    My take on movie Chani is that she is not against Paul marrying Irulan per se but Paul reverting back to his duke persona and abandoning (to her mind) his Fremen identity. Also, she is against the Fremen going on a religious jihad being used as a tool to maintain imperial (Paul) power.

    • @ChrisMGermann
      @ChrisMGermann 2 месяца назад +7

      Strongly agree 👍 I'm just not sure how I feel about this take though... From a certain point of view, taking the angle that being a theocratic megalomaniac might be BAD isn't exactly a wild leap, but it does rob the source text of it's catharsis AND totally undermines both the themes of "the spice must flow" being the source of all power from the book, but also totally undermines the conflict that if the great houses learn of the emperor's betrayal of house atreides than he'd lose his throne?? I just don't see an in-universe reason for jihad to start IMMEDIATELY other than to make a hook for the next movie... But at what cost???

      I feel movie Chani is very different to book Chani. It wouldn't have made sense for movie Chani to be ok with Paul's actions in the same way book Chani is. It's a good example of a director allowing the character to change rather than just forcing her into doing something that doesn't make sense for this *version* of the character.

    • @rollinrat4850
      @rollinrat4850 2 месяца назад +3

      @@adamhopkins2976
      Yes, very different. Those who haven't read the books (a large % of viewers) would never understand this.
      Chani's character was one of my very few disappointments in this film. I disliked her anger towards the end. She wasn't so angry in the book.
      I understand why things are changed for movies adapted from books. I dont see a logical reason for Chani's change in character.
      Honestly, its a small complaint in an otherwise incredible film.

    Honestly, my only big complaint about Part II is that ending change with Chani. It was also a huge power move by Paul to put House Corrino in a very humbling place - just because Princess Irulan was "royal" blood, doesn't mean Paul will value her more than the non-status Fremen, Chani. It is a MAJOR theme in that book (and even the entire Dune series) that women of no/little status, like Jessica and Chani, are ultimately able to change the entire fate of the universe - because it is NOT about the lineage you are born into, or the "power" you are given, but all about the destiny and path you make for yourself.

    I'm not sure how I feel about the new ending... It totally subverts the "spice must flow" logic that made Paul's gambit work to begin with and the core theme of power from the first book... But it also subverts the films own narrative because ultimately the emperor's betrayal of the atriedes means nothing in the end to the major houses. I feel like they just REALLY wanted a hook at the end of this movie and were willing to sacrifice the resolution and even their own world building to have it?? I don't know, the end has really made me a bit uncomfortable about the whole thing in a way... Which isn't NOT like Dune, but kinda why I really like the first book as a stand alone 😅 lol

      The BG's plan was to control their Kwisatz Haderach, similar to how they explain they can control Feyd. They recognized the signs of their false religion on Arrakis, but Paul is the unexpected anomaly in the equation. He and his powers arrive a generation earlier than expected and the BG don't have a way to control him. Plus Paul can see farther than any of the BG and understands a larger vision of humanity's future.

    • @smoovadatious2356
      @smoovadatious2356 2 месяца назад +6

      The made up part is about Paul being a messiah. In their prophecy, they are describing the kwisatz haderach(KH). So that one day the KH of their choice could go there and rule the fremen as a religious figure. The BG knew one day a KH would go to arrakas and would need the religion of the “made up story” to easily get the Fremen to fall in line.
      At the end, they are actually surprised. But not by the fact that their “made up story” is true, but that Paul is in fact the KH, and everything happened earlier then they expected.

The movie take away so many roles of chani, of her being a mother, a sayyaddina, a daughter to liet kynes, a niece to stilgar, and more importantly an anchor to paul. An anchor to paul is the way that chani should be written. With all the mess the precient brings, there's chani for paul to lean on. An analog for this is Sam And Frodo, sam without as loyal and devoted guy that he is, Frodo wouldn't be the same. This change of chani hurts paul the same way as undevoted sam would hurt frodo.
      Also fremen in general seem not as smart to me, they only follow Paul just because of what's written. When in the book, they follow paul because, he is the strongest (strongest leads), he teach the fremen the wierding way, his council is taken by all the fremen wise and unwise. We literally seen none of that, except the one with jamis, we didn't even see a single fremen call him out in a fight. Yes stilgar called him out, but it is to offer his life, not to have a even fight. Also there's the things with only 9 months and you persuade all the fremen to fight for you?
      Well that's just me tho

