Okay, a couple things guys. First of all, Summer literally gave me chills when she mentioned Jimin's Lie in particular connecting it to this BTS' era. Her assumption was on point, he did struggle with his self-image in the beginning, because while they were given the freedom to be themselves, they were still very young and trying to find themselves. The industry at the time put the label of "bad guys" on them, because of the rebellious spirit of their early music and their dress code. It was hard for them to separate what people thought of them from their own feelings. In songs like "Idol" or Jimin's solo "Filter", they are acknowledging the fact that they are given (and give themselves) many labels, however, they have the realization that they have every right to move from one to the other, because at the end of the day they might just be a combination of all of those labels and also parts of them that are hidden to the public. You'll find a similar message in Namjoon's "Persona".
Also being in a group with 6 other people, sometimes what you wish for is hard to be expressed fully, you have to make sure that you can reach a common ground between all the parts of the group. Some of the members at the time were still very new to music production and songwriting, so their artistic direction was relying mainly on the members that had more experience. If you listen to the albums in order, while there is a particular moment where you can tell that they decided to switch their concept, the whiplash effect you experienced from watching this video and listening to this song is not as intense. Their growth is a little more gentle, and you'll realize how some of the songs you've listened to so far fit into the album's story and the eras they were experiencing at the time of each album. Even if the genres don't always match throughout the whole album there are other things that keep it consistent, like the production style, the lyrical content, a few metaphors or references, and so on.
Serious stuff aside, Daniel's joke about them looking very intense because of the eyeliner was the cherry on top of this video. Taehyung made the same exact joke while they were watching their debut performances. J-Hope said "you can see the passion in our eyes" and Tae deadpanned "that's the eyeliner".

Boy With Luv is kind of an alternate version of Boy In Luv and shows how much BTS have grown in terms of concept and music. Rather than just being 'In love' they're now filled 'with love' and wish to share it with others. This MV shows youthful and aggressive love but Boy With Luv shows the beauty of love in itself.

BTS music really represents the different eras in their lives. This was the final title track of the school trilogy. So if you look at when each MV is released and figure out their ages during that time, the sentiment of the song is going to represent that particular era in their lives as they were a part of the song writing and composing with each album. So once you get through the whole discography (and it’s a lot of music) you’ll realize, you grow up with BTS through the years.

10:07 Whoever is going through the comments tonight, please let Xen know even in passing that I am so grateful she decided to include that clip of Jimin reflecting on himself. That is such an important clip not just for Jimin but for all seven of them. Summer once again is right (GIRL YOU ARE ALWAYS ON POINT BTW) about how Boy in Luv is a part of an era that BTS has learned from and cherished but grown out of. They grew, not only out of the eyeliner and the clothes they used to wear, but also out of the societal expectations of them especially as boys/men. They've all become more comfortable in who they are. It has given a lot of ARMYs courage to do the same and its just another reason why we're so thankful for them.
Once you've consumed more content, you'll see that their music is a reflection of themselves as individuals and the stages they've gone through in life. For example, Black Swan which was released more recently had a more mature and introspective feel to it. That song tackled their fear of losing their passion for making music, definitely a heavier topic.Once again, lovely video. Thank you and can't wait for Thursday!

I agree with Summer saying "it was a phase" to some extent. I think this just proves how authentic and involved BTS are with their music; it grows with them. So naturally, in their teenage years, they sung about their own teen experiences like young love, education, societal expectations, and the like. As they mature and grow in wisdom and experience, they sing about themes that they feel are most reflective of where they are at in life. Their discography is basically an autobiography of all seven of them hence, why I think their music resonates so much with a lot of people. So yes, it is a "phase" but one that bears witness to their authentic and unique artistry.

