Augher station was closed in 1942. it was part of the Clogher Valley Railway which ran between Maguiresbridge and Tynan. I think the railway from Belfast to Enniskillen went by Monaghan or Omagh. I don't think the Clogher Valley Railway ever made any money.
Excellent information JD. Thanks for getting in touch. I didn't realize Augher was closed so early on. I would have kept the railways even though they lost money back then. If they had been kept the tourism that would have been fostered and also so much or that really heavy goods traffic could have been taken off our roads. So much money to be gained and indeed saved! Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.
@@TomMcClean The CVR was only a narrow gauge railway which served some relatively small villages and rural stops. It was a pity they got rid of all stations here in Fermanagh and Tyrone. My great grandmother used to use them frequently back in the 40s and early to mid 50s when she lived between Belfast and Fermanagh
These closures were very short sighted JD. Such a dreadful waste and lost opportunities. Oh dear oh dear! I remember seeing the Banbridge to Newcastle steam trains going past our back windows when I was a lad.
Again Tom such a shame that this happened to our railway system and a lot of the closures were already cut and dried by British Rail and government ministers long before Beecham was appointed it as always amazed me why they appointed a Dr from I.C.I to do a job like this, and i think he was used in some ways as a scapegoat unbelievable.
It was so shortsighted to remove the railways Chris. What an idiotic thing to do! jobs for the boys and all that. Government ministers come and go after a few years of slashing here an there. They usually leave a trail of devastation behind but they often receive, an immediate pat of the back, for their so called saving money cuts. The long term effects that follow don't come into it.
