MAN, ZETH!!! BRAVO FOR THIS LINE: “He needs to learn how to handle his emotions” in reference to Atlas not having an ipad at a restaurant table. EXACTLY the right move. Anesthetizing kids with tech at a young age is a massive problem which will bleed into their habits at older ages and contribute to their inabilities to cope with life.. My little sister and I have a 17 year age gap, so I helped raise her & protected from a lot of things. She turns 13 in September and still plays with dolls, makes bracelets, and does not use social media. She volunteers at our city hall with veterans and the senior center; she's been in musicals and cheer. I'm very proud that she is still very sweet and wholesome. You are both doing such a great job and I feel confident that your influence on parents is extremely positive. Thank you!

What a wonderful little girl! Mom and dad you’re doing awesome. I love how talkative dad is! I feel like it’s really rare to find a man that enjoys talking so much haha. Thank you for being parents of a six year old and filtering/deciding what she should watch before she does. Love this. It’s not easy unless you commit and so hearing you just talk to Saylor about why you do it is wonderful. She will understand why you make your decisions about her life.

    • @thedarknessofnana
      @thedarknessofnana 5 месяцев назад +4

I do this with my 6yo too, and we always talk about what she watches so I can give more in depth explanations. I have an inquisitive daughter, so she always has follow up questions. 😂 Luckily, I too was an inquisitive daughter once, so I’ve collected a lot of explanations for things, so it works out.
I also love how they explain things in a way that Saylor can understand, but they’re not dumbing anything down. I do the same. Kids are smarter than you think, and as long as you give them an age-appropriate response and keep it matter-of-fact, kids will get it.
Parents sometimes overthink the response and end up saying “We’ll, er, talk about it later when you’re older.” That just builds curiosity and then they go seek the answers elsewhere. I just give an objective explanation. For example, when she was 3, she asked where do babies come from? I told my daughter the daddy gives the mommy some love, and the love makes the baby grow in the mommy’s tummy. Then, the baby comes out through the exit hole. 😊 Now, obviously there’s more to it than that, but that was enough of an explanation for her 3-year-old mind at the time.

I have been watching for a while, and I just wanted to share that I admire both of you and your parenting style so much. It is very reminiscent of, like you mentioned, the 90s way of growing up. And having grown up as a homeschooled kid in the 90s, I love it.
I definitely remember all the funny reactions that people had when I told them and the “Shouldn’t you be in school?” comments lol. I was super shy, but I still had friends through Sunday School and homeschool groups/co-op classes.
Whenever I see a kid glued to an iPad in public, it makes me really sad. My mom always had other things to distract us, like coloring books/drawing pads, books, etc, and we were content with that.
I’m also all for the talk about the craziness of the last few years. Open that can of worms haha!
I don’t have kids yet, but you both are huge inspirations for how I’d want to raise children. Keep it up and God Bless!

I'm a behavior analyst and an so happy to hear you let Atlas throw his fit without any reinforcement! Also, if you're not already doing it, give Atlas a 10-second countdown on turning off his video. Pause it, tell him he has 10 more seconds, then turn it back on and count down out loud. The abrupt change of no warning can be tough, and though we may be discussing what we're doing next, the little ones aren't picking up on those cues if it's not specifically addressed to them.

I am so honored to witness your approach to parenting.
Yes, I may have an old lady’s (82) perspective, the other day , I witnessed a young mother taking a walk with her two small children. She was on her phone!
Wasn’t this an opportunity to interact with her children about what they were seeing on their walk.
I just thought it was sad
So keep up the good work.