I think it’s something that’s more obvious if you look at the MVs in order, but their music grows with them! So their earlier music (the school trilogy) is written with the thoughts and feelings of being young boys, around school age, dealing with things like crushes and hormones and parental and societal expectations (because that’s what they were!). Then as they and their music grew and matured, they continued to focus on themes surrounding youth and their problems, but more mellowed out sound-wise compared to their earlier stuff. It also deals a lot more heavily with temptation and loss of innocence. Then we get to the Love Yourself Era, where they as artists share the pain of getting to know and love yourself in a world that makes it really hard to do so sometimes. Then there is the Map of the Soul series, which really digs deep into the ‘finding yourself’ theme, and finally accepting that there may be parts of yourself and your identity that are in conflict with one another, but it’s okay because all those different parts are all you . All of these ‘concepts’ from their music is actually reflections of what BTS themselves were feeling and going through, and they used their music to capture these thoughts. Loved your reaction, can’t wait for what’s next!! 🤩

It is a reflection of a typical "boy in love" as a teenager. they did this when Jin was 20, Suga 19, RM and Jhope 18, V and Jimin 16, and JK was 15. So yes this is "Boy in Love" in this certain period of time. Aggressive, impulsive, careless. so you can also see that their lyrics mature as they age. It gets more depth into it. They started out a hip-hop group. The bad boy in love image just came with it. It was one of those concepts that the youth related with. They only got freedom to experiment and developed once they had a following that would ensure their songs would be loved regardless. Honestly, they broke out of the mould pretty quickly and I'm so proud of them for it.
I know most ARMYs don't like to dig it up but Boy In Luv, in particular, received a lot of backlash for some lyrics that could be seen as misogynistic. RM, at the time, with the other writers, was going for relatability and amongst young men, the whole idea of being domineering and confessing passionately is very appealing. RM has long since realised that he doesn't need to cater to such notions. Boy With Luv is actually a reply to this song - a way of saying that we have changed, our ideas have changed and we have evolved. If you'll notice, Boy With Luv is literally the other pole of Boy in Luv. They're wearing pink, they're smiling at the camera throughout, the lyrics are empowering and pleasant and sweet. I love this because it goes to show that these 7 men have been in the spotlight for far too long but still they've managed to grow and adapt and stand for they believe in. :)))

I personally didn't find their lyrics all that controversial and still to this day like listening to their older releases. It's just important to put things into context. They've made mistakes, it's weird to not acknowledge that when RM himself has and I don't think I made excuses for that?

WOW Summer, you really got Jimin, like you really understood what his dilemma was. And this was exactly what he was talking about in Lie. Jimin IS very manly and does have all the martial arts training and all that but his personality is very soft and kind and affectionate and he definitely didn't vibe with the hyper machismo persona that the older concepts were. The company also chose him to be the person who showed his abs and stuff in performances which took him down a path of unhealthy dieting and obsession about his body because of the pressure to have abs. That is all what he meant in Lie.
Now he still works out a lot but is more balanced about it and is true to himself and has matured to be confident with who he is and to play up his sexy dancing in his performances which is definitely one of his strengths.
That's amazing that you picked it up without watching any of their documentaries or behind the scenes content where he has spoken about it. BTS are role models in terms of progressiveness and really eschewing the stereotypic toxic masculinity that has been taught to young boys and men and they really show you can be men while being thoughtful and loving and still strong.

Summer is SO ON POINT with that Jimin reference with Lie. I'm so impressed by his growth. Jimin is talented enough to be whatever persona is required for the album, and Jimin has said he fully immerses himself in the concepts of their album. But I love that BTS' music direction as a whole has shifted to fully show all their unique colors.
And pls let me apologize for their behavior in this song 😭 They were teenage boys who tried to act tough. Jin kept apologizing to the actress during the MV recording (you can watch this in Memories 2014).

Actually their dancing early on was much more intense than it has been lately. Just a reflection of their evolution as a group. And then we got Run BTS. 🙂 Fun reaction!! There are a lot of behind the scenes of this shoot.... Jin immediately bowing to the girl and apologizing after slamming her against the lockers.... So precious. ☺The choreo for this song is great if you want to check out the dance practice. This was "them" early on... their first 2 albums, I believe, were along this style. I Need U was the turning point for them, when they allowed their softer side to show.... and their first win which started it all... I do NOT know how y'all do this without watching everything immediately!! I couldn't stand the wait!

I'm still amazed at the scope. This song is part of the School Trilogy Era, their first 3 mini albums, which were all put out within THEIR FIRST YEAR after debut. So yes they were young, and the eyeliner is iconic. This era gave us so much music. You are early in your exploration, and MAMA 2019 is a nice compass, but each era gave so much awesome songs. Edit : The title songs are absolutely awesome; no skips, but, and i'm actually tearing up a little, when you will get to the "b sides"... No words can encompass their whole musical universe.

