Handwriting Recognition using Google ML Kit

This tutorial is a self-paced exercise on handwriting recognition on Android devices using Digital Ink Recognition in Google ML Kit. The example is from Chapter 5 in AI and Machine Learning for On-Device Development, Laurence Moroney, O’Reilly Press, ISBN 978-1-098-10174-9. Hadwritten text is converted into a sequence of unicode characters that are displayed as text on the device.
The ease of development and deployment on mobile devices (the book includes iOS examples too!) with Google ML Kit should be movitation to assess ML Kit that is being continuously refined. Digital Ink Recognition uses the handwriting stroked on the device. There is a separate API to process text in images.
Currently, the handwriting does not traverse the device since the recognition does not require any network connection. Naturally, the flip side is that language packs have to be downloaded during initialization. Over 300 languages and 25 writing scripts are supported in the current version of ML Kit.

- Does the model API available to implement on the website? or only in mobile?
-Does this model accept only doodle ink? how about handwritten images?

The API is not limited to mobile apps. (I had just embarked on learning Android Studio)
The API accepts handwritten images but my presentation is limited to that illustrated. Slightly different method would have to be invoked.

Hello @@kaiw1619, are you able to "write" on the screen in the magenta colored field? The example, for demonstration purposes, uses the locale "BN" and you will have to set the locale to any other supported (a very comprehensive list) language if you want your handwriting to be interpreted in that language. Perhaps, I am not understanding your question. Please clarify if you wish. Thanks.
