Not bc it was scary per se but bc it was based on real crimes committed, Memories of Murder. It is my belief that reality is always scarier than fiction. On a lighter note, I thoroughly enjoy your take on films but most notably Korean especially Burning, a true masterpiece. I wish you all the success you choose to embrace.
I think a big part of a tale of two sisters' scariness is that it keeps escalating, and escalating- and then instead of ending, everything just falls apart at the seams. A family is broken, su-mi's identity is broken. Su-yeon is dead, and Eun-ju may or may not be being targetged by a ghost. I can almost describe it as a train wreck that you can't look away from in a good way, except YOU are on the train.
I noticed how the film focused on Red, green, and brown when I first watched it, I thought it was using the color palette to clue the audience in to what was going on- vibrant colors for when the main character is in the middle of her delusions, and then brown, dull tones for when we return to reality. It's interesting to hear your take on how the symbolism of color goes even further.
@@sadhoneychilli_emilia when soo-min was about to check out the noise from soo-yeon's room, she came across the stepmother and told her to get out of her way in anger, the stepmother told her she 'might regret this moment'. Yeah, it's no illusion. The stepmother is evil after all.
No bro that movie was indeed pretty scary. It builds a lot of tension and anxiety in many moments, has an unsettling atmosphere. And just when you think you understand the whole situation, they show that something was really there all along (the ghost of the protagonist sister actually exists). It reminds me when I was young and tried playing Fatal Frame 3. The first section actually involves you in a nightmare, but what really got me is when you wake up, the entire house is empty, there's no music, no one is there, only you and the subtle sound effects...well, until I saw a feet from a ghost in the bathroom. I shut off my PS2 immediately after that.
Watched this back when I was with a very bad friend group. Like guys that you should not spent your time together. However, I will never forget the sight of 5 criminals covering their eyes with their hands for halve of the movie because they were scared out of their bodies
Do you know about a movie where it’s this scene of this seemingly normal family going about their business in the morning. They’re eating breakfast, talking about there lives. They’re just living. Then they get a knock on the door, and when the dad answers, he immediately gets killed with a shotgun blast. The killer then goes in and kills the mom in the kitchen, with the little girl going and hiding in her room, hearing the chaos outside her door and the older brother doing the same. The killer then goes into the girls room and kills her violently, very violently. She then finds the brother, stares at him for a moment, him cowering in fear, just sits there staring back. She then kills him. The scene is very brutal and I remember watching a video about it but I can’t find it anymore and was wondering if you possible knew about the movie. If so, what is it called and could you possible make a video on it if you haven’t already. This movie is considered to be very brutal and to be shortly draw dropping in the way the directors portray that brutality. Anyway thank you for making all these cool ass videos and thanks to you, I don’t have to actually watch the movie, I can just watch your vids. It’s still creepy and scary as hell but at least I can get through it
This movie is truly a roller coaster of emotions. I was scared, confused, angry.. all of it at the same time. Some scenes had me legit screaming out loud. Great video as usual, I was looking forward to this one!
this is one of my favorite movies. not because it’s incredibly scary for me, but because it is just so uncomfortable and disturbing the entire way through without being incredibly gruesome till way later in the film (at least from my recollection-it’s been a while). i never forgot this film, but i’ve been too anxious to revisit it. it gives me an interesting perspective on hereditary, as I see the deep influences this film has had on a lot of our current fantastic, soon-to-be classic horror pieces. this is true horror, as it is full of dread and truly grounded in reality.
My favorite movie ever. I’ve watched it too many times to count since I first saw it 14 years ago. The acting, the production design, the twist in the middle of the movie, the MUSIC? Nothing will ever top it.
YES! Thank you for doing a video on this film. It's my favorite horror film of all time, it's psychologically interesting, emotional (especially at the end), and has incredibly unsettling horror elements. Such an underrated film.
I didn't find it scary, rather sad. Really sad. Sumi is so broken it honestly made me feel depressed. And the way everything is set up just hurts physically. Her father also, what a strong man, seeing his daughter on that state and trying his best. Man, didn't cry but felt shattered for a couple months. Amazing movie tho. Great plot twists, storytelling, scenery and rendering. Just perfect. For me, its unmached. A unique movie. Made me feel things i didn't even know i could
AH! I always knew there was something special around this movies vibe but it never appeared to me with the colour selection. thanks for pointing those out!
