If you don't want the edges of your panels to get smudged, you could pound in a very thin nail into the ledge portion of the panel holder, so that the point just poked through the other side. one nail per corner would be enough. These 4 tiny points of contact for the panel to rest on would almost fully eliminate the smudging. 8 nails total, 4 on each side poking through to the opposite side and neither panel will come in contact with the wooden ledge. Would be a good idea to pre-drill holes to minimize risk of splitting the wood.
This is such a great setup for quick oil sketches just to capture the essence of a scene. That is something I finally come to realize is just do oil sketches and not complete paintings. I used the Guerilla 5 x 7 pochade box. It's basically a carryall. It can hold two 5 x 7 panels, 4 colors, small container of Gamsol and brushes fitted for that box. I'm planning to carry just the water mixable oils, so that I don't have to worry about Gamsol.

Yes! Personally, I really love oils, but when I was getting started with plein air painting, I used acrylic gouache. I found the quick drying time and the easy clean-up to be super convenient.
This is wonderful. I just wish I could only take a few things. Unfortunately, I take everything it the kitchen sink. Hoping that I will improve the more I do it. Thanks for sharing.

Oh nice! I’ve heard of the Guerilla one but haven’t tried it myself.

Gouache is so much easier for plein air. I'd love to hear your thoughts on painting with it.

Haha I understand! This is what I take when I'm traveling by plane, but if I'm going by car and have more space, I bring more stuff too.
Cool kit!
Thank you!
