depends on the width of the tank because that may determine how well it can turn in the tank. but jut a rough guestimate... probably 2+ years if fed a balanced diet... not much longer than that assuming he is a BABY at the present.
depends on many things. tank size, water quality/movement, diet and temperature.... if everything is great it can actually grow around 1 - 1.5 inches per month! as a baby...
i got them when they were already 10 inches long...so i wouldnt really know. ive had them for about 2-3 years and now they are 2 feet long (24 inches). I know the growth rate will be faster when they are smaller but will slow down once they hit a foot long. Keep in mind they grew really quickly because i put them in the pond fast so they had lots of space to swim.
ummm usually they have less chance of jumping in wide open spaces...where they dont feel scared...but yes accidents do happen occasionally...just be alert...
Thank you for the video this is very helpful. I recently inherited my Dad's Silver Arowana, he is 2ft long and about 10 yrs old living in 150 gallon tank. I'm located in NW USA and would love to know how others have set up ponds for their Arowanas.
I think to be safe there shud be at least a 1 foot gap between the top of the pond and water level, just to avoid slight mishaps since ponds dont have covers...
18 degrees celsius (65 faren) is a bit cold...tropical fish need temp in the 20s but if it doesn't get much colder than that, they could do ok. Arowanas are pretty hardy. But im just afraid if it gets MUCH colder at night, u may need to buy a heater to make it work...
im planning on putting 4 arowana in a 800 gallon pond and i want to add a albino silver a silver a black and a jardini anythoughts on that? my plan is to start them small so they get used to each other and my jardini wil be the smallest one in their since they are more aggresive
I'm still a student in the game when it comes to koi...only started keeping them about a year or so ago...really fallen in love with them. once my new ponds are finished my current pond will mostly focus on koi :)
I've got a silver arowana and I got to say you've got a great setup! Wish I could do something similar. A nice long and wide tank on a nice stand is the best I can do though!

