- Turn on the forhand, leg-yield, and even half pass can be taught from the ground. Sometimes it is easier to teach your horse these exercises from the ground.

Ok so 2 nights ago I came home after a ride and needing to rethink leg yield off my left leg as I kept losing the shoulder. And this was in my inbox. So I did leg yield in hand last night (he's good in hand already) then went home and rewatched a few videos on leg yield you've done. Rethought things and schooled tonight and he was fantastic and I was way more correct. So perfect timing; thanks so much!
Yay!! I'm so happy to hear this! Good for you!
Love this ground work! He has a great top line, is there any chance you could do a video looking at what conformation to look for in a dressage horse? Thank you!!
That’s a good idea. I should do one 😊
@AMELIANEWCOMBDRESSAGE WHAT KIND OF FOOTING IS THAT? I NEED IT :-)
GGT! Check out my groundwork masterclass - just a few days left to enroll: www.amelianewcombdressage.com/groundwork-masterclass
What you are doing is not a turn on the forehand it is a turn ABOUT the forehand. In a turn ON the forehand the inside front leg pivots in place albeit that it may step in place.
I have said this before ... but again, I love your videos. This one I have shared to all of my students as they are just learning "in-hand" techniques. Your video is a fantastic visual addition to their learning.
Thank you for doing what you do !

Hi Amelia, I saw your video on helping with lifting the legs, and am wondering where I can get a bamboo stick? Thank you 1/31 11:06
I don't know a single English rider who routinely does groundwork, and it's ridiculous to me. This is how you build a relationship and gain respect in a safer way. I guarantee that the jumper in the Olympics who couldn't get her horse to jump would have done better if she had spent her 20-minute warm-up doing groundwork.
You're so right Suzannah! How can we expect a relationship on our horses back if it's not properly established on the ground! Thanks for watching!
@@AmeliaNewcombDressage Thanks for making these videos. I am not riding to show or anything like that, but your videos are really helping as a supplement to lessons for a better seat.
Agree with you! For whatever reason, groundwork is so underrated and not taken seriously enough.
Amelia, you make this look much easier than it is when starting out! lol ❤
So helpful thank you I am alone without my trainer now because of what's happening so thanks to your videos I can carry on teaching him to move away from the leg, we had just started that he is 5yrs old.
Great!!
Glad the videos are helpful during this difficult time!!
This is very informative. I've been struggling with leg yields.... I'll try this tomorrow. thanks!!
Thank you for giving us all these groundwork videos in one place!
At what age can you start this amount of lateral work and crossing over? I’m just starting my very large warmblood and a bit torn on how early I can do some things due to his slower maturity. He is four, but just balancing and muscling bc half draught ( ISH) and a good 17.2h
Big boy! I would start at 3-4 - just don't do too many steps...
Hello, very one in this great youtube chanal.
With big and Many thanks to the wonderful and distinguished coach, Amelia.
Please explain what is the appropriate and guaranteed way to get the horse (on riding or walking ) out of the gate or to move a head on a certain path if it refuses to go out
You need to get the horse to always move off your leg when you ask. Have a look at this video: amelianewcombdressage.com/dressage-training/how-to-wake-up-a-lazy-horse/?RUclips&General
can you ad a link to where I can buy the carbon fiber stick?
Super video. How often can I do these exercises with my horse? Can I do them everyday? Or would it become too boring or cause discomfort etc. I have an older horses that I am retraining. Thank you :)
Hi Amelia, thank you for posting this. It made it clear which hand is supposed to be doing what. From Terry and Sam
You're very welcome!
Harvey is such a good-natured boy trying to help you out. What a cute smarty pants.
My horse got so annoyed with me and I could not get him to leg yield.
I try this ridden and struggle also. He either goes back or just stops completely. Can you offer any other tips of what I can do? He did the turn on the forehand exercise really well. P.s I love your videos I have become obsessed with watching and then practising the tips. Thank you.
It's all about the pressure and release... Just keep the pressure on until he takes just one step sideways, then release and reward.
@@AmeliaNewcombDressage Thank you so much for responding. I tried again over the weekend and got one step sideways and then lots of bum turns in and out. I stopped on a high and will keep trying. He is a talented boy just seems to find this super hard and probably me learning the aids too do not help.
My horse side steps . he won't cross this feet, then offers to kick me... Lol. I even made him watch this video and he's still being stubborn. Unwilling ... I must be doing it wrong. Lol
try going back to drifting the hindquarters with bend first, then try the more advanced work :)
Any suggestions on how to keep a horse from getting super crooked while doing leg yields in hand? I like working on lateral work in hand, but my horse tends to get super crooked through her body.
I love learning about how you do groundwork! Thanks!
Amelia, you are THE best ❤
Great video - thank you for this!
Hi. I love your videos. How long those exercises should be?
This was great! I'm going to try these techniques on the ground! Thanks.
Great video. I was trying decipher what you were doing with your reins when you had him leg yielding and then yielding with his head to the opposite (outside rein) side I think it was the start of a Renvers? I am thinking you want him to seek the contact of the outside rein for the leg yield but what about for the Renvers
Yes. For renvers he should also be in the "Outside" rein which is actually the rein that is closest to me since he would be bending away from me. Confusing I know!!
How long each day should i work on with this for my horses?
Hi Joe,
You can just do it for a few minutes, but also you don't even need to do it every day, it's just good to check in with the groundwork with them every now and again!
By the way, I'm giving a free webinar on the Dressage Training Scale, you will find it really helpful with your journey! You can sign up at the link below! I would love to see you there! But if you can't make it, sign up anyway as we can send you the recording!

