From Wikipedia: "Malkmus's attitude continued to deteriorate as the tour wore on, finally coming to a head during their slot at the 1999 Coachella Festival. During the concert, Malkmus refused (or was possibly unable, due to illness) to sing, effectively turning their set into a mostly instrumental one. Nastanovich called a band meeting after the show, and Malkmus finally confided to his bandmates: "I just don't want to do this anymore."
He named the last album. And he was the tour manager... he settled the whole Gary getting kicked out thing pretty well. He added immensely to Pavements stage presence, and live energy.
One thing that I think gets forgotten about this show is how hard they were touring at this point and the impact it was clearly having. This was their 6th show in a row and their 15th show in 17 days so it's perhaps not surprising that his voice isn't so good and he's not too enthused to be there.
No I get it, it's supposed to be a joke. It's just not a very good one. I'd rather listen to the song without him wailing like a hyena in the background. Call me old fashioned.