I watched this film as a young child and did not understand it. It was scary (su-yeon's cabinet scene was esp terrifying for me) but the scenes were beautiful and i was hooked. In the end, i remember how, after all the scares, i was left feeling more sad than frightened. I did not understand but i knew the two sisters loved each other very much. Beautiful film; may watch it again. Happy to have stumbled upon your channel; love your videos!
Have to agree with you about A Tale Of Two Sisters leaving you more sad then frightened by the end. It does have a few creepy moments, but i always found it to be more of a tragedy then a horror movie. The reveal as to why the sisters have been experiencing all of these strange occurrences since they came home, is so utterly heartbreaking that the first time you watch the movie it feels like a punch to the gut, & haunts you long after you've watched the movie.
I first saw this movie 12 years ago. I don't even remember if I've seen it again, yet I still remember everything about the film. A movie that holds such a lasting impression has clearly done a lot right. And I generally hate "horror" movies. This movie is one of the movies I think of when it comes to color usage, along with Lady Vengeance (another amazing Korean film) and Sin City.
Spikima, here's something else I noticed that contributes to the overall anxiety the movie gives us. Many key shots were intentionally unbalanced - like the one you showed where Eun-joo/Soo-mi was taking off her lipstick. The left-hand mirror is smaller than the right-hand mirror, is set lower down, and even shows a different view when the father walks into the room. There are other shots where 1/4 or 1/3 of the view is blocked by a wall or door, or where the characters are positioned off-center of the frame. I think this gives viewers a sense that we're missing something important, and that ramps up the anxiety.
I found this film back in 2007/2008 and fell head over heels in love with it. It's so unsettling and sad, but strangely beautiful. It honestly doesn't get the attention it deserves and it was so refreshing to see such a thoughtful essay about it
Watched this movie in Mexico as a little kid. Unfortunately, I did not remember what the name was for the longest time until you uploaded this video. It says a lot about the film that I am able to remember so much haunting imagery years after. Thank you for your work, this video is terrifying.

I have been telling everyone I know since 2003 this movie is a must watch. When I’m asked to name my top films all time this ALWAYS makes the list. Amazing breakdown 🙏🏼
"A Tale of Two Sisters" is definitely one of the most underrated horror movies because it's a movie that is very subtle with how it handles their ghost story. It's personally one of my favorites from korean cinema because to me, I don't see it as a horror movie because a majority of the film feels more like a psychological drama with elements of horror. The ghost story traits and the bright vibrant colors serve as distractions from the real horror underneath; that the grief over losing a sister broke Su-Mi's mind that she can't handle the complexness of reality nor could she move past losing a loved one, so she puts the blame on others, but not herself who should be responsible for not being there to help her sister.
I haven't seen more than half the films you've analyzed but I watch your video analyses regardless because they're deep, thoughtful, and visually entertaining to watch. You're definitely up there on my list of favorite film and art critics like Nerdwriter and I hope you keep making these videos!
YES! one of my fave horror movies of all time! I remember falling in love not only with the story but by the entire mood and presentation of this movie (that scene in the beginning of the movie when the sisters run away to the lake and the camera swings to follow their movements? filled me with so much joy). your video essay just makes me wanna watch it all over again!! (also, i would really love for you to do a video on the whispering corridor series ;; they're my comfort horror movies)
I actually started watching this film a year ago but stopped because it was so damn terrifying. But when I saw that you're gonna make a video on it, then I knew I needed to watch it again from the top lol. And boy was it worth it, the closing scene and the haunting score that goes along with it ties it all up!
This was an amazing review of the movie. You truly make an art-piece out of this review that highlights the important and beautiful parts of the story. Not simply explaining it but tying it to the concept of Mise-en-scene which is a lesser known concept to people that are not as familiar with movies. Thank you for this incredible video!
I just found your channel. Thank you so much for doing a tale of two sisters. This has been my favorite horror film since I first saw it when it released on dvd in America forever ago. This film does not get the recognition it deserves.
