    Massive shout out to you Great Lakes Junction for making this video. You really helped me build up the confidence to take on this repair without taking car to dealership.
    I was not able to remove the lower steering column torx screw, located behind the brake pedal, but I did remove the 4 large bolts securing the steering column (along with the 4 small torx screws on the metal plate, hiding that sensor) just so I was able to move the steering column around to reach the actuator.
    Motorcraft part cost $57 online where dealership quoted $100.
    The actuator in my 2014 Fusion Hybrid failed after 128k miles; I will say I’m lucky as I am reading other’s had them fail at under 50k miles!
    Not a fun repair overall, but doable if you can find the right phillips driver to reach the upper screw. I used a combination of snake & various sized extensions; it was not easy but I worked at it and finally finished!
    Good luck to others out there who are considering to take on the challenge. Hang in there.

      I would also like to say thanks. I just replaced one in my daughters 2015 Fusion. 1.5 hrs and done. One thing I discovered is removing the top screw on the actuator is easier because there is an opening in front that allows you to actually see that top screw. I tried looking from the bottom and you can’t see it. I sat in the drivers seat and it becomes visible. Made removing and reinstalling a breeze. I used a Phillips bit tip and installed that into a small socket and ratchet. Made it much easier. Thanks again.

      @GreatLakesJunction - Great work. Thank you for posting. If I remove the steering column do I need to disarm the airbag system? @jchrt - When you removed the steering column bolts (and top sensor): 1. Did you need to remove all other electrical connections from column, and; 2. Did you need to disarm the airbag system?
      I have the old actuator removed and am waiting for the new part. I did the removal with the steering column in place. The amount of extra time and aggravation the access issue caused makes me wonder if it would've been quicker to just remove the column - and am still considering it for the second part of the job (maybe Jchrt's column "manipulation" is a good alternative).
      PS: I've done ground-up automobile restorations and yet have found this repair to be particularly annoying (but well worth the $$ savings).
      Thanks much

    Hopefully you're still checking the comments on this. Im looking at doing this for the same make model and year. Very helpful 2 videos. I do want to know if the lights on the instrument panel need to be set to a specific setting before starting. What i don't want is for me to set a new actuator and the buttons are lit in the wrong place for what it is actually set to or if it corrects itself once you've completed the reinstall.
    I would hate for it to have a light turned on to the floor mode when it's actually set to blow out the front vents. Hopefully I'm making sense.

    • @GreatLakesJunction
      @GreatLakesJunction  7 месяцев назад +1

      light setting does not matter, the actuator is only there to operate the door/vent.
      it has no impact on the light.

    Hi! I want to ask, what position the regulator of the new motor is in 0/45/210/260 degrees? Putting the new one to whose position the existing one that is left has to be changed on vent?
    Thanks

    • @GreatLakesJunction
      @GreatLakesJunction  2 года назад +1

      do not turn the new one, it may damage the unit. there is enough of the shaft sticking out to engage the door/vent and rotate it into position. This will change the position of the door to correspond correctly with the position of the motor.

      I would assume yes, there are 3 motors. 1 changes the temperature only, 1 determines if you are recycling air or bringing fresh in from outside, this one changes which vents the air comes out of. But this is only my thought.

    I've been messing around with this on my 2016 Ford Fusion. The vents are blowing out of the defrost only and wont switch to the front facing vents. I bought the car from an auction an unbeatable price and this seems to be the only issue.. The previous owner apparently left a couple Door Mode Actuators in the vehicle already. I would imagine they got frustrated and decided to sell instead of repairing. Now I have about 3 Actuators with no indication of which one may be working. Is there any way i can test or confirm which one is works? if any.. I may just order a brand new part but want to ask first before potentially wasting money.. I've attempted to install one of them without putting the screws in place just to see what it does. i did turn it to fit it into the slot and it rotates when i switch the the AC controls but still only comes out of my defrost. Does the rotating mean that it works and that my problem could be somewhere else or should i just try buying a brand new part

    • @GreatLakesJunction
      @GreatLakesJunction  Год назад

      Not sure if your 2016 is the same as my 2014.
      The new actuator I purchased from a dealer for $50.00 the one i changed in this video is the one that controls which vents the air comes out of.
      If the actuators left in the car are for other functions they may not have the same range of motion. I dont know of anyway to test them.
      Be safe buy the new part. Congrats on the car.