Arowana and aquatic life are my passion and although I am just 19 years old and studying to be an engineer, you are truly an inspiration for me to follow my dream in making aquatic life a hobby. I have always wondered though, what happens when it rains? Does that affect your pond (assuming it's outdoors) and if not, how is that? Sorry if you addressed this in your previous videos. I am watching your stuff slowly :)
funny u shud ask. the flowerhorn was my FIRST fish that got me into this hobby! i had my first one wen i was 12!(11 years ago). amazing fish. very personable but aggressive and need to be kept ALONE :) awesome fish. i definitely recommend it. they can do well in 4 foot tanks for life. (180gals)
Would a Jardini live in a 150 gallon with not very much scenery, a super powerful filter, a Large Dovii and a Large Red Tail Catfish? I want to know if I will be making a mistake if I purchase a Jardini.
I got a 180 gallon tank is that appropriate for a silver arowana? He’s only 6inches now or should I be looking to upgrade my tank soon? and I have a pond but I live in Utah where weather changes every 10 minutes so I only keep koi and bass in there
i want to keep an asian arowana (blue base cross back to be precise) can i keep it in a 78"L x 38"W x 29"H (370 gal)? would i need a bigger tank? I am planning to make the aquariun of plywood.
hey really nice vid, especially the feeding section wich in most videos they dont talk about or just feed them live fish or mice.i have a jardini litlle over a year now and everything you said is bang on,(shows how you know) so thumbs up.keep up the good work.ps thanks to your vid that i showed my wife she finally agreed to buy the 8.5 foot tank.yeay.
The arowanas in the pond with the dog... Dont they jump out? You mentioned a lid but how come no lid or fence for those guys? How did you manage to not get them to jump out?
Hi im letting go of my arapaima and getting a 14 inch gold 24k aro.. Is it okay for me to release the aro into my pond straight away? i have kois and catfish in there
Had large 20inches silver & jardini before in a 6ft long tank, the width is only about 18 inches. Sold them due to the width of my tank. So I wonder can i keep audult silver arowana for life in that tank ?
Hi, so i am planning on getting a 1000 gal pond, I was wondering if i can keep a jar and a silver in that edit, I can probably actually do 2000 gallons
U shud be able to get it. TFH magazine is pretty much global. i get it in Malaysia so u definitely will get it in the UK. it is the AUGUST issue (which shud be out for sale july im guessing)
yeh pretty eccentric guy. i met him for the first time when i was about 14 or so...he had a pretty big impact on my hobby. i remember he showed me one of his breeding super red arowanas...pretty amazing...
at that size they pretty much wont eat it unless u seriously starve him for weeks. U can always try and feed him thawed fish meat or prawn meat (without shell). or even whole small fish from the fish market...
they dont really like pellets tbh... the only pellets they love are hikari carnisticks and massivore because the meaty smell is so strong.... they do better with a meaty diet...
Hello I have 3 Silver arowanas, they keep on fighting all the time. How to stop them from fighting and how big should the tank be for 3 baby silver arowanas???
I intentionally left it out to prevent accidental damage to the fish when they hunt or when they chase each other. maybe in my new much larger ponds where damage is less likely.
Is it better to keep 2 of my red arowanas in my pond with my paimas or should I just keep them in an aquarium but I have to maintain the pond? I heard they jump often. But if the aquarium must be regularly maintained and could risk killing it if the maintenance is bad.
amazing vid again mate people can learn alot from you:) and where does that magazine come out? can i get it in england? thanks again for another amazing vid
something is constantly scaring him... maybe sudden noises... other animals? other aggressive fish? OR water quality is bad... if the tank is so small your fish may also jump... feeling trapped...
SOON SOON i will start putting an update together...been so busy organising the new pond....interviewing builders...choosing new types of filtration technology. its been fun. more updates to come :)
hey bro im sure your dreams will come true. And for the most part rain is totally natural because my filtration takes care of it. however... sometimes rain in malaysia can be dirty and u can see the dirt at the water's surface. when this happens i simply overflow the pond for 15 mins with fresh water to clean the scum. :)
I bought 2 silver arowanas from craiglist which were more then 2ft long I released them in my pond. But one of them never ate I tried multiple foods like worms, pellets, minnows, homemade food that my other arowana loves-that's inside the house, crickets but he never ate. One of them died today. I had them for 1 month and a week. The other one I got with it used to it then stopped idk why. What should I feed him. I don't want to lose this arowana.
woah thats a great sized pond :) u can keep a fair few arowanas in there...also depends on the breed. of course 2 wud be fine in that size for life haha.
Yes I actually lost a silver a few years ago...it also happens more often when they are younger and more volatile. when they reach a certain size and age they jump less. Aquariums are smaller with exposed glass sides. arowanas feel trapped and easily scared which makes them jump for safety. Also jumping may be dependent on their diet. I dont feed mine any insects or lizards that may tempt them to jump when they see something. I keep my arows well fed and conditioned.
How do you keep all your arowanas in your pond why do they jump out of aquariums and not ponds? Have you ever had an arowana jump out of the side of the pond and not make it back in?
Hei toby i appreciate all your videos about your fish and thank you so much for sharing about the arowana care guide in the discussion page. Tomorrow i am about to buy a big 1.2 meter aquarium for my 2 silver arowana one big aro and one small aro .i dont know if it fits for two of them when theyre big in full size in the same aquarium together. I hope you enjoyed my comment, and again thank you for making all of your videos and discussions. It was a pleasure to always see your videos thank youTL take care. Bye
Do you have an incident where your arowana jumped out of the pond? I am thinking of making a pond for my cross bank arowana and worried it might jump out of pond.
yeh this is always the dilemma. ive lost ONE silver arowana jumping outa my pond. probs got spooked by one of the larger fish... but thats 1 incident in 15 years... so it really depends on a bit of luck and the circumstances.. if the pond is a GOOD SIZE and has high enuf walls (maybe 1.5 feet or so) then u shud be reasonably safe.. but nothing is 100% i guess. there is always a risk. I also feed all my arowana chopped up fish and not bugs so they are not really conditioned to jump for insects.
Thanks for the tip There are two biggest challenge for me. Hot weather that reaches to 50 degrees so I need a deep pond. Second, little kids in the home. I do not want them jumping in the water, need a fence or high wall. I do not know if that would look good. Still working on the design.
I had one a silver in high school and it jumped out all the way across the room and hit the wall. it was at this point that I have to agree with you and placed a brick on the cover. I used to feed it goldfish liver and shrimp they are good eaters and do recognize you. it always was more excited to see me more than other family or friends.
dude of course i remember u! i even gave u a shoutout once :D like any other hobby there are highs and lows...u cant expect there to always be highs... there will be many uneventful days keeping fish where u feed them, leave them and nothing much else happens.... but sumtimes u do make breakthroughs. like teaching them to eat new food, seeing them do sumthing amazing or just noticing how large they've grown since u first bought them. its a culmination of highs and lows :)
so the same as the aros growth ??? cuz thats what i was going to replace my pacu with but my bro said they grow to slow and it would take them like 3-4years to get into the pond i was going to buy 2 to grow out with my 1soon to be 2 aros in a 50gal then when they hit 8-10inchs ill put them in the 350gall pond till they are all 15-16inchs then they go into the big pond and i will be feeding them every day maybe even 2 times a day so they grow faster (thats if i get them so should i ????)
No choice cause 2 of my fish refuse dead food.. ive starved them for many months before.... but im putting them in a separate tub until the construction of my new ponds. now no more feeders anymore.