      @@ragingtomato04 that's one way of interpreting it... I would definitely point out that the role you imagine chani as (how the book is written) is completely one dimensional (as is sam in the comparison you make). I don't think there can be many arguments there. I actually think she plays both the opposition and confidant in the movie and represents the "non-believeing" freeman quite well. Most of the stuff you mentioned is pretty antiquated themes (like judging a women's worth by their family liniage) so for that reason I appreciate the update.

    • @ragingtomato04
      @ragingtomato04 Месяц назад

      It is not about judging women about their lineage it's about acknowledging Chani has a range of roles and avenues of strength, influence, and power. She becomes Paul’s love but begins as the young woman who introduces him to a foreign desert land in his visions and the one who guides him as he integrates into the Fremen community. She is a fierce young fighter as well as a religious leader in her role as Sayyadina, standing apart from Paul to oversee the cultural rites. She is a young mother who finally wins the approval of her child’s Bene Gesserit grandmother, Jessica, and saves Paul from a long coma. She is wise enough to understand the political necessities of Paul legally marrying a princess and trusted by him to negotiate the marriage contract. Meanwhile in movie almost everytime I see her, she always have this b**ch face look, and made it quite hard make a chemistry with paul.

    • @ragingtomato04
      @ragingtomato04 Месяц назад

      And let's talk about this for a moment.
      Liet-kynes, a man that devoted his entire life for his dream and by extension, all of the fremen's dream to terraform Arrakis. This dream is so important to them to the point that, even if someone is in dire need of water, they wouldn't even dare touching the collected pool of water allocated for that dream. This also is the very reason why Kynes decided to help paul. I don't know if DV will still link chani to kynes but it's still doesn't change the fact that she is a fremen and said many times that she fights for them.
      So I don't really get what's chani getting angry about when her people's dream and maybe also her fathers dream. will be much closer to achieve when Paul becomes the Emperor. Contrary to popular belief that the movie chani is "smart" but ironically failed to understand Imperial politics

    I'm worried that they're going to shove an unnecessary love triangle into the next movie since they didn't have Paul make it clear he was only marrying the emperor's daughter in name only and Channi would be his true partner.

    1. Chani should not abandon Paul. Writing her to constantly be skeptical of him changes her character too much.
    2. Flattening Stilgar into a one-note evangelical comic relief is a tragedy on par with what Peter Jackson did to Gimli in LOTR.
    3. Gurney and Rabban needed a better fight scene than what they got.
    4. SHOW ME THE SPACING GUILD WHERE IS THE SPACING GUILD?!
    5. Yet, I prefer these to films to the adaptations that have come before.

      1. Giving Chani more agency changes the character a lot but for the better.
      2. Stilgar and Gimli are some of the best parts of their respective films.
      3. Rabban's death was perfect for how pitiful he'd become.
      4. I AGREE, WHERE ARE THE WEIRD ALIEN FISH MEN (I know they don't appear till Mesiah but I would have loved a tease)
      5. Lynch's Dune is a trip but that's about it. Villeneuve's Dune will be seen as the definitive version.

      On your point #4, writing out the Guild and the Navigators dependence on the spice find a path through space, seriously weakens the story. Without the Guild as a balance to the power of the Emperor and the royal Houses, Arrakis becomes a unimportant part of the galaxy and the renders Paul's threat of "he who can destroy a thing, controls a thing" much less powerful.

      @@liampugh The viewer needs to know in this film because this movie at the end, the great houses are assembled above the planet and the movie claims the houses don't accept Paul's ascendancy to the throne. In the book Paul orders the Guild to remove them. Without the threat of destroying the spice, Paul couldn't have ordered the Guild and the Guild brings the houses under control. Without the power over the guild, the Fremen are reduced to an army of religious fanatics on a backwater planet.

    I added the "Jesus from Nazareth" theme in a Dune scene, and you can really see how music changes the way you feel for Paul: one makes him look evil, the other a savior!