This movie absolutely horrified me, then left me feeling incredibly depressed when it was over. Absolutely amazing filmmaking, definitely in my Top 5 horror films of all time.
OMG I just commented on your Kairo scene vid. A tale of two sister for me is the epitome of a psychological horror film. I watched this like 10 years ago, and still is my fave film of its genre. No one tops the twist in the end.
I like how this movie twist made many people forgot that a ghost really exist in this house. Also pretty good video and like always, the video editing matches with the scenes from the movie. Ps : can you review Lake Mungo ? The atmosphere in that movie is still lingering through my head, I recommend at least checking it out.
Once again, fantastic video on an amazing horror film! I'm looking forward to another viewing while keeping an eye out on everything you mentioned in the video.
Ohh, I remember trying to watch this when I was younger, and I didn't finish it because I've never felt so anxious about a horror film before. I'm gonna watch it now, I'll be back for your analysis. Edit: My favorite Korean horror/drama film is "Kim Bok-nam salinsageonui jeonmal" or "Boknam Rises". I still constantly think about that film and how it broke me.
I watched this film when I was 11 back in the 2007 and I was so intrigued by the entire movie. I wish I had this video back then to help me truly understand each little detail of the film. Thank you so much for this.
I actually just watched this for the first time last month! I did a movie binge of 23 movies and had to rank them for a group event. A Tale Of Two Sisters won easily.
Yeah that bedroom nightmare scene is the scariest thing I've ever seen! The visual doesn't even have to be grotesque for it to be horrifying! The atmosphere creates it to be unbearable! The shot of "the ghost" on the bed hovering is a fucking nightmare fuel (that's my Kairo moment istg)! And that's just a portion of horror the movie offers! I still like to think myself someone who doesn't scare easily but damn this movie fucked me up. It's been like 10+ years but this is the movie I haven't been able to revisit!
Me every time I'm about to start watching Spikima videos: Should I watch this and get spoiled or should I leave it for now but get deprived of his awesome essays? Great work as always in picking movies to review, Spikima! You're like a movie recommendation channel, lol.
The cinematography of this movie is so beautiful that despite the horror and overwhelming sadness I experienced watching it, I still wanna live in that house or maybe stay there for a couple of weeks in the summer. 😂
This is my favorite psychological horror movie ever. Actually, I'd probably say it's my favorite movie in general. It really is a masterpiece. I loved it my first time watching, but what really made it so special was that on my second and even third watch I was finding new things to appreciate about the film. The colors, for example, are something I didn't really notice until that third watch and it elevated it even more in my mind because of that attention to detail. The thing that makes this movie so chilling, though, is that people actually live this. That's where the horror comes from for me. As somebody who's lived through trauma, I know what it's liked to get lost in my own head. To imagine a world and see it as reality. And I'm no stranger to regret, which is also prevalent as a theme here, too. You start out trying to make a fantasy where everything is better, but your regret taints it into your own form of torment because subconsciously you think you deserve it. Sorry about the tangent, this movie just really gets to me. Masterpiece may be a word that's overused, but in my opinion it really does fit this film. Thank you for the video!
I also like how this horror film was like a fairy tale. Based on a Korean folk tale it definitely gave off a olde worldly fairy tale vibe. I definitely put it up there with pans labyrinth 💖🌸
I saw this flim when I was 10 it was Sunday afternoon and I watched it with my cousins and sisters I still remember everything and how we watched it with our eyes covered with our hands even it was daylight it's still scary. I'm just glad someone made an analysis about this film.
Ha..., even as native Korean speaker, i had to watch few times to understand what really happened at the end. Depth of twist was somewhat unpredictable, very well made horror movie.
when I watched the tale of two sisters I was so confused but at the same time felt unsettled throughout the whole movie, thanks to your essay I was able to understand this movie better and open my eyes to all these elements. Definitely will keep in mind when watching the movie again
Love the channel! A video about the movie requiem for a dream would be great. There’s a lot of meanings about that film that you could go in depth with, that would be very interesting.
