Fighting Climate Change with 1 Billion Oysters

  • Oysters are good for more than just eating on the half shell: in New York City, they're helping restore and preserve the harbor. An adult oyster can filter up to fifty gallons of water a day, and oyster reefs foster biodiversity and help protect shorelines. The Billion Oyster Project is on a mission to repopulate NY’s Harbor with 1 billion oysters by 2035, the same number that have disappeared from its waters over the past 100 years.
BOP collects used oyster shells from restaurants and repurposes them for oyster larvae to attach onto, then drops oyster cages into NYC’s waters to grow. Through various educational programs, the organization fosters local climate activism and helps empower young New Yorkers by teaching them about the city’s often overlooked natural resources.

I'm glad she said they weren't eating them. Using them for cleaning the bay sounds better. Eating oysters out of New York Bay sounds like a new disease/virus waiting to happen.

@UC7qi6N14uJnZPc6YZgYpTBQ oh and in that time all the pollutants the cell structure has used to build the oyster, just disappear right?

Hi Vivek! Thanks for the question. The various structures we use to house oysters make it possible for us to monitor them with students and community scientists. In some locations, the oysters grow so well that when we check on them they have grown through the openings to the point that you can't see the structure! For now, our oysters remain in the structures indefinitely.

Many New Yorkers forget that we live in a coastal city! What better way to grow fond of something than working together to make it better?

      Oysters are like reefs? 😂😂
As someone who grew up with both the great barrier reef and oysters... oysters are nothing like a reef.
Oysters also do almost nothing other than consume pollutants in heavy pollution areas.
Hence why... they aren't eating these oysters. Because they live in absolute filth. They eat the filth, they become the filth.
Much like humans who eat junk for years. They become unhealthy.
So how in the world does this deal with climate change? Honestly. I've heard how these oysters are developed and put in the water. Which is great, don't get me wrong. It helps the eco system.
Yet oysters have almost nothing to do with the climate of the world, as almost 90% of species have nothing to do with the climate of the world.
