    Yep to all of these. After a while, especially with flashier cosplays, we just gotta assume people will stare, ask questions or say unexpected stuff, sometimes take pictures with their phones, and well, we gotta live with it. I try to do photoshoots early to avoid bigger crowds too, especially at touristic spots, big parks, gardens and such. I got some nice stories from shooting in public, more than bad ones.

      I have a service dog so I'm already used to people staring, asking dumbass questions, taking pictures and saying the most unhinged shit ever. I guess I'm already prepared to cosplay in public now LMAO. My service dog is retiring soon and I should be getting a new prospect this year, I found a good breeder that does health testing, training, socialization, training and temperament testing. The breeder breeds golden retrievers for service dogs, the top two puppies go to a two week training camp in Maine and she takes them out to do public access training. The dog I want is 5,500 dollars but she is DAMN worth it! I can't wait to get her and start training, then we can cosplay at conventions together. My current service dog has started to develop some anxiety in public which is normal since he's getting a bit old, he will be 6 this year, so I don't take him out in public much anymore. He's also not a fan of dressing up and every time I put something other than his harness on him, he stares at me like a sad and helpless Victorian child... He looks so sad... He gets over it if I have treats though.

    Honestly, "these people are all strangers I'm never going to see again and even if I do see them again the chances are low that they'd recognize me" does wonders for me. It's just a little bit of "hey these people are all randos, since when did I care about their opinion?"

    The Tipp to always have someone with you ist really important.
    I live in a Country where not so much people know what Cosplay is, so they are look at me even weirder when I'm out in Public. One's I was walking home, alone in my Chuuya Cosplay from bsd , and two random Guy's filmed me and called me "Wizard" while making fun of me. I felt really uncomfortable. Since then, I never walked alone in my Cosplay again, because this happened a few more times, but I don't felt uncomfortable with someone with me.
    All of the Tipps where very helpful, thank you! (and sorry for my bad English)

    My biggest pieces of advice is always have a friend with you, for directions and such.
    Don't drive, since I've seen so many people drive with Eva foam helmets and causing accidents, have somebody drive you or navigate you on the street.
    If at all possible, change at the location itself, since some people may not consider how expensive and fragile an outfit can be.
    Props should be locked in a case until the pics are in the process of being taken. Maybe call the police station and make sure what you're doing is OK, and also let's them know what is going on and know what to expect.
    Call locations first, or at least businesses in the area. They may offer washrooms to change and freshen up, may offer shoot locations, and also may prefer knowing what's going on and keep people calm since panic is so prevalent today. I know I've been called on going home with a few cans painted green before.
    All to say your advice was solid, but cover every base since people panic for nothing today

  • @historicalaccuracy15

    5:38 especially here in the US, last thing you want is someone thinking your prop is a real weapon. Even if it's some Karen flipping out over some obvious prop wizard's staff or something, things can be lost in communication and you might wind up with some jumpy cops pulling up and no one wants to deal with that.
    I'm not saying you can't have props or walk around with wands or something, but unfortunately with certain... Issues being the way they are you'd need to be really mindful of any and everything that might get misperceived for a split second. Not that it happens that often but people have been shot by cops thinking sprayer hoses or smartphones are guns, so I know I certainly wouldn't feel safe with no damn wand out around a cop.
    As far as prop guns go that's mostly a no brainer, but I will point out for anyone that insists on carrying them because it's an "open carry state anyway"... You're still gonna want to treat it like it was an actual gun anyway, which means you're not gonna want to ever be unholstering that thing

    Thanks for this video, I plan to go shop out of town while wearing a costume because I want to try something new. My costume is Anya Forger from Spy X Family. At least I don't have to think just because you're cosplaying, it doesn't mean you're going to an event or convention, you just want to travel in costume.

    We walked in a group of 4 genshin cosplayers on the way to a con and it was so fun! People in cars waved and smiled, an old couple took pictures and told us to go have a good day, we made some people smile and it was so much fun I almost liked it as much as the con itself!
    I wanna cosplay as Kainé but even with opaque tights I'm really afraid of being refused entry (to a con, I'd never cosplay her in public) or having the cops called on me because of the growing amount of kids at conventions and I wonder if she would really be too inapropriate (for reference I'm french not american so I have to gauge if it would be okay where I live) I mean she's practically in lingerie!

    • @gaymememachine5500
      @gaymememachine5500 Год назад

      Ask the event hosts if you’re unsure! I’ve seen plenty of Kainés at cons, although I’m American so it might be different over there. Definitely bring clothes to change into after the con is over if you’re unsure. You can always modify it to be less revealing as well, or choose an alternative outfit (like her Reincarnation one) instead. Hope this helps!

