Keeping Lane off from school definitely counts as abuse IMO. Mrs Kim's 'growth' in later seasons is overrated IMO. She improves from a pretty terrible, downright abusive mom, to an acceptable one. She 'grew' and improved, to where she should already have been anyway.
@@Gizo02 if she was keeping her home to beat her or chain her up then I would agree. But lane had a warm bed, she was allowed to use the phone and her mother was still making her dinner and snacks. She was basically just grounded. Keeping her from school was extreme but not abusive
@@megmur1766 she often stopped her leaving the house, she actively stunted her development, and she tried to force her own religious beliefs on her to her, while simultaneously being a cowardly hypocrite and hiding those beliefs from her own mom in Korea. And yes keeping a child from going to school, illegal in Connecticut and many other states, is definitely abusive. Abuse isn’t just physical it’s mental as well and Mrs Kim was clearly guilty there.

And her mothers beliefs were hers bc when Zack wanted to be intimate lane was the one who insisted they get married first. Lanes mother was just a person in a foreign country doing what she knew how to do. I would say she was overly protective but I wouldn't say abusive. She never called lane dumb or lazy. Lane had to date boys her parents approved of but I think everyone's parents would prefer their daughters date boys they like as well. Her and lane didn't have Lorelai and Rory's relationship but honestly that wouldn't have worked for them. Kids need structure.
