It might be just me, but do the episodes that focuses on the Splits feel darker than the rest? I mean, other villains like the Cattanooga Cats and the pirate crew that I can't remember the name of are portrayed in a tone similer to the show, but the Splits seem to carry this sinister air whenever they appear, and this is not taking the film into account What doesn't help is how scared the citizens are of them; now that I think about it, El Kabong might be the only one brave enough to stop them But again, it might be just me
Perhaps the scriptwriters have been influenced by the movie and are dialing up the darkness a bit? When the Banana Splits first appeared, they were supposed to be pop stars for young children, much like Barney and the Teletubbies. Nowadays they have to have more of an edge to appeal to young children, who are always more jaded than their predecessors. Side note: it would have been funny if a female owl in a white fur coat had attacked them at the end of this episode.
