatest seasonal joys is a warm cuppa and a well-told ghost story. Thanks for sharing this gem! It's certainly brightened the day and gave much food for thought.
Could not agree more!
@@TGVScribe Happy to be in such like-minded company! Just enjoying Between The Lights now. :)
I've been taking mine with some eggnog & rum!
A story of hope. Was not Finley given a chance of grace? After a glimpse of the after life he changed his mind as regards to ending his life. This place existed in a time of it's own And one good act can bring any one redemption. Time stands still while he was in the hotel. The encounter uplifted his spirit and give him the courage to carry one as now he is aware of what's waiting for him . The setting of the story brought warmth and a feeling of camaraderie not only to Finley but the listeners also. Hope there is a warm bed waiting for us at the end.
Enjoyed that. Different floors, and rooms in the mansion. Music and madness. Different world, same planet🦻
I looked up Russell Kirk out of curiosity and was amazed to find that he passed away in Mecosta, MI which is about 20 miles from where I live. It's quite out in the country. Never heard of him so may try to find more of his stories. Thanks, Tony. Good story.
Michigan, USA?
@@susanmercurio1060 Yes!
He is somewhat of Mecosta’s favourite son. An amazing individual. I just found out about his low key stellar life and work in the mid last century. I was introduced to him last year via the Gilbert Keith Chesterton Society, a band of “jongleurs de Dieu” very worth looking into knowing.
I have to listen to your readings during the day - otherwise I get too spooked 😳. I got goosebumps on my elbows at the end of this one!
That made me laugh. What is it makes me do this to people? I will speak to my analyst
I was waiting for you to say Russell Kirk was the child of a pastor. That has become a running gag among my clergy friends since you pointed out how frequently that happens.
And of course I enjoy any ghost tale that brings Augustine into the storyline.
Wonderfully done. I urge you to do some other of Kirk's great stories, especially Watchers at the Strait Gate.
I have done behind The Stumps. Trouble is there are so many writers out there and only one life to narrate them in!
That was a pleasant tale. Especially appropriate tonight as I await for word of the passing of an elderly relative.
Sorry to hear that
Tremendous! That was really great. You had me the entire way. And to end with that single name amid all the remnants of buildings, reaching up to heaven, "Saviourgate." Wow. Wonderfully deft in both delivery and import. Gratias, Mr. Walker.
Thank you Mary.
Thank you for this lovely story.
I really liked this one.
Lovely!! Really enjoyed this one.
Glad you enjoyed it!
So excited❣️Perfect blessing after a ten hour shift🥰 Thank you❣️👻❣️
Oh my God that was PERFECT! Chef's kiss 😙
Another wonderful offering! Thank you. Crying out to be a Christmas ghost story dramatised. 👻
Yep, interesting that it hasn't been. It would be easy to do too. Just a pub lounge, big fire, old building, three or four actors.
@@ClassicGhost would be great to cast it!
🛤️🛤️🛤️ 🚉 thank you dear Tony.
Bravo-well done on this one.
Wonderful story thank you
Beautiful, uplifting tale, presentation and commentary. Lots to consider, wonder, from where do stories come? Thank you!
C S Lewis would have loved this :) It reminds me of his story 'The Great Divorce'
Great choice! I just heard your story though & I preferred it!
Im glad
Loved this one!
When I first read the title I read it as one word & thought "How do I pronounce that?" I thought it was a foreign word. Then you said it & I realized it is two words. HA! 🤭 Never heard of this story before THX *Tony* 👍👍👍👍👍
Wow, a psychiatric nurse - I forgot how smart you are! Thanks for another great story and synopsis! Always an extra treat just in case you didn't figure out all the little nuances! Thanks Braz!
+sugarfalls1 you know I don’t figure them all out either. True.
@@ClassicGhost lol Oh, let a girl dream a little!
Interesting take on things, certainly ~ ~ the after life view a bit too limited for my way of thinking, but hey! makes a great story! thank you
Enjoyed this one on a night drive. Also, listening to your narration of A Christmas Carol, and it's the best I've heard by far. Your interpretation seems darker and more realistic than others. 👍🏽
I just finished A Christmas Carol, and enjoyed it thoroughly!
Oh. I am very flattered by that. I think Dickens intended it to be scary as well as heartwarming
@@ClassicGhost yes, it was originally written as a ghost story; not the quintessential Victorian feel good family classic, lol.
I agree. Heard *so* many versions - but Tony's really made me know why I enjoyed it to begin with. An exceptional piece of work.
You know, I've never heard of this story before; it's great though. Very clever concept. ( I would stay myself and forget the train)
The photo is beautiful.
