Holy crap... This clip from 1989. It was uploaded 17 years later on RUclips, in 2006. Here I am watching this clip another 17 years later, in 2023. This means this clip is about to be on RUclips longer than it wasn't. I'm getting old.
Loved the intros. Brings back so many memmories. Thise who remember VMB wouldd air 3:30pm and couldn't get to a tv? No fear, it would repeat at 11pm Monday thru Thursday, Friday @ 11:30pm - Midnight. Saturday @ 11am.
OMG!!! Talk about going down memory lane as a NYC teenager in High School in the 1980's.. Those were the best of times and the best music and era ever!
Video Music Box was the greatest thing to happen for NYC hip hop!!! Even if you wasn't from NYC, if your video was viewed on the show you was good. And all these youngins who don't know who Uncle Ralph is, they are not real hip hop!!
That was the shit. I use to love that opening back in the day, never grew tired of it. Great to see the show showcase the artists that were popular during that to and to also pay homage to the legends (Kendricks, Ruffin, Hendrix, and Marley).
I remember these days damn I miss my younger day I remember when I used to come home afterschool do all my home and at 4 turn to channel 31 and watch video music box I never missed a episode
Word mami! That was the realness when I used to run home from school to catch it on Ch. 31 back in Queens! Man, I just turned 30 yrs old and it STILL feels like only yesterday when I watch this intro. GOOSEBUMPS!...Haha. Much respect to Crazy Sam and Uncle Ralph McDaniels.
Tell me about it. To me it's was better than most of the other video channel anyway. A TRUE classic for anyone who REALLY grew up around the origins of hip hop. Now, if you can remember the PREVIOUS opening for VMB then you are a TRUE Hip hop VET.
Same here I watch it as much as I could. When you consider it was on a channel that was so far off the beaten path. It had to be good for so many people to have found there way to it. Thanks Ralph
did u know that this show still airs in NYC?! I have met Ralph McDaniels...he is still giving new & up & coming hip hop & r&b artist a shot. My video "Hustle" was just played on his show last week.
i'm so glad we agree! :) I remembered when i was 17 I would babysit a family friend's two boys and VMB would come on; enjoyed those times soo much! I remembered the announcement from one of the Chinese documentary shows (Sinovision I believe), that the station was to be sold; I hoped it was a joke! now to find the japanese/chinese or korean soap operas would be a difficult feat! I live to watch them!
I remember setting the VCR's timer recording to tape various UEFA Cup, Cup Winners Cup, and European Cup matches that would take place on the Rai International programming they had on channel 31 around 2:30PM. It would always feature an Italian team since Rai was paying for it. Between those games & VMB and some other programs, it was a cool channel. They would show Serie A calcio matches on Sunday mornings too.
omg i remember coming home from daycare and watching this with my oldest brother on our old ass floor model tv lol. he taped every episode. damn this brought me be back...I LOVE UNCLE RALPH!!!
I definitely witnessed V.M.B. from the fall of 1992 through the spring of 1996. This show had a lot to offer such as spotlighting underground artists and showing a lot of old and new school videos. It even shown some videos from the house music genre, i think.
omg i remember coming home from day care and watching this wit my oldest brother on our old ass floor model tv lol. he used to tape every episode...damn this brought me back.
Hell yeah, I remember this. his was back when Video Music Box was the Hip-Hop show to watch in NYC. And it was even cooler back then because it wasn't just limited to Hip-Hop. They played stuff from way back like Jimi and JB, and even some New Wave stuff that crossed over like A-Ha and Talking Heads, and the pop stuff like Prince and Madonna. They were hip to showing good music.
i remember the old Channel 31 (if you live in NYC) showing VMB back in the day. felt like yesterday. a lotta old school/underground rap made it big off this show. if you made VMB, you're going places for sure...
Wow, memories! Oh man, this takes back me to afternoons on the couch after school. I was always confused as a kid, though, why they had all these pop videos in the intro, but never showed pop videos!
oh my god this takes me back to when i lost my two front teeth. i used to love seeing the drawings from the take on me video, and hearing don't disturb this groove.
Man I used to LOOVe this show when I was little! U also helped me find a video I was looking for for years....the one with the guy kissed the girl and they are rolling..what is tha name of that song???? I used 2 like it wen I was little. Man LOVED this show...grew up on it too.
wow i didnt know that was david ruffin and eddie kendricks...learn a new thing everyday...damn i miss this show. brings back so many memories. weekdays at 4 on public access manhattan
Haha, I didn't undersand a word of the chinese dramas, shows, but I watched them anyway; the Japanese soap operas/shows I loved on Saturday morning/afternoons because they had subtitles! Best of all I loved Video Music Box! :)
"Five Minutes of Funk" is the name of the song. That has been mentioned before here; all you needed to do was scroll down the messages to find the answer.
It's funny how the song five minutes of funk always reminds me of video music box every time I hear it. Does anyone remember another show called Video trax which used to come on channel 25 every Friday.
Hell yeah, this opening was the shit. I used to watch VMB every day after coming home from highschool. I still remember Old Skool Mondays. I know this show is on cable now (don't have it). Does it still have the same opening?
Damn, I used to watch this show everyday after school. I remember getting upset when Video Music Box wasn't on and they had some Italian soccer game on instead. Man, those were the days. Anybody remember Tuffy?

Our past is so much endlessly cooler than this early Century. Dropping mainstream corporate hip hop immediately is vital for recovering said coolness