The most scary/unsettling thing for me in this movie is the wallpapers and clours of house nd furniture, narrow alleys in the house. It was making me feel sort of claustrophobic. Any sane person will start to feel weird in this house. It is a great movie but sometimes I felt the scenes were moving very slow for me.
im 35 and ive watched horrors since i was little. I've seen every film in every language that is worth watching near enough and i dont get scared watching them, i just love them. I would honestly say there are about 3 films that have ever made me feel unsettled and genuinely creeped out and this is definitely one of them. Director did a very good job.
you are a terrific film-school teacher! i'd love to see what kind of film you'd make (or film script) you'd come up with, with all this insight. if i'd gone to film school like i should have (or even a course) i would hope that there were educators like you in charge.
I love the piano themes for this movie. I'm not a fan of horror films but this is one of the horror films I loved. I even had my hair cut like Su Yeon 😅 on the side note it's a heartbreaking plot twist
I'm kinda sad that I watched a western movie that copied this when this one had so much thought put in to every detail and scene. I wish I had watched this first 😣 Awesome video! I enjoy your video essays alot especially the horror / thriller themed ones
Subbed! Love this movie, picked it up on dvd in a dollar bin yeeaars ago and it spurred me into Korean cinema! A favorite is The Host, would love to see an essay on that if you havent already! Will find out soon as I binge your content!
Less jump-scarey but more in the territory of revived childhood fears and the uncanny valley: The Conjuring 2 and the fourth season of Stranger Things. The mood in that season reminds me of some nasty nightmares, my younger self had.
Should I be sleeping right now? Yes. Will this video make me stay awake all night? Yes. Do I have regrets? Yes. But supporting Spikima as soon as they post is not one of them 🤍
*MINI SPOILER* - I know this ain't the point of the video, but one of the burning questions that I keep coming back to from watching this film multiple of times - what was it that the aunt really saw in the kitchen? Everything else made sense from the perspective that it was 'all in MC's head', but since the aunt was a third party that visited the house, did they just decide to 'make her see something' to purely suggest there's something supernatural?
I feel like So-Youn ghost and her mother's ghost both are in the house, but Mi-Hee (the aunt) saw So-Youn's because the way her body moved and how she was running out of air was the same as when So-Youn died under the closet + the hair clip "Eun-Ju" picks up later is the same the sister used the day she died
Have you seen Ghost Actress, directed by Hideo Nakata? That movie had me unsettled during the duration of the films running time, and the scene at the end made by blood run cold and I had massive chill bumps break out on my legs.
It is a good film. Problem is, at the moment the first girl leaves the car we knew that there is only one girl. The camera and words in this scene are to specific. And when you know the twist in the first 5 minutes it ruins alot

OMG I just commented on your Kairo scene vid. A tale of two sister for me is the epitome of a psychological horror film. I watched this like 10 years ago, and still is my fave film of its genre. No one tops the twist in the end.
Wow. I need to see this again. I really loved it when I first saw and it is really a rough beautiful ghost story!
One of the greatest film of korean cinematography.
This is the only horror film that left in tears at the end. Poor Su Mi. The end is heartbreaking.
I remember watching bits and pieces of this movie. I forgot most of it, but I remember the colors being so vivid.
Thanks for covering this! This is one of my favorite Korean movies of ALL TIME
Ohh, I remember trying to watch this when I was younger, and I didn't finish it because I've never felt so anxious about a horror film before.
GGAAHH THANK GOODNESS I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO SINCE LIKE FOREVER! THANKS SPIKIMA!
I'm usually good when things are out of context and build up but damn these scenes are still getting to me
Me every time I'm about to start watching Spikima videos: Should I watch this and get spoiled or should I leave it for now but get deprived of his awesome essays?
Great work as always in picking movies to review, Spikima! You're like a movie recommendation channel, lol.
Thats definitely part of the goal! Thx for the luv ❤️
I saw this movie over a decade ago and it has always stuck with me, not many movies do. Really enjoyed your video on it, fantastic work!
One of my favorite movies of all time! A beautiful film; thank you for covering this.