Good video and clarity!
Any suggestions on how to keep a horse from getting super crooked while doing leg yields in hand? I like working on lateral work in hand, but my horse tends to get super crooked through his body He shifts his weight back and forth to each shoulder during this exercise as well as during riding. He is a very crooked horse that is a saddlebred and a training challenge.

I'm getting a little bit confused on what you are doing with the reins during this, especially the outside rein as I thought that the inside rein should be lighter
Hi! Yes, the inside rein should be lighter in the exercises with steady contact on the outside rein.
Awesome vid!!!
Amelia your videos are very helpful in training. This one especially because I am working on half pass. I watch your brothers vids too and they are cool but yours are more of training-which is what I love.
Awe! Thank you! Tomorrow's video is all about the half pass! Hope it helps!!
I keep coming back to this video Amelia! Just love your manner xx

I love your videos. All really helpful giving lots of time to demonstrate methods which I then love to practise at home.
Beautiful video as usual !! Thank you!!! May I ask: how does the horse figures out the legs aids? Is it the whip activating the right hind and once on saddle it is understood easily from our leg instead of the whip? I hope i explained my self!! Thank you so much!!
Hey Spazio, do you mean how to teach a green horse (ie one that has never been ridden) or an backed horse you are just teaching the lateral work to?
For a backed horse that you are teaching lateral work too, they will generally make the conection from the inhand work to the undersaddle work simply because of how the whip rests when it's not activated.
For a green horse, they need more help and clearer aids at the girth since they have no idea what a leg aid actually is! Hope that helps answer your question!
@@AmeliaNewcombDressage Thank you very much for taking your time in such a detailed answer!! Yes, in both ways, I understood :) Thank you again!!! I could not succeed though - Ill try again :) :) :) THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!
thanks so much👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻so helpful🌈💚
Wow!
Where did you get your carbon fiber rod? I've been having a hard time finding one.
love this ground work!
super
Great video - wee suggestion, in the UK we use a schooling whip, and teach this in a head collar, not sure if you get those where you are. I'm trying to teach a native breed (Highland pony), not to be afraid of the mounting block, so I'm using should and quarters as a means of doing so! Love your videos!
What is that pad on his back?....great video.
Mary Ann Wettstein-Stoothoff it's his hair
Mary Ann Wettstein-Stoothoff It’s a style of clipping, they leave some hair where the saddle is placed.
What breed is Harvey?
He’s Dutch. KWPN
