One line from the Japanese cut of the movie that really got my attention is the part where they strait up said that Godzilla is super sensitive to bright lights because they remind him of the atomic bomb
Yeah apparently Showa era Godzilla canonically has PTSD

Godzilla Raids Again was almost turned into a different movie called the Volcano Monsters. A US Production Company was going to take Special Effects footage from the second Godzilla film, and build an entirely new story around it. It was going to be about exploroers who discover the Preserved Bodies of Two Dinosaurs(Godzilla & Anguirus). They transport them back to Civilization, and somehow, the two Creatures come back to life. They escape and have a battle in a nearby Chinatown(which would've explained the Asian setting in the film). Toho even shipped over two Godzilla and Anguirus Costumes that were going to be used to film additional shots for the movie. Eventually the Project got shelved and we got a dubbed version of Godzilla Raids Again, instead. As bad as the American version of Godzilla Raids Again is(or Gigantis the Fire Monster, as It's also called), the re-edited, butchered version might've even been worse.

The title card Godzlla Raids Again actually wasn't used in the American cut until the 2006 DVD, although the 1988 VHS release was titled Godzilla Raids Again, the title card on the actual movie still read Gigantis, the Fire Monster.

I remember seeing Gigantis at a theatre back in the early sixties. It was on a double bill with Teenagers From Outer Space. So far as I know, it was never shown on TV nor released on VHS or DVD. I was finally able to get the original, Godzilla Raids Again, on DVD sometime in the twenty-teens. The version I bought did not include the American edition, so all that remains to me of Gigantis is a handful of sixty-year-old memories. In the meantime, I did find a DVD of Teenagers from Outer Space, so that hot sixties summer afternoon is not lost to me entirely.

Great video. When I was a little kid these movies were long out of theaters, but it was before the age of VHS. This was one of the very few Showa Godzilla films I never saw broadcast on local TV. Never knew it existed until I picked up the VHS release in the 1980s. It is a strange film in the series; much stranger in the American dub, but I find both versions have an unusual tone and somewhat odd-looking monster sequences. It is interesting, for sure, but I would not consider either version a strong Godzilla entry. More of a curiosity.

PS I doubt it was changed to not be a sequel for the reason that American movies didn't do sequels much at the time. Hollywood was famously already sequel crazy, a good example are the Universal monster movies featuring Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolfman, even the Creature from the Black Lagoon had 2 sequels. Curious that they changed it at all really.

For some reason this was one of my favourite Godzilla movies as a kid (keep in mind I did not grow up watching Godzilla as VHS dubs, I was able to, well, get them off the internet in their original forms). Maybe it was the main theme, or the fact that Anguirus is a Very Cool™ monster, or the suit for whatever reason(???). Not really sure why, looking back it's actually rather crap.
The suit is indeed very creepy as Gojiwars says. Doesn't help that we know very little about the suit itself in terms of promo pictures (plenty of high quality promo pictures for ShodaiGoji & KingGoji, not many for GyakushuGoji. I don't think it helps that the incredible sense of scale seen in Gojira is pretty much gone from this film, and that the suit itself is barely seen in close-up, where we get instead that godawful mechanical handpuppet from the first movie. I'm probably coming off as a bit blunt to fans of the film, sorry about that lol. There's a decent picture of Godzilla in the iceberg island thing, and he's just standing there, looking rather creepy with his skinny arms and misshapen head.
What I'm trying to say is that the film is unfortunately inbetween Gojira and KKvG, and so not much fan attention is drawn to finding knowledge about behind the scenes/translating any books about GRA, that is if there even are any to be found.
Sorry for the mini essay lol, and if the channel owner is reading this and wondering why I've been leaving several long comments in previous videos it's not because I'm trying to get your attention, honest :p