I also like how this horror film was like a fairy tale. Based on a Korean folk tale it definitely gave off a olde worldly fairy tale vibe. I definitely put it up there with pans labyrinth 💖🌸
This is the first Korean film I ever watched it was perfect in all ways. it was beautifully haunting and immensely sad.
The color analysis is just so good. ❤
Spikima movies makes great essays. I always wished people would make more essays on Korean movies like this and not just the popular ones in America.
Love the channel! A video about the movie requiem for a dream would be great. There’s a lot of meanings about that film that you could go in depth with, that would be very interesting.
Can't watch this video essay because this movie is on my to-watch list, but I'm leaving a comment for the algorithm gods
I watch this movie every few years and it still gets me.. it's just so good
Do you have a link? Can´t find it
I like your editing skill
The most scary/unsettling thing for me in this movie is the wallpapers and clours of house nd furniture, narrow alleys in the house. It was making me feel sort of claustrophobic. Any sane person will start to feel weird in this house.
It is a great movie but sometimes I felt the scenes were moving very slow for me.
This was my favorite Korean movie. It was got me into Korean movies altogether
Love this video essay!!!!!! I just finished it and went right down searching for more explain!!! LOVE THIS!
im 35 and ive watched horrors since i was little. I've seen every film in every language that is worth watching near enough and i dont get scared watching them, i just love them.
I would honestly say there are about 3 films that have ever made me feel unsettled and genuinely creeped out and this is definitely one of them. Director did a very good job.
First time watching one of your videos, i love the editing
This is one of my favorite movies! Thank you!
you are a terrific film-school teacher! i'd love to see what kind of film you'd make (or film script) you'd come up with, with all this insight. if i'd gone to film school like i should have (or even a course) i would hope that there were educators like you in charge.
Watched this movie with my bro last month and was scared the entire time. Didn’t really understand much, and not my favorite film. But scary? Yes.
I wish I had watched this first 😣
Awesome video! I enjoy your video essays alot especially the horror / thriller themed ones
@GCP2 shrek
@GCP2 the uninvited (not sure)
The Western remake was absolute garbage. It is barely recognizable.
The western remake made it so trope heavy it felt basic which is really sad when this one is so beautiful
I watched this movie when I was around 14 and it has always stuck with me, but I could never remember the name until this video
elite channel
Fantastic analysis. This movie is such a work of art. Sucker Punch took so many elements from it but just ended up being derivative
Its funny the lead actress in suckerpunch was also the star of the US remake of this (The uninvited) and basically plays the same character in both.
Subbed! Love this movie, picked it up on dvd in a dollar bin yeeaars ago and it spurred me into Korean cinema! A favorite is The Host, would love to see an essay on that if you havent already! Will find out soon as I binge your content!
I’ve never heard of this movie, but Jesus, the Victorian/vintage wallpaper and decor is giving me unnerving vibes on their own.😳
It's an amazing movie. I don't even like horror movies, but this is one of my most favorite films ever.
"Think of a film that scared you, do you have one?" Yeah, this one. lol
One of my favourite films of all time
Just to think, this movie, Oldboy and Memories of Murder were all released in the same year. Really the most inpressive year for korean cinema imo
Yes. But supporting Spikima as soon as they post is not one of them 🤍
Loved this upload ..informative + beautifully rendered.
the american remake didn't even come close to the mood this one put out. so good
Even your description section has class, congrats!
I couldn't find the second channel though?
Link added to description :)
@@SpikimaMovies Thank you so much 🤗
The Japanese or Korean film not sure, “Red Shoes” is scary as hell too.
GREAT movie. I first watched it years ago and it stuck with me for a long time.
Have you seen Ghost Actress, directed by Hideo Nakata? That movie had me unsettled during the duration of the films running time, and the scene at the end made by blood run cold and I had massive chill bumps break out on my legs.
this is what i have been telling horror community. "foreign" films have so many underrated gems.
I watched this move a couple weeks ago, and it was a ride! Korean sure know how to make horror movies. America, takes notes and learn!!!
It is a good film. Problem is, at the moment the first girl leaves the car we knew that there is only one girl. The camera and words in this scene are to specific.
And when you know the twist in the first 5 minutes it ruins alot
which scene
