      Yes, they get a lot from the playgroups. They spend most of their time stuck in their kennels with nothing to do. Going to playgroup gives them exercise, but it also gives them a lot to think about after they go back, so it's not as boring.

      I kinda remember that dog. Dogs who act overly aggressively to the other dogs usually get corrected by the dogs. And the playgroup dogs are good at fixing a lot of behavior issues. I've seen a lot of dogs improve over time after several playgroup sessions.

      It's the Sesame Street strategy. They work at appealing to the adults as well as the kids so the parents will watch with their kids, which gets the kids even more engaged with the show. That's why they have all sorts of famous people on the show and make jokes only the adults will understand. I try to appeal to both the dogs and the humans. I hope this will make it more meaningful for the dogs, but it will also prevent advertisers from thinking that only dogs are watching.

    It's interesting how much you can learn about dog body language through this video. There were definitely a couple pups who probably would do better in a smaller group, ones that need dogs of other energy levels and play styles, and ones that probably would just prefer to be let out with just the human and themselves.

    • @DogPlaygroupStories
      @DogPlaygroupStories  Год назад

      We try to bring out dogs in groups based on their play style: gentle/dainty, push/pull (herding dogs, dogs that like running), rough and rowdy. Some dogs can do multiple play styles and sometimes they stay in for multiple groups. Unfortunately we've been getting away from strict play style based groups somewhat. I don't know the reason why.

    • @DogPlaygroupStories
      @DogPlaygroupStories  Месяц назад

      Some of them have battle scars, both visible and invisible, but the staff and volunteers love each and every one. People *are* adopting them (eventually) but so many come into the shelter every day: strays, abuse cases, hoarding cases. A single hoarding case could bring in 50 dogs that are all under-socialized with people.

      I'm trying to overcome my prejudice against pitbulls. Most of the dogs in that video are pitbulls or pit mixes, yet they all play well together. Is that common or not?

    • @DogPlaygroupStories
      @DogPlaygroupStories  Месяц назад

      @@JohnKline-cg5vp I spent two years walking hundreds of dogs at the shelter. At least half of them were pit bulls. My experience is that pit bulls are notoriously affectionate "wiggle butts". I'm actually more afraid of german shepherds than pit bulls. The border collies/cattle dogs/aussies can get very anxious being stuck in a shelter kennel for 23 hours a day.

      Great to hear you dog enjoys this video!
      A lot of dogs at this shelter have suffered from Valley Fever, which can leave a dog with a limp or other impaired movement. It's really sad. I'm not sure if that's the case with the dog in the video. The notes weren't clear to me, but the vet has checked the dog for issues, including X-rays.
      I think the German Shepard you're referring to is Homer. All dogs need to respect the corrections ("Back off!" signals) of all other dogs. If they don't, it's a big problem. Homer in this video is sometimes not respecting those signals and what's best is for the other dogs to correct him even more, rather than having the human handlers correct him.

    • @DogPlaygroupStories

      I'm glad your dogs enjoy these videos! And yes, these dogs sometimes get adopted based on people seeing them in the videos. I create videos for individual dogs and put them on the dog's adoption page and the videos play in the shelter lobby. Rambo and Bryan recently found homes this way.
      The handlers and I totally agree about needing water in the play yard. But the shelter head veterinarian won't allow it (yet) due to the possible spread of disease. When the weather gets hot we will need water out there.
      We don't allow toys or treats in the yard because some dogs will resource guard (fight over) them.
      Dogs Playing for Life has been working with hundreds of animal shelters to set up playgroups like this, so it's been catching on over the last 10 years or so.

    I recently rescued a very reactive dog, and have been doing my best to desensitize her, we've done great on vacuum, hair dryer, and squirrel reactivity but I've been having a hard time finding a consistent and controlled environment to work on her dog reactivty since our interactions with them are unpredictable (neighbors open the door and suddenly a dog is there, we walk past people on a busy street and she thinks their dog is walking right at her and I don't have room to move aside, someone else's dog starts reacting to her, etc).
    I take her to open parks, and it helps some with giving us space but I can't control if there are other dogs there or how long they'll stay. Most of my friends in the area have cats and can't help.

