You have a hard time imagining because nothing is happening. These people are con-artists, or have simply convinced themselves. Most aquifers are horizontal so, if there’s water in that area, you’ll hit it anywhere if you go deep enough. My well in the Rocky Mountains is a vertical tube aquifer. It’s been producing for 40+ years. It was easy to locate the water because it fed a spring

Honestly, it's probably a more solid career move than building MODFLOW/FEFLOW models. Engineering consulting is just the worst. The majority of our clients are morally bankrupt, and thanks to liability insurance, our low profitability means we have to take whatever we can get.
You can do the same thing with welding rods just knock off the Flux bend at an angle at one end and gently hold in your palm walk until they cross and then you got water.
Try taking 2. 2ft pieces of stripped 12guage copper wire and bend 1 end of each in a 45 degree angle. About 6 inches from one end hold the wire like holding a pistol hold arms straight out ahead of your body keep hands about a ft apart then walk slowly across an existing waterline and the 2 wires will come together and form a cross right above the water line that works and will prove to you that it is possible

I don't have a lot of experience with this, but I was taught this by my cousins down in Mexico. They would find a Y shape in the branches of one of the plants growing nearby. Break the Y shape off, taking all the leaves and other stems off. Then, you have to flip the Y upside down, holding the 2 ends in your hands. BUT - you have to slightly bend them outwards, to create a mild tension between the 2 sides. Just hold it steady, and walk along. And, at a certain point - the stalk of the Y shaped branch will just droop down on its own. Right where it does, it points to the spot that you can't drill a well for ground water. I wasn't sure if any tree or bush would work - but. When I got back home, I tried it with whatever plant I could find the Y shape in the branches... and, it worked. So, just try any old tree with the Y shape. And, have fun!!
My friend from church can do it, and he says it only works for him and his dad if they use a fresh branch, it can't be old and dry. His dad can only use willow wood, but he can use a few different woods. I have no idea why it works the way it does, but he suspects it has something to do with how your body interacts with the electromagnetic field of the earth itself. I'm no scientist though so I really can't say. Interesting phenomenon regardless of if it actually finds water or not.

I live in Southeast Ohio. I used green (freshly cut) willow, shaped the same way this man's stick was. I chose willow because a few old-timer Appalachians around here said that's what I should use. I think it is because willow is a water-loving tree... it grows where the ground is wet, like next to my pond. My wife and I both used this same technique, having never done it before, to locate the exact location of a known covered well on my property. It worked for both of us in the same exact spot, which is right where the last property owner told us the well is. We haven't dug up the ground yet to uncover the top of the capped-off well casing and confirm our findings, but I have a lot of confidence that its right there. My grandmother used to do this, although I never watched her do it. I just know that every once in a while someone would call her to come find water on their land, and she always got excited about it. Sha had a great reputation among the farmers for always finding water. She used green Y-shaped branches that she would cut off of our apple trees.
I doused for water on some land before I purchased it back in 2011. I didn’t want to buy it if I couldn’t find water. Also had another guy who I knew could find water by dowsing and had him verify my findings without telling him. We both had the same results. I personally use two different methods. One method to find the vein (L shaped copper rods)and another 4’-5’ green hazel brush stick held by the top) to find depth. I find the vein or veins and mark out the directions on the ground as well as the width of the veins with the L-shaped rods first. After those are all marked out, I find a straight green hazel brush and cut it down. It’s usually about 1-2”-5/8” diameter at the base and about 3/16-1/4” at the top. The stick is about 4-5’ long and I hold it by the top and the butt end of the stick is held perpendicular to me straight out ahead. The top goes under my pinky finger and hands facing up and it lays across the other 3 fingers to support it from bending too much or too easily. I don’t grip it hard and very lightly hold it perpendicular to the vein with the butt of the stick about 1-2’ off the ground over the center of the vein. I stand very still and it’s best when no wind is present. You don’t want the wind messing up the bouncing that comes with the stick. After a few moments the stick will usually create a slight back and forth motion which slowly turns into an oval pattern which very definitively transitions to an up and down bounce. It’s at this first bounce I start counting the bounces. Every bounce is 1’ of depth. The vein on my land had a continual bounce to a depth of 32’ (33 bounces minus 1’ of stick height). At the end of the 33 bounces, the stick would rather rapidly transition to the back and forth motion and then back into the up and down Bounce. Again, at the first bounce up and down I start over counting again and the number would continually come back at 33 bounces literally all day long. I waited until spring the following year to perform all the same tests to verify water depth and level and veins to be sure from fall to spring the level would remain consistent. It did. Most I ever seen it change was it dropped to 33’ one year, but has remained at 32’ for 11 years. Keep in mind too that 32’ is the depth to the surface of the water from the surface of the ground. I held the stick 1’ off the ground when testing for depth, so I subtracted 1’. When I pounded my 2” pipe down I kept water in the pipe and when it hit 32’ it noticeably started driving much easier and within just a few inches of more pounding, all the water in the pipe disappeared into the ground through the 2” sand point which told me I was in water. When I finished pounding the case down, I dropped a 100’ tape measure down to check the actual depth and it was literally at 32’ to ground level just as I had found. After driving my well down to 45’ I decided to test it to see how it would handle the water flow with my jet pump. I pumped out over 5,000 gallons during the course of 16 hours to test the well before assuming it was going to work and not dry up. 11 years later and I’ve never once sucked air or ran out of water. At that same time I found another couple veins on my property but they were 86’ down and didn’t feel like driving a pipe that deep. I’ll be checking those again to see if they are still there or not.