Yes, sadly I didn't take it. But I agree.
Enjoyed this
What a great story. I'm writing a version of the after life journey myself ☺️
I would love to read it when it's finished ☺
i LOVE THIS!! 🥰
It’ll be even better at Christmas
I love the opening ! Quite spooky!
Yet another ,för my ears at least, pleasant story för the season !
Although , coming from a country which doesn't have a tradition of "Christmas Ghost Stories" I treat myself to your stories which I otherwise follow all yrar round !
So thanks again för a great narration and as I don't always have the possibility to comment I send you here my sincere hope that you have an excellent 🎄🍽🍷Christmas 🍻❄⛄
Best regards , ¥S Scribe.
Thanks for listening. You too have a cool Yule.
Thank you Tony ! I didn't remember commenting on this "Mikelmass" (not sure I'm spelling it right ) story !
But now that I heard it again and saw your ever present reaction to comments and the fact that I did comment it before ! I just wanted to point out that as you probably know "Christmas" is actually called Jul in both the Swedish ,Danish and Norwegian language to this day and you are often well known for being a "connaisseur" of dialekts !
I found it interesting to remark that this word has mixed origins .
Wish you all the best and please do keep us entertained ! Especially when I heard you point out that you were rated nr 6 in some poll and I för one resent that because for me you are one of the two best channels on the same subject !
Thank you 🥰 lovely warm story of what may be.
Absolutely wonderful!
I got much I from this most unusual tale but did get lost too, I need to do a replay- I am not familiar with its author but am keen to hear or read more. So original- and the questions anybody seeking a more spiritual path are there to ponder. No spooky ghosts but something far scarier to me- spending eternity with 2 horrible men who abused me- yes, I need another listen- is reincarnation presumed?
Namaste
A lovely vision of the afterlife. I love stories like this. . Winter is always best for ghost stories and meditations on eternity. Thanks!
Awesome pick. Very few recordings of Kirks ghost stories.
Wonderful!!! I'd never heard of this one before and it's terrific. A touch of the old John Buchan, but not too much. And wonderfully read. It made me think of those lovely old Powell and Pressburger movies- "A Matter of Life and Death", "I Know Where I'm Going" etc where the border between this world and another is permeable and invisible.
I actually don’t know that story
It has a bit of humor in it though a dry sort 👍👍👍
+Miji Yoon i do like this story . It was in the folio Ghost stories book-which I sold and which I have been looking for ever since
Beautiful!
Death eliminates possibility, but also removes the burden of choice. "To be or not" will always be a universal part of human contemplation - for some of us perhaps more than others due to chemistry, family history, or [sigh] both. For me, what's missing from this tale is the moment of epiphany for the protagonist (but I may have been distracted at that moment in the reading by my dog). Not just the moment where he decides to catch his train after all, but in which we the reader/listener are convinced he's better off taking that taxi ride rather than just staying over at the inn. Again, my dog may have taken my attention away at that vital moment, so I shall just have to listen again and see if I can catch it. Thank you.
I would have been tempted by the inn
@@ClassicGhost Me, for sure. To be able to relive all good parts of life, avoid people I don't like, and be able to take it easy for a bit... I mean, eternity... Only problem, it seems a bit uni-sex. Would I be stuck with the women, talking women-experience-talk?
@Blue Greenglue
Oh, trust me, friend, you did indeed, miss the moment of epiphany. It came across loud and clear in the protagonist's cumulative and telescoped reckoning, as he drew in the reality of what he'd turned away from in that double-take of 'left behind.' It's then perfectly punctuated by the pronouncement of the street's original name, which falls on this man, and the reader like a hammer--"Saviourgate," the takeaway from which tells him he'd just been ransomed.
Great,thankyou.
This story has nuances of a Korean movie "Hotel Del Luna" where the dead come to rest before they carry on to their journey of the afterlife.
Welcome to the Hotel California
You can never leave
@@ClassicGhost yep - I like this channel for the stories but also the little personal thoughts that you put forward afterwards too
Don't know if I want an eternity of reruns...
Depends whether you liked it first time. I might get bored of a warm cosy pub on a snowy Christmas Eve. But it would take a few times round.
Orthodox? No, but a lovely sweet tale. Beautiful narration. It would have made a great "Twilight Zone".
Interesting concept of life after death. Something to think about.
I just finished your cumbrian ghost stories and it was great but there was a small error in the demon clock where it stops making sense I put in a ticket on Amazon for it.
Ok. I will take a look at that one
Hi Tony do you have twitter? I wanted to add you