    All the dogs are short hair, similar breeds? And why did you say you keep leashes on? What state are you in? How does my viewing your site help with your animal care center? Love this as it as least gives my little dog some exercise as she is barking at the screen Thank you

    • @DogPlaygroupStories
      @DogPlaygroupStories  Год назад +3

      Wow, lots of great questions!
      The playgroup dogs are all larger breeds. We did try some playgroups for small breeds but they get adopted quickly so I think that's why we focus on large breeds.
      Some dogs don't have an interest in the videos. I think you're right that some dogs know it's just a video.
      This shelter is in Tucson, Arizona (USA for international people who might not know. It's this place: 🌵🌵🌵)
      We actually remove the leashes that are used to transport the dogs and then have them wear a clip lead leash on a Martingale collar. If a fight breaks out, it's necessary to separate the dogs fighting as well as any dogs that are "conflict driven", possibly jumping into the fight and causing more damage. The latest video had a mild altercation between dogs. I was thinking about leaving it in the video to show why we keep the leashes on, but it was a bit too much. Dogs at home could get overstimulated and start ripping up the furniture. We also use the leashes to catch the dogs to remove them from the playgroup. Some dogs really don't want to go and we use an extra long leash for them.
      Your views provide funding for the dogs through the advertisements that RUclips displays. If you have RUclips Premium, then the channel collects a small part of the fee that you pay directly to RUclips. The amount of money the shelter receives from these videos is thousands of dollars per month. People at the shelter are very happy I'm doing this.
      I hope your dog isn't barking at the screen the whole time the video is playing. I think 10% of the time would be ideal. 100% of the time might be overstimulation.

    • @DogPlaygroupStories
      @DogPlaygroupStories  Год назад +2

      @AM-qw7xu That's actually a long-time volunteer, not a staff member. She puts in probably something like 10 hours a week walking each dog, reporting any problems the dogs have, doing that year after year. Since the shelter is way over capacity, the staff select a lucky dog to leave in the volunteer office with a temporary toddler fence to keep the dog from running out of the office when you open the door. It's great for the dog since it's quiet and they get to interact with lots of people. Since the dog needs to co-exist with volunteers using the office, the selected dog shouldn't be one that misbehaves (such as consistently jumping over the toddler fence, snapping at volunteers, chewing up things, consistently peeing on the floor despite being walked more often than the other dogs, etc).
      So the volunteer's complaint is more directed at whoever selected this dog to be in the volunteer office rather than a regular kennel. That volunteer routinely handles very badly behaved dogs and I've never seen her mistreat a dog.

      This video was recorded during a deadly strep zoo outbreak at the shelter. Dogs would die within hours of detecting the disease. The staff and volunteers did a lot of heroic efforts to minimize the spread of the disease. With the playgroups, there was a huge problem: dogs needed to socialize in order to minimize their stress level (and the disease affects stressed out dogs, especially in an animal shelter). The lead shelter veterinarian made the decision to remove the water from the playgroup to limit the possible spread of the disease while still allowing the dogs to attend the playgroups, and the playgroups were early in the morning before the temperature was too high and the dogs had limited time in the yard and were monitored for signs of dehydration. The strep zoo outbreak was very well contained, thanks to all the various efforts we undertook. I continued to record videos and donate revenue to the shelter to help pay for things like expensive, urgent medicines and disposable protective gear we all had to wear.

    I’m curious why they allow the dogs to run around with the leases still on them and the dog pen

    • @DogPlaygroupStories
      @DogPlaygroupStories  4 месяца назад

      Here's a response I've made a few times in the past:
      Based on experience with many thousands of shelter dogs (across hundreds of animal shelters), these leashes are very important for the dogs' safety. I've actually been in the yard when the leashes saved a dog's life. Many of these dogs come in as strays and we don't know their history. We get abuse cases, hoarding cases, neglected dogs, and dogs with hidden psychological issues. [leashes allow us to safely separate dogs quickly during and after a fight]
      On the other hand, I've never seen or heard of an injury due to the leashes. However, in cases where a 3-legged dog comes into the play yard, if that dog is known to not be conflict driven and is known to be easy to catch (for whatever reason they need to be caught), then I ask if we can take the leash off because it's difficult for a 3-legged dog to walk and run with the drag line.

