      @andrepinto7895 5 лет назад +7

@ please attend to the meaning of the word "originally". The fact that England is part of the UK at the moment, and the UK accepted this alliance, doesn't mean that the oldest alliance involved a country that didn't exist at the time.
The Dutch-Portuguese war occurred while Portugal was under a dynastic union with Spain, i.e. the Portuguese territories and forces were used by the Spanish (and later Portuguese) king to defend Spanish interests. Spanish was at war with the Dutch, so guess what happened to Portugal? Also, guess what happened to England''s involvement in the war when Portugal became independent again in 1640? Right... And you wouldn't even need to look at a proxy war with the Dutch to see a conflict in this particular context. Look up "Spanish Armada" and see what are the forces at play.
The biggest diplomatic issue between the countries as independent nations was the Pink Map crisis (didn't produce a war).
It is, indeed, a full blown alliance. And the oldest still in place.
"[t]here shall be between the respective kings and their successors, their realms, lands, dominions, provinces, vassals, and subjects whomsoever, faithfully obeying, true, faithful, constant, mutual, and perpetual friendships [Amicitae], unions [Adunationes], alliances [Alligantiae], and leagues of sincere affection [purae Dilectionis foedera]; and that, as true and faithful princes, they shall henceforth reciprocally be friends to friends and enemies to enemies, and shall assist, maintain, and uphold each other mutually, by sea and by land, against all men that may live or die of whatever degree, station, rank, or condition they may be, and against their lands, realms, and dominions." - 1373
"It is cordially agreed that if, in time to come, one of the kings or his heir shall need the support of the other, or his help, and in order to get such assistance applies to his ally in lawful manner, the ally shall be bound to give aid and succour to the other, so far as he is able (without any deceit, fraud, or pretence) to the extent required by the danger to his ally’s realms, lands, domains, and subjects; and he shall be firmly bound by these present alliances to do this." - 1386

In matter of fact England (GB) DID "invade" Sweden once.
During the Napoleonic wars Napoleon demanded Sweden to declare war on Great Britain or else he would invade Sweden. Sweden declared war and hoped for the best, with no real intention of fighting. Great Britain used this as an excuse to "invade" and occupy an uninhabited island in the Blekinge archipelago and used it to store material needed for their Baltic armada.

PUSB 96 Not really, British people never invaded the lands that were previously polish - and most of them were taken by Soviets. If anything help that was aided to Britain, by polish people in WW2 - on the actual british territory and with those standards could be counted as polish invasion on Britain. But then again with twisted rules like that almost every bigger country could tell they invaded at least half of the world at some time.

    • @mjm3091
      @mjm3091 6 лет назад +13

Mazovian Mapping I think he was referring to that Britain fought Germany when Nazis did occupied some of the polish lands. Still as I said - it can't be fully counted as Poland was mostly invaded by Soviets (as it had different shape than today).
Also invading one country doesn't make you invade countries that are also invaded at a time, but the country you invade. British people never fought on polish lands and Poland still was a country through the whole war - occupied and divided, but still was a country.
Also through whole history British people did not help Poland with "helpful" invasion as that is what probably video is trying to imply, but actually the only thing they did was to loan some money (a lot less that Poland needed) and then again if we count borrowing money as invasion - pretty much almost everybody could tell they invaded half of the world.
On the other hand there were polish soldiers in Britain fighting in WW2 - which by standards of the book mentioned in video and by video itself means that Poland invaded Britain in WW2.

Basically the portuguese royal family fled to Brazil turning it into a Kingdom and making Rio de Janeiro the capital of the Portuguese Empire for the time being. Being portuguese allies, the british fought against the french. For some reason though, they stay in Portugal and ended up controling mainland Portugal for a decade under the rulling of General Beresford in a ruthless dictatorship like regime!

