  • People with atrial fibrillation (Afib) have up to 5 times greater risk for stroke than other adults. During Afib, the atria aren’t moving properly, which slows blood flow and allows blood clots to form in the heart. These clots can then break loose and travel to the brain causing stroke. Dr. Steven Filby of University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute reviews this risk and the latest treatment options, including an innovative minimally invasive procedure called left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) that works as an alternative to long-term blood thinners for some patients.