As someone who's learned child development and is very invested in mental health, you guys are very very correct. These kids aren't learning to regulate when it's constant screen time...they need to learn to be in the moment with people. If they get upset, it's okay it's the process of teaching the kid to work through situations.
iPad kids are - will become a phenomenon when they get older. Those parents are setting up their kids for failure... What you and your wife are doing with your kids is ideal and what people should be doing like their parents did and so on. Technology should be last in their choice and even then it should just be a passing thought.
I would love to talk more about this 😆 it's one of my favorite subjects. Child development and technology

Please consider another perspective that masks/mask wearing existed even before 2020. I had a loved one whose health was in poor condition so he had to wear a mask 24/7. I had a family member undergoing cancer treatments and if everyone wanted to be around them we all had to wear masks cause their immune system was very low. This meant wearing a mask in public if I wanted to protect their health. I wouldn’t say brainwashed, more like people have their own personal autonomy and just like people choose to not wear one, some may choose to do so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Love that yall aren’t afraid to speak your mind and share your values. It’s so needed in these current times and you’d be surprised at how many of us parents feel the same exact way!

i'm totally with you on how you parent your children, im 30 & not had children of my own yet but i plan on being the exact same way. I don't want the rubbish thats online poluting my child whatsoever! I remember playing with my barbies till i was like 14 years old and kids now are more invested in their skincare which boggles my mind!

41:12 this is an exact depiction of my life in Finland, Europe, where the temperatures get to -30°C in the winter. It’s so normal to me and I really feel ALIVE in the winter! I love putting on all my layers, winter gear including snow boots with spikes in the soles so I won’t slip on the ice😂 And then heading out and feeling so prepared and warm and just enjoying the crisp winter air❤️ Hearing her say that was a neat realization, I never thought that my life could be thought as ”extreme”. In the summer I feel depressed because there’s less ”surviving” and more free time lol

I love seeing people with like minds. No one around me has the same view on children that I do and it makes me flat out not want kids. You are so right about the constant dopamine thing and the only person I’ve ever heard say that besides myself. These kids are being raised to need constant stimulation for the rest of their lives.

We don’t have kids yet, but my boyfriend and I think about this all the time. And I really appreciate your approach to screening Saylor’s media consumption, and it’s refreshing to hear people actually acknowledge how scary it is

I agree with filtering the content kids watch. Content shapes kids minds by giving them a skewed view of what is important, how people are treated, and other social norms. Hannah Montana storylines revolving around boy crushes just promotes this idea to little kids that a girls' worth and goal in life is to be associated with a boy. Content "influences" our thinking on what to buy, how we should look, how we should treat people in a way that is so different and unattainable than what is presented in real life. If kids experience more people through social media than real interactions, their perception of people and society will be weighted by the presentation of those on social media.
10 year-olds in Sephora are a prime example of how dangerous screen time is for young brains.

What you’re describing of how you’re raising saylor is exactly the issue with parents and developing kids these days. All the people asking how to get a kid like saylor and noticing how she’s so wonderful in all her ways, this is it. I don’t have kids yet but I’ve felt lost with the way that everyone’s been parenting lately, this gives me hope and a better idea of the direction I want to go.

You two are amazing young parents. My 8 year old granddaughter has had an iPad her entire life and she is way too grown up now 😢. It’s very sad and I just want you to know that what you’re doing for your children is amazing and will positively affect their entire lives. Take it from this old lady that was raising her kids in the 90’s/early 2000’s and I see the craziness of raising kids nowadays.

my sis-in-law is raising a borderline psychopath who smashes her brothers head into coffee tables and will pridefully watch him cry hysterically. my SIL always responds to bad behavior with, “we will go home if you don’t stop”. when I see videos of children like this, it brings joy to see what can happen when you raise your child correctly. saylor makes me believe in having children again.

You two are doing a PHENOMENAL job!!! It’s important to protect your child’s innocence - this world is full of vile things & our kids are continuously targets. Homeschooling is the way as of late because these public school systems are pure poison.

I don't have children yet but I'm very impressed with your parenting values. The iPad for example is a big thing for me. There are so many children being raised by their iPads and I'm interested to see how they will fair as adults. I know that I don't want my children to have iPads. I never gave much thought to screening kids shows but thinking about it now, there's so many innuendos in shows that it's definitely something I'll do.
I'd be interested to know how you navigate going to the cinema or moments where someone else is babysitting. I guess you can't shelter them from everything but it's an interesting topic.