    I used a 3 foot long screwdriver , from the side of the dash, a wobble bendy extension and one of those finger ratchets to remove both actuators. The way they design every piece has to be on purpose. They could’ve used bolts and it would’ve been easy but no let’s use Phillips head screws. The gears to the bottom are behind a solid bar . Every screw is just off by like a mm to being easy but no let’s make it horrible. I removed the gauge Cluster and there’s a tiny hole that allows you to see the top screw on the top actuator . They just design stuff to make it impossible to work on stuff, but when you make me mad I’m going to figure it out . I also used a big zip tie and pushed the brake pedal back and zipped it to the steering rod. I just did not want to remove the brake pedal. There should be rules against this. I think I changed my whole turbo out quicker than this job took. That’s just crazy.

    • @GreatLakesJunction
      @GreatLakesJunction  2 года назад

      It is crazy, I think the manufacturers make it difficult on purpose just so we have no choice but to pay their high labour rates for repairs. Glad you where able to fix itself.

      @grampymeyer6603 2 года назад

      @@GreatLakesJunction Difficult maintenance on purpose? NOT exactly intentionally made only to be hard...However the bulk of engineering is to make assembly quick, easy and cheap, and last thru the warranty period. The entire (assembled) instrument panel is installed in < 1 minute. Just wait till you have to replace the ABS module on one of these Fusions, the engine needs to come out.. I had a (former) Ford engineer work for me.. he proposed a change to the ABS location to make it more serviceable. The change was denied because it would add almost 2 minutes to the assembly, AND based on maintenance data there were almost no warranty claims on the ABS module during the warranty period.. => If it fails 1 minute or 1 mile after the warranty period, Ford does not care. I have a friend w/ a Fusion, needs this exact (mode actuator) repair.. (79K miles => not FORDS problem), we'll do it as soon as he has the part and time (before winter I hope for him) . (BTW THANX FOR POSTING THE VIDEO) I have done the same work on an '02 Explorer and a 2013 F150..The old vacuum or wire driven dampers lasted pretty much forever. These modules last just long enough to clear warranty.

  • @danlford
    @danlford 2 года назад

    What fuse relates to the mode door actuator? I left my lights on and got a jump off. Every thing was working fine before that .now the air conditioning will only blow from the defrost and floor. I figured I blew a fuse but cant find which one it is on the diagram.

    • @GreatLakesJunction
      @GreatLakesJunction  2 года назад

      There is no specific fuse mentioned for this. However there are 3 different actuator motors in the system. 1 to blend the temperature, 1 to recirculate the air, and the 1 to change the vents.
      I would try changing the temp. and see if that function works, if it does I think its just coincidence this happened when the battery was boosted. Most likely the actuator motor is not working for the vents.

    • @danlford
      @danlford 2 года назад

      @@GreatLakesJunction yeah definitely not the blend actuator. It will blow cold and hot.
      Huge coincidence because it was working fine that morning on the way to work ,then it wasnt after the jump. And of course it's the hardest one to get to if it is the mode actuator. Just my luck.

      @grampymeyer6603 2 года назад

      For the record I do not own this vintage Fusion, However I do own a similar vintage F150, and previous vintage (2010) Milan. I have the wiring diagram (manuals) for both, and a previously owned (2002) Explorer. The power to ALL the actuators is 5VDC and comes from the DATC (dual automatic temperature controller) module, or the EMTC (electronic manual temperature controller). Therefore the fuse that supplies the "actuators" also supplies the "controller". The fuse is likely in the "Smart Junction Box" and likely labeled something like HVAC EMTC or HVAC DATC. That all said these are electronic gizmos, It is hypothetically possible, but unlikely a voltage spike caused our issue.

    Have a 2011 Fusion SE, deleted out some old trouble codes to do with the purge canister valve, with my XTool A30M scan tool and now non of the three actuators will work when you push the buttons on the Climate Control on dash. The power button works also all four blower speeds and AC works, can't change temp (stuck on high heat), mode door stuck on panel vents, recirculating door stuck on fresh air. Yet when I turn ignition on to ACC all three actuator doors move through two complete cycles during the test before starting engine. Had car into Ford Dealer and they updated firmware and reprogrammed the computer inside of Climate Control Module and that did not help, replace Climate Control Module from salvage yard and that did not work.