  • @bwvideo0905
    @bwvideo0905 9 месяцев назад

    Why ate their leashes still on at the beginning of this? They have a 2 gate system. Dragging the leashes through pee and poop and Possible for a dod to trip or get tangled up and hurt themselves. With 2 gate system they don't need to do that. Am I missing something?

    • @DogPlaygroupStories
      @DogPlaygroupStories  9 месяцев назад

      These are animal shelter dogs: strays, abuse cases, neglect cases, hoarding cases. Many of them have behavior issues that don't show up right away, often only after they're in the playgroup. Some dogs are conflict driven and will jump into a fight among dogs. It's possible to have several dogs attacking one dog with very little warning. In those cases many dog handlers will rush to the yard and help separate the dogs using the leashes. If you put your hands near a dog's mouth while they're extremely frightened and agitated, you risk getting seriously bitten. Not only does this hurt a lot, but it makes the dog much less adoptable when it gets a bite record.
      This shelter has worked with many thousands of dogs in these playgroups and there haven't been any issues of dogs being harmed by the leashes. On the other hand, there's a saying in heavy industrial workplaces that the safety rules are written in blood. The group that pioneered shelter dog playgroups, Dogs Playing for Life, discovered the importance of drag lines (leashes) with shelter dogs in playgroups, along with many other procedures. They've rolled out playgroups to over 400 different shelters and rescues with fantastic results.
      Based on my own experience recording these playgroups for the past 2.5 years, I would NOT want to take the leashes off the dogs, except for dogs that meet very specific behavior criteria. Given that we have around 500 dogs in the shelter and dogs are adopted every day and brought to the shelter every day, we don't know which dogs clearly meet those criteria. I do advocate for taking the leashes off any 3-legged dogs.
      Note that I'm a volunteer and not a staff member. I don't speak for the shelter itself.

      From the notes:
      Strudel was bored at home, so hopped the fence and stayed with a neighbor for about three weeks before heading to the shelter. The neighbor said that Strudel is extremely lovable, loves car rides, and is great with people (including kids as young as 10). He’s a big lapdog who is not a fan of cats. In his future home, Strudel will need a place indoors by his family’s side and a secure yard to keep him safe and sound at home. Strudel shares his kennel with another PACC pup and was social and tolerant when meeting other dogs in playgroup.

    • @DogPlaygroupStories
      @DogPlaygroupStories  Год назад

      The leashes aren't there to identify them (although I created my own leashes to do that). The purpose of them is to separate dogs during a dog fight when multiple conflict driven dogs can attack another dog. An air horn and a radio can be used to summon a whole lot of people who run into the yard and each grab a leash. Note that you never pull dogs apart if one is latched onto another, it'll just do more damage. It's also important not to get your hand/arm close to a dog's mouth, which would happen if you tried to grab a dog's collar. They can re-direct a bite onto you without thinking. These situations are rare, but they do happen and the leashes save dogs' lives.

    • @DogPlaygroupStories
      @DogPlaygroupStories  Год назад

      We spent months dealing with this issue. The shelter was having outbreaks of Strep Zoo which would quickly kill dogs when their lungs fill with blood (We also had other disease outbreaks). The problem is that the disease is opportunistic so the more you stress out the dogs, the more you get outbreaks, so it's important for dogs to be able to play in the yard together. If you let the dogs share water, it creates a pathway to spread disease among lots of dogs. The shelter tried a number of different solutions, such as having cohorts of dogs in the play yard and sterilizing the water pools in between, but in the end we ended up with relying on the water in the kennels and trying not to leave the dogs in the yard for long. We never had dogs suffer from any kind of serious dehydration but we did avoid having many serious outbreaks of disease. Within the shelter there are so many counterbalancing factors in every decision. I seriously didn't like the decision not to have water in the yard, but hindsight has pretty much proven me wrong.

      If it's not clear how a dog will behave in the group, they typically wear a muzzle. If they do well, then the handler will remove the muzzle, sometimes after multiple sessions. I don't like it when dogs have to wear a muzzle, but it's usually better than completely avoiding the play group. Often the muzzle allows them to enter a whole new world of dog social interactions.
      While some things in the videos are sad, it's not as sad as what most of the dogs deal with in the kennels 24/7. At best it's very boring. At times it's terrifying with all the emotional barking.
      UPDATE: During one session we had a dog that required a muzzle. It was very well behaved so the handler took off the muzzle, which is normal. There was an altercation and the dog bit one of the handlers' leg. So now the dog has a legal bite record (making it harder for her to get adopted) and is spending a mandatory 10 days in a rabies isolation kennel. In that case, the muzzle was sad but taking it off was sadder.