@MrKingdig Wrong. Portugal’s neutrality in the context of the Napoleonic Wars ended after the refusal of Portugal to enter the Continental System (a), being the sole European Kingdom do to so. This refusal of Portugal has two reasons, being the first the volume of the trading relations between Portugal and Britain, and the second the terms of the Treaty of Windsor of 1386 and the supplementary reassurances of mutual assistance against France signed in 1793 (b). For Portugal the consequences of honoring it’s alliance with Britain were absolutely catastrophic. A quarter of a million Portuguese citizens perished in the War (or 8% of the population, averaging the losses of Germany in WW2), the scorched earth policy caused the destruction of the center of the country, Brasil was lost as a direct consequence of this war, followed by a Civil War. The relocation of the Crown and Court to Brasil ensued no surrendering was possible, being this a daring and unprecedent move for that age. Hope you can see the sacrifice Portugal did in order to honor it’s word.

I neither was talking about Anglo-Portuguese alliance, nor about the details of it, or even the reason for why Portugal was invaded in the first place.
I was talking instead about the fact that mainland Portugal was under the control of William Carr Beresford who was apointed as a military leader of the portuguese army in order to defend Portugal replacing General Wellesley. When the Napoleonic wars came to an end, he was technically controling Portugal, not only militarily, but also, politicaly. That's what I was saying. In any way I spoke about Portugal's neutrality, I only shared the fact that, for a short decade, the British did indeed own Portugal as a Protectorate.
My main source for this statement is a 11th grade portuguese history textbook "Um novo tempo da História" -Módulo 5 (2º Volume).

During the First World War, Serbia was invaded and conquered by Germany, Bulgaria and Austria-Hungary.
Britain, as Serbia’s ally, sent troops to help them. They eventually managed to fight their way onto Serbian territory alongside the Serbo-French army, and drove out the occupying Central Powers forces. You can call that an ‘invasion’ technically, though to the Serbs themselves it was a liberation.
    So Britain never invaded Serbia.

Exactly, liberation and invasion are two different things. An Invasion is an aggressive military offensive carried out in order to conquer an opposing army or territory and is done for personal gain. Liberation is supporting the free will of the majority of people living under oppression and unjust rule and freeing them from that oppression, even if it means using military intervention.

If you're curious about "British cooking is bad" a lot comes down to the fact that ww2 rationing basically stripped all the luxury goods from the common people, so only a few dishes would survive.
So when the allied nations would drop their soldiers/airmen off there they would be stuck eating rationing style food and thus the stereotype stuck.

It's nice to see this comment section being friendly and having a laugh like the British do well. I think sometimes RUclips can be pretty hateful about these touchy topics. The British just were the main empire back then and sadly that's how empires go. Every empire in the history of humanity were evil and committed evilness. The British were just better at it, and in all fairness, did a lot more good than harm. That's not saying they were innocent but that's just how history plays out. You become powerful, invade countries, do some evilness, and return back to your usual self. Maybe there's a reason why villains tend to be played by the British or tend to have British accents in movies? 😂

I seem to recall reading about the British invasion of Iceland. As I recall the British ship sailed up to the dock, and a large crowd of Icelanders gathered to watch it arrive. After some deliberation on board, the British captain called down to the crowd to ask who was in charge, and if they could please move the crowd back a bit so that the British troops could disembark.

REST OF WORLD: Oh really, how so?
BRITAIN: Well......it was the weekend, we were messing around in our boats, things got a bit out of hand and um ..........we sort of ended up invading you. Oooops, sorry about that.
REST OF WORLD: Yeah well screw you Britain
BRITAIN: Oh come on, we're all friends now......right?
REST OF WORLD: Screw you * 2
BRITAIN: It actually wasn't us! It was the Americans!
REST OF WORLD: BS! They didn't even exist (much) at the time - nice try though
BRITAIN: Damn, that normally works! Oh, um, errrr.......the French made us do it?
REST OF WORLD: You expect us to believe that?
BRITAIN: Alright alright, yeah we did it. How about we give you a pork pie, a Scotch egg, a Cornish pastie, lots of great music, Newtonian laws of motion, the complete works of William Shakespeare and the industrial revolution........can we be friends now?
REST OF WORLD: Hmmmmmmm, oh alright then.
REST OF WORLD: Right then, now we're friends we're all coming round to visit
BRITAIN: Oh sh*t.......the house is a bit small
REST OF WORLD: Never mind that.

anaknipara The British had bigger fish to fry at the time. I don’t think an overall occupation was actually desired, only consequential. They won the battle, Manilla was just the trophy.
