Story behind the whistle at the end - apparently, he was recording an album, and they recorded this song. However, he hadn’t actually finished the lyrics, so he whistled at the end to fill something in, until he could finish the song, after which he’d come back and record the finished version. Unfortunately, he died before he could finish it, and now that whistle is one of the most recognizable pieces of music ever.
Also, I agree with others - check out “Try A Little Tenderness”, which is probably my favourite Otis song!

    • @charlessalzman4377

Wow, I did not know that. At first I thought this was going to be like the "Where do we go" from Sweet Child of Mine. Where they didn't have the lyrics yet and just through in filler "Where do we go, where do we go now" literally in the song because they didn't know where to take it at that point. But worked so well they left it in.
His death puts a more somber note on the whistle.
Kind of like the Roy Orbison video for "You Got it" video placed on a waving piece of cloth because he died before they could make the video. They had concert footage but it was grainy so they figured out how to make that not a factor.
      Thanks for the commentary.

The co-writer of this song just like many other Otis songs is guitarist Steve Cropper. In a documentary i saw he said that Otis called him in the middle of the night and said this song will be my first #1 hit! Steve said "yeah, ok man let's talk about it tomorrow!" Otis was right it did reach #1 but unfortunately he never got to experience it since he died in a plane chrash before it was released. Another kinda bittersweet story about this song is the horn players were supposed to have joined Otis on that plane..
However in the last minute they had to cancel the flight cause they were ordered to do horn overdubs in the studio on this song.

He told them he wrote about what he felt and he loved it so he wanted to release it. Still a classic song today. Proof you should be sincere in your songwriting and don't let others tell you what your 'sound' is.

@@Lilith6416 Thanks, you too. I'm in the North Hill area so flooding was not a problem but tremendous tree damage. I have 2 small trees on my van but that's not a big deal compared to the rest of our battered little town. Have friends and family in Perdido. Some had to be rescued by boat, others on the Key had severe flooding and damage. Not Ivan but a serious hit.

Nell Pulaski I’m in the Beulah area so we don’t get flooding either. A lot of wind and down trees. A few of my neighbors had bad tree damage. Luckily I’m a scaredy-cat and had the trees around my house removed after Ivan.
Since my daughter and family moved out I’ve been alone. I have enjoyed their videos it is just like they are here and we are all listening to records like when I was young. I love the OWL club. I would be honored if I can become a member. I enjoyed their live bday party last night. I was however surprised by some mean and immature comments But like always the twins were complete gentlemen and handled it.
I bow to their mom she has to be one amazing women. She raised some very respectful, intelligent young men. I had one and she’s crazy. Lol.