      I think you mean Jack with a bad leg. The handlers view dogs in terms of whether they respect corrections or not. If a dog doesn't respect corrections from other dogs, then it either gets a muzzle or is taken out from the other dogs. Sometimes dogs will pester another dog for a while. Ideally that other dog should correct the dog (assuming it doesn't consent to the behavior) and that's something it should learn to do. But eventually the offending dog will be removed.

      This isn't a dog daycare, it's an animal shelter. The dogs get human interactions from volunteers who walk the dogs separately from the playgroups. These dogs come from all kinds of backgrounds: strays, abuse cases, neglect, hoarding cases, etc. We've had dogs come in with gunshot wounds. Some dogs have very poor social skills. We don't allow toys in the yard to avoid resource guarding which can lead to dangerous fights. We usually don't interact with the dogs because they can resource guard people and cause a fight. Everything we do is based on experience with thousands of these shelter dogs over many years. The procedures were developed by Dogs Playing for Life who works with 400+ shelters to create a safe way for shelter dogs to socialize, which helps them get adopted and out of the shelter. There's no grass because it's Tucson and very dry desert. Sand actually works well for the dogs. If this video was at the beach, it would seem wonderful.

Volunteers walk the dogs every day regardless of weather or holidays (we try to get every dog out every day, but with the extreme overcrowding the volunteers can't do it so we make sure to get every dog out every other day). We have these playgroups every day to help get dogs out of their kennels. This is Tucson, Arizona and any grass in the yard wouldn't last long.
      The leashes are for the dogs' safety based on experience with many thousands of these shelter dogs. Many of these dogs come from very bad backgrounds (think of the difference between a kindergarten and a prison yard). I've personally seen the leashes save a dog's life.

    If the dog had a bad leg why is he in there. Wtf

      The shelter vet must have cleared it and the behavior team tried him out and he enjoyed it and did fine.
      He's now a playgroup regular. It's better than sitting in a stressful noisy kennel. We had a dog Osso with a hind leg that wouldn't bend and he really enjoyed playgroup.

      ...also, some dogs in the shelter suffer from the lingering effects of valley fever, which is common here in the Sonoran Desert. So you'll see more than the usual number of dogs with limping in shelter dogs.

      UPDATE: That dog was just adopted. It's very possible that wouldn't have happened if he didn't spend a lot of time with the other dogs in playgroups.

      @ds3356 These are animal shelter dogs and we have over 400 of them right now. They've been discarded by society and taken in by the county. They live in kennels until they're fostered or adopted (they're lucky that Pima County in Arizona USA has a very high live release rate and euthanasia is rare, considering the extreme overcrowding we've been having). If they didn't live in individual kennels many of them would be killed by the other dogs. Volunteers walk these dogs and give them individualized attention, ideally twice a day, but with the overcrowding we've been having it's now at least once every other day, but often every day for the dogs who really need it.
      We have these playgroups in this play yard for dogs to socialize and play every day. It looks like this because it's actually not that different from a prison yard. Dogs often try to escape and the few that do are often hit by cars and die before we find and catch them. These playgroups are also used to evaluate how new dogs behave with other dogs. Dogs come in as strays, abuse/neglect/hoarding cases, owner surrenders, dogs with gunshot wounds. The staff, volunteers, and clinic help them with whatever they need and try to adopt them out or at least get them fostered. A lot of their effort is truly heroic and they treat the dogs extremely well and advocate for them.
      I record these playgroups and put the videos on RUclips which provides thousands of dollars of funding for the shelter every month, as well as providing enrichment for lucky dogs in comfy homes where they can watch these videos. I also use the playgroup footage to create short videos for individual dogs to help them get adopted/fostered.
      I'm actually much more sickened by how humans treat dogs outside of the animal shelter than the amazing work the staff and volunteers do within the shelter.