    I live in Germany and sometimes its really scary because a lot of people are disgusted by people who dressed different. So I make sure to be in public spaces. Even tho people are staring at me, im not scared to get attacked by some random person.

    • @claraf.6833
      @claraf.6833 6 месяцев назад +2

      I'm also a German, I didn't necessarily experience that so far. I've been to my fair share of conventions and had to walk to the venue fully dressed, one time I had to eat in a restaurant in full alien makeup and when I entered in a black bodysuit, painted blue with a latex mask on, people were clearly surprised, one person even asking "what is that?!" (I live in a small town, I think I'm the only cosplayer there lmao)
      My first time cosplaying I was going to a monthly anime and cosplay meetup in my home town, dressed in a Star Trek uniform, with Vulcan ears, a fitting wig and makeup on. I had to take a bus alone to the meetup spot (and back, obviously), it was awkward, especially when some guy on the bus loudly said "Hey look, it's Star Wars!". When I turned around and went "huh?" he asked "Where's Dark Vader and the white dudes?" 😂 I've never had anyone give me disgusted looks, make fun of me or harrass me though, thankfully!

    I personally love to go on public transport in cosplay. It amuses me to no end! It makes me generally more confident. I have not really had any real bad experiences from such. I go alone as I have no real friends but when other cosplayers get on the train in? Sometimes we sit together and make small talk etc. Which mostly comes naturally to me. Last year, I went in wearing my Hunter Cosplay (Star wars Bad Batch.) And so so many folks were amazed! :D I often wear headphones on the train so I have found that does minimize the stranger interactions a bit.. as does checking your phone etc. But again, I don't really mind the stares. I just stare right back half the time and it is an invitation for then to start a conversation with me if they'd like.. because they are obviously curious/intrigued by my appearance etc. :3
    I once got off the train at my local shopping centre on my way home from a con to get dinner (I was starving!) I walk through the front doors and scare the absolute pants off the cleaner who was busy mopping up the floors near said doors. (I was dressed as SSJ4 Goku.) I was in such shock and couldn't help but laugh.... I yelled out : "I ain't gonna eat you!! Please don't run and slip over on the freshly mopped floors!" :D
    Another time was when I forgot I was cosplaying R from Warm Bodies for a Zombie walk and had to go get my mother some tech from the local store. Everyone was off put or scared of me and I was wondering why I could not get any assistance in finding the items I needed to buy... hahaha!! Lordy!
    Then when I was dressed as Zero Kiryu on the train into the con, my bloody rose gun accidently fell out of my pocket as I stood up... An old woman who was sitting across from me got so so scared? She put her hands up and froze. Bless her soul!! I assured her that it was fake and that no harm would come to her. I have also had run ins with local drag queens who have commented on how confident I come off as etc. Everyone was cool with it and I had no one call security or the police. :) Same goes for my foam blasters for my Hunter cosplay. (one kept falling out.) I had no issues at all.
    This time around? I am portraying a female character (which is not really my go to at all.. I am more of a male character cosplayer.) It is an AU Cosplay that I designed myself... Lolita Pizza Waitress Chica from Five Nights At Freddy's... I am going to be slightly more on guard because of being a tad bit self conscious about my appearance (Mainly about getting hit on etc.) But I am single so maybe it may work in my favour! (in a non creepy ass way of course!) But I am sure I'll be fine. I have Carl the killer cupcake to scare them off with!~

    Honestly I have had fun with the whole "What are you doing, why are you dressed like that?" answer. My most favorite answer, I find... being a bit more out spoken as a person despite my social anxiety, is " I am a model, I make my own out fits based on multimedia characters and I am on my way to a photoshoot. Would you like to know about this character?" But thats because I love gushing about my craft. My point is though you can answer in any way you choose to. You could even say your an actor on your way to your next gig. If you want to give an answer have fun with it.

    Usually if I am cosplaying in public (even though I’m 12), I normally go as demon slayer characters like Nezuko, Rengoku, Giyu, and lots more. for me, I feel more comfortable doing it because where I go to to cosplay, there are sometimes other cosplayers around me, so I’m not so nervous. If I am with my parents or a trusted adult, sometimes there are cosplayers that are from the same show I am. I feel comfortable to go up to them and say “hi”, “I like your cosplay” or even “how are you?” If you know them.Most of the cosplayers I see, we usually know each other because we see each other often. I really hope this helps!

    I'm actually pretty new in cosplay, and recently I did a pubic cosplay just for the heck of it! I didn't have anyone with me since I like doing things alone XD for me the method that I use is picturing yourself like you were just in an anime convention, people are always gonna stare at you there as well, and when you think about public cosplaying is just the same thing people are gonna stare at you as well so, what I did what I like to do which is cosplaying, answer questions, and just moved on :) I know not everyone is as okay with being seeing with a kimono, or jumpsuit, but if you really love to do something why be shy, or shame of it? You like it so, what does that have with other people.