The horizontal part of the L was only about 6-8” long and the vertical part of the “L” which points out ahead of you and slightly down towards the ground, we’re about 18” or so. I just very loosely hold them and keep them tilted towards the ground so the pull the underground vein has to be strong enough to pull them “uphill” as they move. Yes, from what I’ve found, a vein is water moving underground usually from a higher point to a lower point. The lake I live next to is at the closest 580’ to a Bay Area to my north and to the west it is about 1,000’. I sit abut 60-70’ above the lake, so I’m guessing the underground vein is making its way to the lake.
I used to think this was hocus-pocus til watching an old guy called in to do this in the middle of a field to be planted in vegetables. Yes this works 100% if you know what you are doing and how to hold the stick or rods properly. I knew an old man who could tell you how deep the water was and get it within a foot and also which stream of underground water had the most flow on your property. The worse trouble where we live is the different types of water you could end up drilling for. One area could be good limestone filtered water but just one field over coud be sulfur or iron water. Luckily on our farm is the limestone but just 1/4 mile up the road it turns to sulfur.
This is completely false and not at all how groundwater works . Absolutely zero confirmed evidence for this practice exists beyond anecdotal stories, and every time scientists have designed a controlled experiment to study it, the so-called "professional" dowsers have never demonstrated a statistically significant ability to guess correctly - literally not once. In other words their results were the same as someone who was just blindly guessing. Groundwater doesn't usually flow in discrete "veins" like underground rivers, it's more analogous to taking a bucket of dry sand and then filling it part way with water - the water flows throughout the entire medium and so no matter where you stick the rod, you're probably going to encounter water.

To reiterate, there has _never_ been a single experiment in which dowsers were able to locate water with any degree of accuracy. My guess is you could drill anywhere on that property and hit water. It seems the assumption is that water is located in one little spot that you have to find. It's likely that the man with the stick evaluated the property visually decided where the best place for water to be located and then put pressure on the rod so that it would spring downward with just a little hand movement probably psychologically moving the stick to where he had already contemplated he wanted it to be. Remind me of a fortune teller. This is absolutely illogical from any scientific standpoint. I remember reading a long time ago that the stick is drawn to the water because it's made of wood. Lol.
We've done hundreds of studies (oil people invested a lot of money doing theirs as well) with THE BEST dowsers/diviners in the world walking around with their devices, as many times as they want, over terrain under which there is natural flow of water (or oil for those that do that). They do their thing, each has its own method, as long as they need, and they mark the spots. Then reviewers outside the experiment analyze the predictions against the paths of water and clearly conclude that the closest predictions do NO BETTER than pure chance. Pyschological studies have explained it very easily: we never forget a hit but forget or excuse away all the misses; as simple as many other superstitious beliefs, it's deceptingly easy to fool oneself.

I know this works. You can also use this method to find electrical conduit that’s been buried under concrete. The conduit will fill with rain water from rain storm and then you can get a relative location of the buried electrical conduit that was buried under the concrete pour.

I stand very still and it’s best when no wind is present. You don’t want the wind messing up the bouncing that comes with the stick. After a few moments the stick will usually create a slight back and forth motion which slowly turns into an oval pattern which very definitively transitions to an up and down bounce. It’s at this first bounce I start counting the bounces. Every bounce is 1’ of depth. The vein on my land had a continual bounce to a depth of 32’ (33 bounces minus 1’ of stick height). At the end of the 33 bounces, the stick would rather rapidly transition to the back and forth motion and then back into the up and down Bounce. Again, at the first bounce up and down I start over counting again and the number would continually come back at 33 bounces literally all day long. I waited until spring the following year to perform all the same tests to verify water depth and level and veins to be sure from fall to spring the level would remain consistent. It did. Most I ever seen it change was it dropped to 33’ one year, but has remained at 32’ for 11 years. Keep in mind too that 32’ is the depth to the surface of the water from the surface of the ground. I held the stick 1’ off the ground when testing for depth, so I subtracted 1’. When I pounded my 2” pipe down I kept water in the pipe and when it hit 32’ it noticeably started driving much easier and within just a few inches of more pounding, all the water in the pipe disappeared into the ground through the 2” sand point which told me I was in water. When I finished pounding the case down, I dropped a 100’ tape measure down to check the actual depth and it was literally at 32’ to ground level just as I had found.
After driving my well down to 45’ I decided to test it to see how it would handle the water flow with my jet pump. I pumped out over 5,000 gallons during the course of 16 hours to test the well before assuming it was going to work and not dry up. 11 years later and I’ve never once sucked air or ran out of water. At that same time I found another couple veins on my property but they were 86’ down and didn’t feel like driving a pipe that deep. I’ll be checking those again to see if they are still there or not.