    This makes for very uneasy viewing. Dogs are being put in and forced together clearly a lot not sociable some very timid some very dominant should a fight break out it would be absolute carnage pack instinct and humans would struggle to stop it absolutely insane makes me so uneasy lots of powerful bully breeds in there as well

      These playgroups have been going on daily at this animal shelter and hundreds of other animal shelters for years. It was pioneered by Dogs Playing for Life many years ago and it has been hugely successful with amazingly good results for the dogs. Every dog in the playgroup has been carefully evaluated in a controlled playgroup using helper dogs. Yes, some dogs are afraid (I would be if I was a dog), but most of them eventually enjoy or at least tolerate being in playgroups after a few days of trying it out. If they don't, then they don't come back after a few attempts. Any dogs with genuinely bad behavior such as not respecting--or worse, protesting-- the corrections of other dogs are removed from the yard. The handlers in the playgroup are trained and have done very well over the course of about a thousand playgroups at this shelter.

    Your area is entirely TOO SMALL for all those animals. The Sally port and the *yard* area. Just like prison. The dogs aren't socializing, they're surviving a stressful fkn situation. Behaviors will change due to this. Don't get me started on the dog with a muzzle. How do you live with yourselves or sleep at night. OMG. There still a LONG way to go before the human species redeems itself regarding the Animal Kingdom and the endless fkry being done to them all.

      These playgroups save shelter dogs' lives and greatly improve their lives. That's based on experience with many thousands of dogs in this shelter plus thousands of dogs in hundreds of other shelters. The techniques were pioneered by Dogs Playing for Life many years ago and the results have been absolutely fantastic for dogs. Last I heard they've worked with over 400 shelters, including ours (twice). The size of the play yard, the use of muzzles, and lots of other things are based on extensive actual experience rather than one person's opinion, who may not have spent all these years working with so many shelter dogs. The staff and volunteers at our shelter go to truly heroic lengths to do what's best for these 500 dogs that society has discarded and left for us to rehabilitate and get them fostered/adopted back into the community. I've spent well over 1,000 hours of my time volunteering to do the hard work in working with these dogs, not counting all the hours I've spent creating these videos (which provide many thousands of dollars for the shelter). I sleep just fine at night.

      Every now and then someone will swoop in here full of righteous indignation about something and rant about it, clearly not from the perspective of someone who has done a lot of work in animal shelters. "Why is that dog wearing a muzzle?!" A good answer would be: [Fool] around and find out, after which they limp away with a level 3 redirect bite and the dog gets sent to rabies isolation for 10 days and becomes even less adoptable (possibly even euthanized for legal reasons). Or perhaps take the leashes off and let them play in a big beautiful grassy meadow where you'll never catch the dog that's attacking the other dogs and ripping big gashes in their ears, or the conflict driven dogs that jump in during the attacks and add to the damage.

    I don't understand how there's dogs that are clearly getting along well, but have their Ball's. I thought balls made the male dogs aggressive? In my country neutering is very uncommon except for strays. But I would like to have a well behaved dog like in this video, but without mutilating what God gave them! Beautiful creatures, and great job with the shelter,

    • @DogPlaygroupStories
      @DogPlaygroupStories  Год назад

      That's a very good point. I don't know a lot about it. A fair number of admitted dogs are unaltered and I haven't seen a big difference in behavior. But I know that if there were multiple intact males and an intact female in heat in the play yard, things would get serious. Also, neutered males can actually behave aggressively towards intact males. The handlers who run the playgroups go through this before making the playgroup list for the day which includes the order of bringing dogs in. They spend about an hour working on it before the playgroup.

    DO SOMETHING ABOUT LITTLE BUDDY"S LEG ! I DONT WANT TO SEE A DOG IN PAIN LIKE THAT!

    • @DogPlaygroupStories
      @DogPlaygroupStories  Год назад +1

      The clinic veterinarians examine the dogs and do whatever they can for both pain and healing. The volunteers walk the dogs each day and are very good for identifying issues, bringing them up with the clinic, and following up on how they're doing. The contract workers who clean the kennels and feed the dogs also identify issues to the clinic. Despite having over 400 dogs, I doubt if there are any cases where a dog goes for any length of time without having major issues addressed (even minor issues). A lot of the dogs here get valley fever and never fully recover. When you see a dog limping in the video, that's usually the cause and the clinic does whatever possible to help them and minimize their pain.