    So I’m making a Donatello cosplay from Tmnt but in human because I’m younger. And he has a battleshell that I made out of cardboard and it’s maybe a little bit bigger than a backpack, would that count as like a more out of the norm cosplay? Love the video and good tips me and my sister are planning to go to the mall in cosplay since it’s summer and we just want to have some fun (she is going to be fyodor from bsd and me ranpo) I been nervous since in my town it’s odd for cosplayer to be around but really excited to go

    Surpurisly when I cosplay I never get any weird looks or comments. The people in my area are pretty chill with me cosplaying in public and don't say much to me besides smile or say something extremely nice to me. NGL I was very nervous at cosplaying in public for the first time but as soon as I figured out how everyone treated me I was more confident and ok with cosplaying.

      I'd say go ahead! I did this at a con this summer when I cosplayed Majima From Yakuza and made a bunch of tiny Bun-chan plushies to hand out to people. So far everyone loved it, just expect some people can be a bit less trusting with strangers

    alrighty. i just sketched out a design of a character im planning to cosplay with my friends, but she's an archer with a big cartoony-looking bow and arrow. the arrow is very rounded on the end. do you think it would be okay to wear to the mall?

    • @impostorsystem
      @impostorsystem 2 года назад +1

      maybe make sure to keep the bow on your back, or hold the arrow/s in a quiver? i don't think many people would be intimidated by a bow as they would be by a more common handheld weapon like a knife or gun, but it would be a good idea to make sure people don't think you're actively wielding a weapon

    • @kuripunpuri
      @kuripunpuri Год назад

      @@impostorsystem I agree with you, whenever I cosplay in public I’ve always had my props attached to my back or my waist to avoid, well hitting people because props like weapons can sometimes be big but if the prop is smaller it can be handheld, but it’s better to make sure and have an way to attach the prop :D.

    I do alot of my cosplay building and events where I’m wearing cosplay in a place a few mins from my house but to get there I have walk down a very busy street, it’s really fun walking down the street in full cosplay and seeing how people react. I once stopped into a shoppers drug mart to buy a monster before volunteering with a bunch of kids in a venti cosplay and the workers literally had zero reaction it was so funny.

    I was thrown headfirst into getting comfortable cosplaying in public when we were going to Katsucon but had to park at the nearby MGM (casino) and for some reason we WALKED THROUGH THE MAIN LOBBY and I was in full Emet-Selch cosplay (big robe, tall boots, brown wig with a big silver stripe in the front. At the time it was mortifying but now I look back on it and laugh LOL. But these are great points and I have to remind myself it's not that big of a deal!

    I have a friend that cosplays like once a year. And I'm trying to get them out of their shell. I personally cosplay in public all the time. And it's always so fun even if I'm the only one in costume.

  • @Salt_euhhh
    @Salt_euhhh Год назад +1

    Hi ! Well in my case I feel I could add that I paradoxically enjoy more wearing big extravagant costumes in public than simpler ones. When it's a big costume with armor, a big dress with a big wig, horns, crown, wings...people around immediately understand that it's art, so they look more out of genuine curiosity or appreciation rather than judging, and understand why you're photoshooting. But it's different when you wear a small uniform, or cosplay clothing that look like regular clothes, because it's less obvious that it's a costume and they can think you're a random weirdo that dresses like that everyday. The looks they give will be different. So yeah for me smaller costumes in public are more of a challenge !

    I would also add that you can't assume people looking at you are sober.
    I sadly was on my way to an event on a train, I wasn't alone thank god!
    But there were two grown men really freaking out and being complete jerks one wanted to touch everything and the other was literally climbing over people and walls of the train trying to escape because we were monsters and screaming we would kill him.
    When we got to the next stop there were more cosplayers and the one losing mind ended up on the floor fetal position crying on the ground as his "friend" walked off shouting I am never doing acid with you again, Buzzkill!. We got staff to help him and we went on our way.
    You have no way of knowing what is going on with the people around you so just be careful.
    When ever posable don't be along!

      Funtime Chica, Glamrock Chica, and Roxy are the only ones I can think of who might be a little too risqué for the public. Otherwise, since FNAF is a horror series you might not want to dress too "scary", especially if there could be kids around. Like she said, it's best not to carry weapons, or to use any fake blood or anything.
      Other than that, though, you should be fine! Most of the characters are pretty cute if you don't know the story 😂 Who are you cosplaying?

    Cosplayers are best to be avoided, especially those who flaunt. There exists a great divide at comic cons in regards to costumes related to comic book characters and that of exhibitionist simply there to flaunt skin. Advice to the later: don't push it on everyone assuming that they share in your fantasy world or habits.
