Ben and Gwen's relationship was so well done in the original series. They start off as hostile but as the series progresses, their banter becomes less mean spirited until they start to appreciate each other and end the series with becoming best friends.
@@darthdracul8372I think they were pretty mature towards each other in alien force, they acted like siblings not their younger selfs taunting each other, but in UA, Ben somehow became immature and cocky, so Gwen tried keeping him in check.
@@darthdracul8372 it depends on the situation. Ben has a brain to reflect (see in Prince Simian, Paradox, Greetings from Techandon, Perplexahedron), knows how to behave and invent something to save people from an immediate danger. @@Nameless82284 I think it's also because they thought neither had anything in common. Ben thought Gwen was a buzzkill and only cared about boring stuff like school and math. Gwen thought Ben was immature and only cared about goofing off. But the more they got to know each other the more they realized there was more to them then that and had some of the same interests
If we wanna be honest, having two cousins as protagonists in a show isn't a very common thing. I barely remember another cartoon other than this and Scooby Doo(1970s era and even that's for certain episodes) that pairs cousins like this.
Nothing like a summer vacation full of adventure and danger to turn two hostile cousins (especially if some of those extreme trivia cards are to hold any weight, seriously augments that canceled family trips together before the start of the series) into siblings who have each other’s backs while still doing banter with each other. 01:33 to be fair Gwen perfectly understands what Ben is saying as Wildmutt so that’s gotta be their twin communication going on here. Despite them being cousins but still.
The reboot definitely removed a lot of the anger from their early relationship and replaces it with the light hearted banter they tended to have in shows like alien force or ultimate alien and it definitely is nice sometimes but I think it adds to the relationship and conflict to have these two cousins who have been forced so near to each other they hate each other deeply (as far as a ten year olds hate goes for a family member relatively speaking) and they have to learn to get around that as they’re placed in life or death situations and learn how much they actually value each other. Like everything in the reboot they made it lighter, fluffier, and defanged it a bit. Which is certainly nice for the days you want to turn your brain off and just enjoy the wholesome vibes but there’s certainly a lack of depth in my opinion.
@@Awesomeferret10I think that the ideal dynamic for Ben and Gwen as kids would be a middle-ground between the original series and the reboot. The reboot may have taken too much away of their rivalry and bickering (which made all of their nice supportive moments more special and worth treasuring in the original series), but I also feel the original series had them bickering too much at times for no reason. It sometimes felt like the writing for them was "if in doubt about what to write for Ben and Gwen in a scene or full episode, just make them bicker for something very petty, even when contradicting past episodes that showcased that their relationship evolved, that they should be better than this by now, that they are more empathetic to each other than this". Sometimes it gets bad to the point of the characters feeling amnesiac. Like when Gwen complained that Ben wouldn’t be able to make a sacrifice for anyone else in the film Secret Of The Omnitrix, even though Ben had already proved himself a few times that he was willing to sacrifice himself for Gwen and Max in previous episodes, and Gwen sincerely praised him and felt moved in those occasions!
Big agree! Gwen and Ben having a better relationship as kids is something I'm really glad the reboot did. We'll always have the OG series but I'm happier with the reboot series because it reflects my relationship with my cousins when I was that age. It's just really nice to see them getting along right off the bat with or without the original series in mind.

I think one of my favorite plotlines was when the ghost alien (lowkey ashamed that I can't remember his name) got out of the Omnitrix, it opened up so many questions. It's been over a decade since I watched any of the episodes in the first series so I don't remember the actual reason now but I remember always thinking, why would Azmuth choose to place actual alien consciousness' inside the Omnitrix? It was like a cruel and unusual punishment, now that I'm 26 it's kinda messed up you know? Imagine being stuck inside an alien watch and your body transforming into a human child while being used to fight crime without your mind even being able to go with it when you do get chosen to transform into
So interestingly that alien was Ghostfreak/Zs'Skayr who is a Ectonurite. His consciousness was not placed inside the watch but rather when the dna of an ectonurite is isolated it can essentially grow another conscious ectonurite since their personality is stored in the Dna since they aren’t living beings in the conventional sense if I remember correctly. So ghostfreak is just a blank template for Ben’s personality to impose on like every other alien in the watch but within ghostfreaks form the separate conscious of Zs'Skayr exists and he’s able to slowly gain more control in the original show until he breaks out. I have no idea why azmuth whos supposedly super smart would take dna from an ectonurite honestly. After Zs'Skayr breaks free and Ben regains ghostfreak in later instances it just uses his dna with essentially a mock ectonurite dna so it doesn’t form any other copies of Zs'Skayr. It’s possible the watch malfunctioned like seen in alien force and accidentally took Zs'Skayr’s dna and created a clone. But yeah that episode of the og freaked me out a ton as a kid because he felt like one of the most legitimate threats the show had ever had and I loved how scary and high stakes it felt. Even rewatching it, knowing it was a kids show and they wouldn’t do anything to the ten year old the stakes still felt very real.
