Brianna, thank you! I have a question if you are just going to show the child the first three rods, do we bring the whole 10 rods to the mat? Or just rods 1 through 3? Thank you!
Do you know of any resources or channels that discuss using Montessori strategies with middle school children? I work in a special education setting with mild/moderate students. Some tactile approaches are great, but I'm struggling with applying them to more complex concepts found in a secondary curriculum. These include integers, commutative/distributive properties, exponents, and irrational numbers. Do you think these are beyond the scope of Montessori?
Hey there! Great question. The Montessori approach to teaching goes far beyond Primary Education. My son currently goes to a Montessori that goes through 8th grade! There are a few channels that show what the elementary years looks like in a Montessori Classroom. Montessori Mandi and Community Montessori School both have videos on Elementary Montessori Classrooms.
Thank you for the video Brianna. I have a question, if you will show the child only 3 rods, (one, two and three,) do you bring the whole 10 rods to the mat?
Hello! Thank you for asking! The very first number rod leasson is a sensorial lesson similar to the red rods. You bring them all out and line them up appropriately grading 1 through 10. I will post that lesson as well, so it makes more sense. Once they have explored the material sensorially, you will start associating quantities to each rod in a three period lesson (as shown here.) You start with 1 through 3, then add 5 and six on another day. Then continue on to 8, 9, and 10, on a different day.
This is great! I would love more videos like this using other montessori math materials like sandpaper numbers and coloured beads :)
Thank you! I would love to do this. I will make that my next video for sure.