hiii.... i am from calcutta(city of joy),india....i am planning to keep silver arowana as pet....will 4ft to 5ft aquirium be more r less enough...am planning to keep the aquirium in a room facing west side.plz advice.
do you recommend keeping a solitary arowana in a planted/decorated tank? because most shops i see sell small juvenile(?) arowana and and i'm thinking to let it grow in the tank before in a pond (maybe)
Yep i did grew it out for 2 years from 2005 to 2007....unfortunately when i moved to my current house the fish movers accidently didnt put the lid on the top and the arow got hurt really badly and didn't make it...i was pretty pissed as u can imagine but there's nothing much u can accomplish by trying to get back something from people who are less fortunate. it isn't gona bring the fish back :(
hey would it be okay to put a silver with a clown knife who is 4 or 5 inches smaller and a pacu who is about 4 inches together in a 5 by 5 by 3 pound???? and what is the best thing to feed a 8 inch Shovelnose catfish??
Likely the best show of its type that I have had the pleasure of coming across.
Extremely well done
I would love to have a arowana but I don't have any room for a large tank or pond, lol. I'll just enjoy looking at videos of them. Great video!
How deep would you say is good for a pond to keep aros ?
doesnt need to be so deep tbh.. 3 feet is enuf even for the biggest adult arowanas. maybe even 2.5 feet deep is enuf too
depends on the width of the tank because that may determine how well it can turn in the tank. but jut a rough guestimate... probably 2+ years if fed a balanced diet... not much longer than that assuming he is a BABY at the present.
depends on many things. tank size, water quality/movement, diet and temperature.... if everything is great it can actually grow around 1 - 1.5 inches per month! as a baby...
AWESOME video! It's great to see someone looking after these fish properly, and even better that you give very good information in the video! Love it.

Yep unfortunately i dont have one. but they are so similar to silvers. just smaller, differently shaped fins and more colourful. care is similar...
Its so nice to see Arowana in environments in which they are comfortable. Instead of tanks 100 gallons too small for them.
ummm usually they have less chance of jumping in wide open spaces...where they dont feel scared...but yes accidents do happen occasionally...just be alert...

I want to buy a baby silver (3"max). How long could I house it in a 90g?
so the same as the aros growth ???
cuz thats what i was going to replace my pacu with but my bro said they grow to slow and it would take them like 3-4years to get into the pond
i was going to buy 2 to grow out with my 1soon to be 2 aros in a 50gal then when they hit 8-10inchs ill put them in the 350gall pond till they are all 15-16inchs then they go into the big pond and i will be feeding them every day maybe even 2 times a day so they grow faster (thats if i get them so should i ????)
Another way is to use some small fans powered by batteries to blow into the tank, it might be able to lets them survive a little longer.

hiii.... i am from calcutta(city of joy),india....i am planning to keep silver arowana as pet....will 4ft to 5ft aquirium be more r less enough...am planning to keep the aquirium in a room facing west side.plz advice.
do you recommend keeping a solitary arowana in a planted/decorated tank? because most shops i see sell small juvenile(?) arowana and and i'm thinking to let it grow in the tank before in a pond (maybe)
+Nano Kumo yeh its cooler to let it grow a bit so u can train it to eat wat u want.. then in the pond it will be much easier to feed...
You have a silver arowana in pond, can they withstand cold?
great job bro im sure your fish will appreciate it. mine constantly swim against my current during the day... kinda like a water treadmill :)
how do we differentiate a male and a female..and know whether they are ready for breeding...
Will they jump out of ponds/pools? Do you need the water level to be a a certain distance from the edge of the pool/pond?
How can I identified the gander of Arowana ? Can I keep two Arowana in one tank
What do you do with the aros in winter time?
no winter where i live bro :) but some people just move them into a indoor tank with a heater... cheaper than heating a pond...
hey can i put my silver in a 300 gal stock tank
yeh sure thing.. will last him a few years fo sure.
MyAquaticDiary my silver passed away
yungstahotmail sorry for ur loss bro :(
no prob bro .