Guys - their discography is in chapters and follows their evolution as young people in a band starting out w the school series - and about being surprised why? Before debut they trained tirelessly perfecting their dancing, singing, rapping, public speaking, fan interactions (that’s the KPOP industry) and as you can see BTS redefined this industry by writing about their own experiences and the cultural/social/political subjects that mattered most to them.

It shows the school where they used to study together, and the room where they used to play music, have fun and skip classes. It’s one of the happiest moments before everything fall apart. Later on, when they separate from each other, it’s when each one of them start having problems with their traumas (just like in Fake Love where you could see each one of them suffering somehow). Loving their beginnings. There are so many people who squirm and find it embarrassing to vibe with fetus Bangtan but I am not one of them.... I absolutely love it. You can see all raw edges to them and insane drive to make a mark, confidence too. Being a middle age Army, I have a soft spot for youthful Bangtan, I guess its something you start to treasure and understand appreciation for first after you have lived a bit and can reminiscent on stuff that is fleeing in life. First when its gone, you become aware how precious it was and how you miss it. Gosh they had so much fire in them from the very beginning:-)
Just look at them back then, with Joonie already flashing his alpha commanding persona, Suga lethally swagging away and Kookie going for it like there is no tomorrow..... all truly great.
I find it absurd that some people took an issue with this song and lyrical content. It is honest and it is true to all young boys reality:-) I would personally pick Boy in live 10, 000, 000 x over the Lalalalala Boy with Love.

I absolutely LOVE 'school trilogy' baby BTS, Cypher, We On, 2nd Grade, Look Here, the tracks are amazing You seem to think that this era was an experiment, it wasn't. They started off more hip hop and were trying to tell their own stories through their music and this was the genuine result. You can't get more honest than that, making tracks that don't guarantee easy wins but come from the heart. Obviously they grew up and matured too.
BTS NEVER want to give ARMY the same music over and over, surely you can see that for yourself from the range in their music catalogue.💜

If you start from the beginning of their discography and listen chronologically then you will see their growth not only musically but also from boys to men. One thing to note, is this song's Korean title I think translates to Manly Man and is about teen love with a sort of naive outlook on what love is. JK starts the song saying he wants to be your Oppa (boyfriend). They wrote Boy With Luv as a follow up to show how they have matured and how their viewpoint on love has matured. Boy With Luv Korean title translates to A Poem for Small Things and it is more about how love is about the little things. The beginning of that song Jimin says I am curious about everything about you. RM once said in an interview that BIL was about love outside of yourself and BWL is about love inside yourself. The opening lyrics show that progression from I to You.

Summer bringing up Jimin putting on this persona at the beginning of their careers made me really happy because it shows that y’all are remembering all this stuff and putting things together and it’s really cool seeing you make these connections 🤍🤍🤍🤍
Gabriel I think both of these things were happening at the same time. Big Hit gave them WAY MORE freedom than most other kpop companies but like you said they each had to go through their own individual self discoveries. So maybe the group (as well as the company) would decide on a concept but Jimin (or any of the others but Jimin is the most obvious) didn’t feel secure enough in his identity to say that the concept didn’t feel right for him. So although they had quite a lot of freedom, he didn’t feel comfortable expressing himself authentically just yet.

If you remember in the guide they started as a Hip Hop group. They did song that could relate to young men in school and new love and what young teen boys go through and deal with. They did later transition along with their age to a more mature and growing up eras. And they have never been afraid to try new genera's and content but always staying true to their feelings and about real subject matter that youth and people in general all go through. That is what makes them who they are. They have never just stuck with one thing and sang about general topics or situations. They have always gone much deeper than that. You have honestly barely scratched the surface of a lot of their deepest stuff. Anything that has to do with the BU is very deep and all has very deep meanings. Even their Hip Hop era delt with struggle of the youth with love, society, and expectations from others. You will continue to be surprised , trust me on that, lol. But ARMY will be here to help you with any questions and to guide you in the right direction. Love you guys, you are awesome. And we would love to hear your music and singing sometime as well. I love watching their dance practice videos from this timeframe because I love how their footwork sounds. Don't forget that in the early days, the rap line drove a majority of their creativity since the rest were so much younger. I think this is the world they knew. There was a conversation between RM and Jin about how Jin struggled because he had to appear tougher and more into hip hop than his usual self whereas the maknae line were still getting to know themselves. I wouldn't say "this was not them" because it definitely was when they were that age and part of their growing pains.