Does the vein mean a vein of the water that's flowing underground? Also if you can tell me what you used to find the water..I couldn't quite get what you meant in the beginning of your comment. Can I just use any L or V shape branch?
@@Giggidyflanders I used just some metal coat hangers that I straightened out and bent into an “L” shape. The horizontal part of the L was only about 6-8” long and the vertical part of the “L” which points out ahead of you and slightly down towards the ground, we’re about 18” or so. I just very loosely hold them and keep them tilted towards the ground so the pull the underground vein has to be strong enough to pull them “uphill” as they move.
Yes, from what I’ve found, a vein is water moving underground usually from a higher point to a lower point. The lake I live next to is at the closest 580’ to a Bay Area to my north and to the west it is about 1,000’. I sit abut 60-70’ above the lake, so I’m guessing the underground vein is making its way to the lake.

I used to think this was hocus-pocus til watching an old guy called in to do this in the middle of a field to be planted in vegetables. We all thought this was lunacy as we snickered and laughed at the owner who paid for this, as we watched the old douser walk around with his funky stick and paint orange X's on the dirt, til a well driller came in and said "if that old guy says there's water there, it's there. And it won't be, ten feet away from there." Darned if they didn't hit the water, right where he said it'd be. That was about forty years ago.
Yes this works 100% if you know what you are doing and how to hold the stick or rods properly. I knew an old man who could tell you how deep the water was and get it within a foot and also which stream of underground water had the most flow on your property. The worse trouble where we live is the different types of water you could end up drilling for. One area could be good limestone filtered water but just one field over coud be sulfur or iron water. Luckily on our farm is the limestone but just 1/4 mile up the road it turns to sulfur.
This is completely false and not at all how groundwater works . Absolutely zero confirmed evidence for this practice exists beyond anecdotal stories, and every time scientists have designed a controlled experiment to study it, the so-called "professional" dowsers have never demonstrated a statistically significant ability to guess correctly - literally not once. In other words their results were the same as someone who was just blindly guessing. Groundwater doesn't usually flow in discrete "veins" like underground rivers, it's more analogous to taking a bucket of dry sand and then filling it part way with water - the water flows throughout the entire medium and so no matter where you stick the rod, you're probably going to encounter water.

I have proof have seen it done and know it works. Your science is crap. My dad was a underground miner for 30 years and has seen how the water flows. Water is not everywhere!! You can move over just a few feet and miss a well completely!! Yes water is in veins/streams and in mass pools underground! Water that is so called everywhere as you say is in small amounts from seeping through is not enough to support a "well". The just drill a hole method is a shot in the dark with limited success. I've seen helium balloons suspended in the air without falling, but that does not constitute scientific proof that gravity does not exist lol. First-person observations are not a substitute for controlled experimental conditions where all other variables other than the one you are testing have been eliminated.
To reiterate, there has _never_ been a single experiment in which dowsers were able to locate water with any degree of accuracy. That's not to say they haven't tried - there have been several of these experiments to my my knowledge. But not one of them demonstrated that dowsing was any more effective than just blindly guessing. If you wish to continue believing in this method despite all evidence to the contrary that is fine, but please do not refer to it as "science" because that is not how the scientific method works lol.

My guess is you could drill anywhere on that property and hit water. It seems the assumption is that water is located in one little spot that you have to find. It's likely that the man with the stick evaluated the property visually decided where the best place for water to be located and then put pressure on the rod so that it would spring downward with just a little hand movement probably psychologically moving the stick to where he had already contemplated he wanted it to be. Remind me of a fortune teller. This is absolutely illogical from any scientific standpoint. I remember reading a long time ago that the stick is drawn to the water because it's made of wood. Lol.

We've done hundreds of studies (oil people invested a lot of money doing theirs as well) with THE BEST dowsers/diviners in the world walking around with their devices, as many times as they want, over terrain under which there is natural flow of water (or oil for those that do that).
They do their thing, each has its own method, as long as they need, and they mark the spots. Then reviewers outside the experiment analyze the predictions against the paths of water and clearly conclude that the closest predictions do NO BETTER than pure chance. Pyschological studies have explained it very easily: we never forget a hit but forget or excuse away all the misses; as simple as many other superstitious beliefs, it's deceptingly easy to fool oneself.

I know this works. You can also use this method to find electrical conduit that’s been buried under concrete. The conduit will fill with rain water from rain storm and then you can get a relative location of the buried electrical conduit that was buried under the concrete pour.