    1. Abigail had me cracking up with her comment that the boys came out of the womb dancing 🤣 She's so hilarious and I love her animated reactions always.
    2. One of the best part about going through BTS' discography from 2013 to present is that it is very obvious that the boys were really involved in their own music - their discography, the storyline and messages, clearly evolved and grew up with them. Skool Luv Affair album clearly showed their adolescent / young student selves during that time.
    3. BTS choreography and dancing skills from 2013 to present remains the same, top-notch as always, if not getting better still! Maybe a little difference is that during their younger years, their moves were very tight, precise, and with strict choreography from start to end of the song - whereas in the recent years, they're more carefree and mix their choreography with freestyle moves - but their dancing skills and synchronization remains top-notch 💜

This is early BTS. The song is the title track from the final album of their School trilogy. This was the time when they were experimenting with their sounds. This trilogy is about their teenage school years, the rebellious boys. It took them a lot of time to figure out the BTS sound. Now we call it the BTS genre coz they managed to create something that uniquely them.
Please listen to 'Danger' from their studio album Dark and Wild. It is one of my favorite title tracks from BTS. The song also has a Rock element.

also, early BTS holds lots of quality. the School Trilogy (their first three albums) still holds some of my personal faves. Cypher 2, N.O, Paldogangsan, We On, 어디에서 왔는지, Outro: Circle Room Cypher (watch/listen for the cuteness cos lyrics vids struggle with this one lol you'll see), Outro: Luv In Skool (A+ vocals), Intro: Skool Luv Affair, Outro: Propose, Spine Breaker. THIS WAS UNEXPECTED.
I wasn’t sure how you guys were gonna go through your BTS journey but taking it way back was a surprise. I love this song though! Amazing!
Cannot wait for MMA 2019! But there’s plenty to learn before then :)

I really appreciate the thoughtfulness with which you are exploring BTS. Honestly seeing you watch this and connect the portrayal back to Jimin and Lie, it just shows how much you are genuinely learning and understanding what they create. It's so nice.
I know it can almost feel a little jarring to go from a more modern MV to one of the older ones. I will always appreciate the older music because it's what got them their original fanbase, and allowed them to gain a foothold in the industry, and they are all bops. I know it took them a while to really find their own style, but I'm forever grateful that they grew in success enough that they were able to explore so many styles over the years. I follow several other groups too and can only wish them all the same lifespan in the industry, and the same hard earned freedom to really explore their sound.

Everyone is always taken aback by their young eras.. but like, they’re so relatable.. you can sense their youth and the fact that they’re literally acting their age all throughout their music.. never trying to be something their not. They literally went through ALL the phases.. just like we all did growing up ! And just like us, they too grew up and grew into their sound. Absolutely love the old sound but knowing they’ve had a hand in every stage of their writing/career is so special no matter what era or album you’re enjoying. That was BTS just as much as todays Bts is BTS.

Love the editor 💜🤌 and yes this definitely was a phase where it's about their school life and their teenage days(school crush vibes) it tried to incorporate such concepts which would make sense for them at that time and age but they so much gold albums can't wait for y'all to see them their music is always relevant and timeless

Since BTS grew with ARMY you'll see many emotions and phases. Although they were always authentic, sometimes they felt the need to act a certain way to gain fans or show growth. Their early music talks a lot about their youth and their struggles with it, including debut struggles. Like you said they were teenagers and young adults so their music reflects the mindset they had back then. Don't let that make you think they weren't great lyricists from the start though, it's insane how good their early music is although they were so young.

You guys really should watch dance practices on those older songs, especially this one. They are really precise and perfect. They were sooooo good & impressive and that's one of the reasons they stood out from other groups. You must check it out. My recommendation for your usual routine reactions, do mv, dance practice & live performance per song per reaction session.

I totally agree; you are missing out if you don't watch the dance practice for this particular song; the choreography is crazy, and you don't get to see it all in the MV.

You guys are going to have a blast reacting to their old stuff....10 years in the industry, but killing it since day 1. That's BTS for you
